I have been using the Garage for well over 15 years or more I think. Last time I went there they started this thing where you bring the car in with something wrong say engine light, and they charge you $200 just to look at it. Never mind fix anything...just to look at it. Then if you want it fixed well they charge the labor and parts on top of that. I felt much more than nickeled and dimed at the $200 fee. So today I went in with an engine light on, and they wanted now $240 just too look at it. So time to find a new garage. I am starting to feel just ripped off at the fee stucture. read more

Disappointed Longtime Customer - Overpriced and Untrustworthy Practices I've been a loyal customer for years, but I feel scammed. We replaced our xenon headlights 28 months ago (after 9 years of use), and now one has already burned out. When I returned to inquire, I was told the warranty on parts and labor is only 24 months. They also said it was working but just dimmer or a different color now but it was out when we drove there and went out again after we picked it up; obviously there's an issue. Out of curiosity, I researched the brand of bulbs they used and discovered they marked them up by ~550%! They chose a cheap option and charged us $491 to replace two bulbs that cost about $50 total. At that price, we assumed we were paying for high-quality, long-lasting bulbs--not so. This experience also made us rethink a prior estimate (years ago) for brake work they said was urgent. We held off back then, and now I'm glad we did because I no longer trust their recommendations. Save yourself the frustration and money. Look elsewhere for honest, transparent service. read more

They've been rip off me I rewrote this make it short. I have a 2009 honda civic with LCA lower ball joint bushing issue. I brought parts of LF lower control arm ball joint and outer tie rod to the "The garage" shop, which the parts honda advised me to replace it. They wanted to inspection.(of course charged fee). and told me my both control arms are bad and inner tie rod is not safe to drive. The invoice came out $1,674.87 with some discount. So I asked the both lower control arm include the lower ball joints? It will be whole unit. so yes. The tie rod for both inner and outer? or only inner? Whole unit, so all. It's still pricy for me ,but I accepted. But they replaced just lower control arms($843) and inner tie rod($700). Also the inner tie rod doesn't look brand new. They fixed only expensive labor jobs don't really need now. What I really need didn't touched it. And inspection fee.... I don't know what tech inspected. Inspected the only parts lots of labor cost? And saying safe to drive? *Someone picked this is Funny. Is that from shop member or family? I just fix that lower ball joint from different shop and paid $120. That what I needed. You guys charged me more than 10 times and promised to fix it. But didn't. read more

So this is hard because I really don't want to leave a review but the more I've thought about the experience and talked with a few other mechanics I have had beyond exceptional work from I feel compelled to leave my feedback on The Garage. I recently had a my 2008 Nissan Xterra in for brake service in June and again in August. They replaced the front brakes and a leaking brake line in the rear. They also replaced shocks, struts and leaf springs. Both times it took about week for these basic maintenance repairs and services to be completed for basic repairs on a modern vehicle. I found Kyle although pleasant to deal with would take a long time to call if he called and let you know what's happening and would set a bit overly optimistic expectations but ultimately things would take much longer than necessary and would have a lot of excuses as to why something that would take a day or two at most would end up taking several. For the approximately $4000 I spent on all the services I was left with rear brakes that failed which almost ended in me crashing my vehicle 2 months after the last work completed to the breaks. When I brought this to the attention to my current mechanic he couldn't believe no one noticed 2 months ago and said the brakes had been worn away and missing to the calipers and would of been noticeably in need of replacement to any competent mechanic especially if they had be working in that area and the breaks recently. I also replaced my suspension system due to age and making a lot of terrible squeaking noises. They replace the shocks, struts and leaf springs. The vehicle is completely out of level with the front end much higher and the rear end sags even with nothing in the vehicle, and still squeaks so loud you can hear it down the street. My current mechanic scratched his head at this one as well and didn't understand why they didn't offer to replace bushings and some other essential new parts that would of been easy enough while things we're apart. When I asked Kyle about this after I picked this up the first time he didn't have really much of an explanation and just kind of shrugged it off as needing a lift kit but they don't really do that. But this doesn't explain all the squeaking and other noises they could have addressed at the time and a solution offered. Overall I feel like they are the type of mechanics that offers good enough service but they aren't going out of their way to help you what so ever and I don't think it's even intentional but more just apathetic about the work and the customer. I would say if you have endless time on you hands, not educated about cars and want to over pay for services than these guys will be good enough for that. But to me the squeeze ain't worth the juice again. I'm glad I found a new mechanic that is responsive, offers a realistic timeline for any potential snags and gets the job done without a bunch of fluff to distract you from how excessively long the work is taking and fair prices, hell would pay the The Garage prices for just getting it done. I had a really great experience with The Garage. After having some trouble with a car I bought online and having that company refer me to The Garage for repair, they helped fixed the issue quickly. Like in hours, something the other company could not do after having my car for almost 3 weeks. The service was so good that they won me over and I will be a customer going forward. I don't know how to feel about the Garage. I took my car to My Mechanic on Folsom for last 10 years and was led to the Garage, thinking My Mechanic moved. Anyway, I only came for an oil change. When they called and said it was ready they told me the bill was over $200 because I was due for a 120k service. I was shocked they didn't give me a heads up before doing the work. I wasn't expecting this at all. They also told me I had some issues with my axle and LCA bushings (work would cost thousands). I saw other reviewers have said they told them about same issues. This made me think they tell everyone this. I got a full report with pictures but have no idea what I'm looking at. Anyway, I felt a couple of red flags and don't like work being done without calling me for approval. Never had that experience at any shop before. read more

The staff and mechanics at The Garage SF are spectacular. I have been to a few mechanics in the city, and have not had great experiences. The staff here were extremely helpful, and they did everything in their power to diagnose an oil leak in my car effectively and had it fixed within 7 hours! They were incredibly honest, at first glance they notified me that this might be a big and very costly problem, to prepare myself for that. In the end, they discovered it was a much simpler fix which saved me thousands of dollars. Was having trouble with my Jeep over heating. Being new to the City I did not know of a good trustworthy place to bring it. A couple of friends suggested The Garage. I am glad they did! Setting an appointment on line was easy. Kyle was great to work with as we're the rest of the team. They were able to fix my Jeep, did it in a timely fashion! Kyle stayed in touch the whole time! My partner used the garage for oil changes and checkups in the past for our 2008 Nissan Versa. When the check engine light came on, it was my turn to take the car in. I got the code read at O'reilly Auto Parts which, according to a Nissan Service Bulletin required reprogramming the ECM. I told them the code I was getting, however, they still wanted to do a $150 diagnostic. Turns out only the dealer can reprogram the ECM, so instead of doing nothing they suggested replacing the air filter and cleaning the throttle body for an extra $50. The justification for this was that this is what the service bulletin recommended. I didn't know any better so I agreed. I get the car back and the check engine light is no longer on, so I guess problem solved. However, they said it could still come on until I reprogram the ECM at the dealer. Problems: 1) When I get home, I look up the service bulletin myself it doesn't say anything about cleaning the throttle body or replacing the air filter. Perhaps there's some guide somewhere that recommends it, but I wasn't able to find it anywhere online. Regardless, they charged me $22 for an air filter I could've bought myself for $8 at autozone (https://www.autozone.com/external-engine/air-filter/stp-air-filter/25501_0_0) - I guess this is standard markup for auto shops... 2) When I took a look under the hood, they did not top off the coolant (included in the $150 diagnostic) even though I specifically asked them if they did. It's a minor point, but my reasoning is if they forgot something as simple as topping off the coolant - what else did they forget to do that I can't as readily check? Did they actually run the diagnostics/throttle body cleaning they charged me for? Or did they just perform an idle relearn (a simple 5 minute process you can DIY without any tools) to get the check engine light to shut off? Overall - the customer service was super friendly and understanding (they refilled the coolant after I specifically showed them the problem). However, I would cross check any work they do to make sure they actually did it - or spend some time looking up procedures online to do the simple stuff yourself. Additionally, they're really not in the business of saving you money on parts/labor - so any parts you can install yourself, I'd highly recommend doing it. read more

Never really post any reviews but after the experience with The Garage I felt compelled to share my experience. We already knew that the problem was with our automatic steering since our light came on the dashboard so we brought it in to get it checked out. They charged us $200 for a "diagnostic" and then told us that it would cost $2000 for parts/repairs and an additional $650 because they found that our brakes needed replacement. Typical of mechanics I guess. What was a surprise was when they received the part to repair the problem with the power steering, they needed to order another part because it STILL wasn't fixed. At this point they had the car for over a week. We agreed to pay an extra cost for overnight shipping for the new part, but it took over 2 days to get it in. So much for paying for expedited shipping. So the total cost of the repairs came out to close to $3000! And to top it off when we picked up the car they couldn't even take the time to clean the interior. Grease was all over the steering wheel and driver side area. I've never had such a bad experience with getting my car fixed and my car isn't even that old, there is only about 37k miles on it. Should have taken it next door to My Mechanic and will NOT be recommending The Garage to anyone I know. read more

These guys are on point, intelligent, respectful, efficient, patient, kind...what else can I put in here that's complimentary, because they deserve it. Oh right, the big one for a female with an old car: trustworthy. I use my literally irreplaceable and totally lovable manual Z4 for a monthly commute from LA. So I need this trusty place. My most recent visit is a pretty typical example of their awesomeness: I picked my car up last week after what ended up being a *free* check on high oil consumption and drove to LA. Though they'd done "nothing"--other than give pro advice as always--my fuel efficiency jumped by a good 15%. Seems they updated the software. So the more I drive, the more they've saved me. I have to send the whole team a big thank you. Everyone was beyond professional but more importantly, exceptionally communicative and refreshingly honest. My 2018 Volvo XC60 was up for regularly scheduled maintenance and after sourcing a handful of absurdly high quotes, I was lucky enough to come across The Garage. They understood my concerns of being surprised by an astronomical bill and talked me through every step of the way. They addressed the immediate necessary needs - oil change, tire rotation, etc. During their overall assessment, they uncovered an issue with my rear wiper and a full computer diagnostic was recommended. They reached out to get confirmation if I wanted to proceed and I approved. Upon an inconclusive testing result, they refused to charge me. We talked through what they would have to do to identify the problem in the future and they did not pressure me at all to pursue in the immediate. I've had two friendly experiences with The Garage but, being a first time car owner (in this country), I'm learning that you need to be very specific about what you ask for! The first experience was when I was looking to buy a car in September 2014, I found them via Yelp. They completed a pre-purchase inspection for me and were very thorough, friendly and honest. I ended up buying a different car of the same model (a 2005 Mercedes) and they emailed me proactively on the year anniversary of the pre-purchase inspection, as the service was due. As it turns out, I needed to service my car anyway, so I booked in to see them for a second time. Before I booked in, I asked (via email) if they were comfortable servicing German cars and Danny confirmed that they were. When I dropped it off, I mentioned that it needed a B service and they nodded, so I assumed they'd perform a regular B service. Their inspections turned up a handful of work due (brake pads/rotors, air filter and battery) - the first two of which I agreed to verbally over the phone. I also mentioned that the computer had mentioned topping up the car with a quart of oil, which they assured me they normally check and would top up if needed. The work was done quickly and well and I picked up the car later that day, a grand poorer but with the re-discovered ability to brake confidently! This weekend I was driving on the highway and the same oil warning came up. How odd, I thought. I checked the service receipt when home and then looked up the Mercedes B service checklist and noticed that they hadn't performed the oil change and brake fluid change Mercedes mandates. Called up the Garage this morning to clarify this and this apparently they check the fluid but unless either the fluid is dirty or the service computer mandates it, they don't perform either service. My understanding is that by saying "B service due", this was implicit (since Mercedes themselves include this in their list of items). What I think happened here was a difference in understanding about what Mercedes considers a B service and what the Garage considers a B service. This is acceptable given that they're not affiliated with Mercedes but for anyone looking to get their regular service here: make sure you tell them what you need done ahead of time! In the meantime, since I live about 30 miles from the Garage, I'll probably give somewhere more local a try for the oil and fluid change. read more

Exceptional Service. Today I stopped by to schedule a simple fix with no expectation to get in until later in the week, and staff & mechanic got my car fixed immediately at an exceptional rate. In addition, I was advised what to have examined if a repair is needed again regarding this particular car part/attachment. I am a repeat customer over 5+ years, and scheduling & location is very convenient. In the past year, they have inspected my car and gave me good rates & time frame on repairs, and explained to me what needed to be done immediately & what could wait regarding keeping my 10+ year old car operating at its best. Yet another visit at the Garage today. This time for a dead battery. Not a problem for Warren or the Garage team and took very good care of me once again. Replaced old OEM battery with new powerhouse Interstate unit featuring a whopping 850 cold cranking amps. The garage also competently cleared out all error and fault codes and messages associated with low voltage battery issue. Finally, they performed safety inspection, road test, while ensuring no error or fault codes returned after new battery was installed. Nicely done, Garage!! 5-star service and follow-through. These guys are extremely thorough, fast and honest. I'm always skeptical of car repair shops for obvious reasons, but never with Garage SF. Since moving to San Francisco, I've gone to a bunch of different shops and have been pretty dissatisfied until I came here. Also great: they offer to hail an uber for you (up to $10) after you drop your car off. But I usually walk home since I eat like a truck driver and could use the exercise. read more

I have taken my car there for several years. This place used to be good, but i took my 2011 Ford Escape there last week for its 95K service. I was asked when I needed it back, I said 2pm. The receptionist, Lily Caro, who later was identified on my paperwork as the "service adviser", said alright. I assumed that meant, it would be ready on time. Well I was never called and I called them at 4:45 pm and was told it was ready. I was never given any information about what was found needing repairs, except 2 tires that would need replaced soon. I said alright. They used give you a call and let you know what needs servicing when they are working on the car. At pick up all she gave me was a receipt with the payment info on it and not much else. They used to give you a link to all the items inspected, checked, replaced, and would reiterate things that need to be fixed. I was never called about anything needing work. I asked about the link for what they did, and was told, "I dont know, let me see". She was able to send the link to my email. When I could finally open the link, it listed several item, included: 1. valve cover gasket: Rec to replace engine valve cover 2. Front Suspension System: Left LCA bushings cracking/tearing Right LCA bushings cracking/tearing Replace control arm(s) 3. Drive Axle Boots: seeping Right and Rear inner 4. And a left blinker bulb not working. I was never told of any of these things. If the drive axle breaks, then the vehicle will not drive. I am not bringing my car back to them and will seek out a new mechanic. Something seems to have changed, and not for the better. This Lily person doesn't know anything about cars nor have any customer service. UPDATE I just got off the phone with Danny. He explained that Lily was new (only 3 days) and apologized for not being available to explain the recommended service needed. He said it wasnt urgent, but will need to be done in the future.
