There was a large pot of made-from-scratch soup to warm the bones on offer, too. After chatting with the very amiable and knowledgeable French proprietor, I purchased a few different cured meats and a lovely, somewhat stinky cheese. Their food was underwhelming. I ordered the Escargots and the mussels mariniere. The escargots were well executed. They came in a butter/garlic sauce that was too salty. The mussels were 1/4 unopened. The sauce was watery and not memorable. The mussels that did open were soggy and not super fresh. The bread served with this dish was slightly stale and did not naturally soak up the mussel sauce.

Here, there is none of the intimacy that you get at Casse-Croûte but it somehow still feels personal and cozy. A seasonal menu is presented for lunch and dinner, with a selection of starters bolstered by several solid mains. No specials were on offer, so presumably the menu stays as is for a few months. Each main was intended for two, but such generous portions meant that this solo diner had to choose a couple of starters. The onion soup was a delicious, less filling twist on the classic version with a cheesy foam on top and a sablé to accompany, rather than the standard heavy croûte. The black pudding scotch egg was actually comprised of boudin noir, not black pudding which gave it a softer almost pasty interior that sat nicely in contrast to the crisp crumbed exterior. The enclosed egg was runny soft and rich. The sweet and earthy purée that the egg sat on complemented it well, though I found the scattered pickled chanterelles to be too sharp and acidic to work with the other ingredients. Some fragrant eau de vie de poire kept me going until the blueberry soufflé arrived with a dollop of rich pistachio ice cream. Overall: I'd go back, with my wife, to be able to unlock more of the menu. Pricey, but worth it if you want to eat something special whilst feeling comfortable.

I like the ambiance of the restaurant during lunch. Bright, airy, fresh.. with views of the high rises around you. The food was great. Our waiter forgot to place our order. Instead of letting us know he'd forgotten he just kept us waiting and starving. After waiting almost an hour I asked a girl behind the bar to check the order and I took my seat. I had to get up again to ask her where our food was because she had forgotten to come over and tell us what was going on. She finally let me know that our order wasn't put in, she'd put a rush on the food but it would be at least another 5 minutes. I asked for some complimentary bread since we were absolutely starving at which she replied she could give us complimentary drinks but she would have to check with her manager about the bread. We waited another 5 minutes and our food still didn't arrive so we left. Upon leaving I told the manager why we were leaving and he responded with a polite, "ok". Mistakes obviously happen and generally when they do you cop to them and apologize. But not the French Cafe, not even one, "so sorry we fucked up here's a free slice of bread". There are so many other great spots in Balham - I won't be wasting my time or money at this one again.

It was absolutely amazing! Everything in this cafe is recyclable and reusable! I just love how they reuse bottles to store sugar and even for their plants! Also the baristas were so kind! Definitely visit this cafe if you are nearby!
