Granted I've been friends of family for years, but I drive a 10yr old Mercedes Benz and I know with proper care my investment will last another 10 years easily. That is why the service I expect and get is equivalent to that of any Mercedes dealership. Cars today are more complex and require a significant investment in diagnostic equipment. The Garage has all of this, therefore I receive a full diagnosis and inspection, even if the main event is the annual oil change. And so I drive off on a road trip, fully confident the car will perform optimally and If youcarry me safely to destinations. Another thing I like is being able to drop the car off in the morning and pick it up at the end of the day. In the interim, the skytrain and transit gets me to where I am going. I came to this place because my friend's dad works at an auto body shop nearby and recommended it. $170 to take 5 minutes and plug a machine into my car's computer and read a code? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It was only after I paid that I came to realize how ridiculous this cost is, and luckily it was before I had anything fixed by these guys. I called 5+ other mechanics in the city who all laughed at this cost. The most any of them would charge to run this diagnostic was $50. I took my car to another mechanic who charged $600 for the same job that The Garage quoted me $1100 for...and guess what? They ran the diagnostic for FREE before advising that any work be done. I watched him do this in about 2 minutes. I'm not sure if they sized me up and thought that they could over charge because I'm a woman and I don't know a lot about cars, but I'm sure anyone who knows ANYTHING about cars would laugh in their faces if told it would cost $170 to run the diagnostic that takes 2 minutes. Needless to say, my friend's dad won't be recommending this place anymore. It's funny that places like this think that they're getting more money by ripping people off, but don't realize how much business they're forfeiting by gaining this bad reputation. read more

My first experience with The Garage was pulling in just as they were closing when the alternator belt had broken on my vehicle . I knew the vehicle would quit at any time once the battery ran down and expected I would have to leave it with them. Instead they replaced the belt with one they had that was a close fit, but not quite the right size and told me they would order in the correct belt. They sent me on my way without charging me anything. I mentioned I had neen having a problem with breaking alternator belts every few years and when they put in the correct belt they determined that during an earlier replacement at a Mazda dealership the dealer had installed a wrong sized pulley. Replacing the pulley solved my ongoing problem.This was the point I became a regular customer. They have done every service and mechanical repair on my vehicle since. The vehicle has now reached the age of collector status (over 25 yars old) and is still going strong. I appreciate that they have always kept me informed of what type of repairs and service will be required over the next couple of years. I have never had a bad experience here. They may not have the lowest hourly rate, but they know their business and can be trusted. This garage is best suited for those that take regular care of their vehicles rather than those that wait to deal with problems as they occur. read more

I found the customer service at the Garage to be exceptional. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I was able to get a detailed quote for some work that needed to be done on my van and I was able to bring it in when I wanted and have it fixed the same day. I expected to hear that I needed future work done, but what I got was a full inspection and safety checks which I found to be helpful and informative and provided me with a link to notes and photos of the areas that will need work and how urgent. Everything was very clear and thorough and left me feeling that my vehicle was left in good hands. I feel that the price was fair for the service provided and I would do business with this auto shop again in the future. read more

Had been a happy customer of this place for 3-4 years and always appreciated the very overpriced service they gave to me and my car eg nothing could ever be done without a "full diagnostics "oh yes!.Making it sound like they ran your car through some crazy futuristic machine. To cut a long story short I had been having trouble with a cylinder and knew from the sound of the engine that "my issue was back".I took my car to a mate's house , he grabbed his $50 Canadian tire diagnostics machine and plugged it in to the power outlet under the steering wheel, which flashed a code signalling "spark plug/cylinder 5".I went back to The Garage and for the first time told them that I had run the car through a cheap diagnostics machine and " my same issue " was back. I asked them to please just change just that front spark plug -Yes Was the reply! "We'll just run it through the diagnostics,$170.00.I said I'll give you $100.00 take it or leave it. He said "we'll leave it" -So much for customer service , all this time they made like we were mates too! So in concluding that 1 act slapped me in the face, woke me up .... Now I know how to change my own bloody spark plugs , thanks to Canadian tire (for a cheap diagnostic machine )and YOU TUBE. read more

Just called for a quote, left a very bad taste in my month. John, I believe it was terrible to tak to. He couldn't be bothered to talk about the vehicle or its specs, very arrogant belittling attitude just wanted it in the shop where I assume they would make it very hard and expensive to leave. The garage charged me close to $700 to check and fix my fogged windscreen. They performed a process to check for water leaks which left my car stuffy and smelling dank.Yet, it still didn't solve the problem of my fogged windscreen. I then called the Automotive Water Doctor who checked and subsequently changed my air filter. This cost $125 and fixed my fogged windscreen. The Automotive Water Doctor was quick, efficient and didn't gouge me for money like the Garage did. read more

I felt I needed to add a review as I always look through these myself to help me decide whether or not I will visit this business. I have given The Garage 5 stars as they totally deserve it! Right from walking through the front door we were made to feel so welcomed. I had never been here before so of course had my guard up but that came down pretty quickly... If you want to be treated fairly and "honestly" and be happy with the final outcome of your cars servicing then this is the place you want to go! They really do care about you and your car and it shows. You won't be sorry you took your car here! LOVE The Garage! During a recent visit to Vancouver my daughter's VW broke down. For safety reasons it had to be towed. She described the problem as "shaking, it feels like the wheels are going to fly off", not what you want to hear. I had only a few hours before I had to leave for Seattle to drop it somewhere. I received a couple of suggestions for mechanics in the Kits area from a friend who works at Dueck in Richmond. I chose The Garage because it was the closest to UBC and I am so grateful that I did!! I am so impressed with the service I received from Matthew and the staff at The Garage. I've had my fair share of experiences with garages in the past and for that reason was feeling pretty vulnerable towing a car into a place you know nothing about, having no choice but to put blind trust in someone and leave the country!. (here you go !!) . Matthew was extremely professional, patient and honest from the start.. He took all my calls (and there were many) or he called back right away, He was transparent and took the time to explain each step and the reason behind it. In the end it was a week before they were able to get to the root of the problem, it was admittedly a challenge but he promised to fix it and he did .The icing on the cake was the bill, it was so unbelievably fair, I am so grateful. The car is like new!! I can't tell you what an amazing experience it was to deal with Matthew and his staff, I would HIGHLY recommend the Garage to anyone, . Unless you want to pay twice as much for the same work & be w/o your car for a longer time, I would not recommend this place. They quoted me over $800 for rear brake job, after already charging a $70 inspection fee (twice as much as most places). I got quotes from 3 other shops for 1/2 that price (for the same work .... keep in mind I had an inspection in hand) & they could do the work the next day whereas the job couldn't guarantee my vehicle for the weekend. read more

I phoned the garage and spoke to John...presumably the same John mentioned in other reviews here. I told him that I got a leak in my radiator hose on a road trip, and a mechanic there got me back on the road by trimming the hose, but advised me to get it replaced when I got home. I said I'd like to make an appointment to have the radiator flushed and filled, and the hoses replaced at the same time. John explained that I would have to drop it off by 8:30am, so they could have a look at the problem first. So I brought my car in, and John filled in a form with questions about the problem. I thought it was a bit odd, because the questions were more like for, "There's a rattling noise and I don't know where it's coming from." I pointed out that we already knew the problem, because I'd already been to a mechanic. "So why don't you take it back to him?" John asked. Because John, it's a 5 hour drive there, and a 5 hour drive back. Hm...John didn't remember the phone conversation, and wasn't following the logic of the problem. Even though he remembered that we had the phone conversation; we talked about that. I know good help is hard to find, but this being BC, I feel like I'm talking to a dope smoker -- those short term memory lapses. So John prints out a slip of paper and slides it across the desk, and it says $148. Hang on John, you're going to charge me $148 just to look at it? "My bad" says John, "I should have mentioned that on the phone. Did you expect we weren't going to charge you?" (insert belittling tone here) Well, I say, I was expecting to pay about $150-200 to have this work done, not $148 before you even get started." John says, "We charge more than other places, but we're very thorough." Quick mental calculation here: $148 for diagnostics, $44 each for two rad hoses, 40 bucks for marked-up antifreeze, and another $148 for the labour. They're planning to charge me $450 to flush the rad! I point out that a lot of places advertise rad flush for $59+fluids, and again John misses the point, and says those places probably don't do a very good job. Yeah, but you're not charging 25%, or 50%, or even 100% more...you're charging ten times the amount! So it seems that The Garage's business model is to charge prices that aren't even competitive, and the customers they want are those not smart enough to realize they're paying ten times the going rate. I'm sure glad I walked away, because in my experience, mechanics under time pressure don't do as good a job as I do in my back yard, and I sure would be galled if I paid $450 and had to go back because of some oversight. Now I refuse to believe that the owner is telling John to do these things. And that means they've got an employee who is smiling and nodding when the boss is around, then doing stuff behind his back to drive customers away.
