I discovered mother tongue brand at a place called Tamper Room in Fremont. I had bought some beans…read morefor my dad, and he enjoyed, so was so excited to see that there is a cafe close by. The space is lovely. I love a cafe that has different seating options in terms of height, and there is a lovely spacious outdoor area as well. It's functions well as a work and social gathering space. I tried a guava pastry that was delicious and got a lot of work done (I worked in 3 spots since I like to move around when I work). Service was great, and there are so many drink options as well! Looking forward to returning soon!

Part coffee shop, part cocktail bar - I'll take one of each please! They make good, hand-crafted cocktails; the espresso martini, topped with ancho chili powder is my partner's favorite, he will request to go here specifically for this beverage. I don't believe they have a food program besides some pastries. Would love to see some breakfast and lunch options offered; it would entice us to hang out even longer. Music is good and upbeat - definitely extra points from me on that. Pay attention to the leaflets/posters and other materials they have at the entrance and around the establishment, you might be pleasantly surprised at what you find. Last time we were in, I picked up a calendar of free classes on various highly useful skills, offered by a local organization. I highly recommend checking out the classes, and would have never found them if not for Mother Tongue. Open 7 to 7 daily, which is great. We'll be in again soon.

Let's get this out of the way: I am going to sound like a curmudgeon, so first the good stuff:…read more Spacious, lots of breathing room, free street parking on William(s)? St. Pleasant soundtrack for working. 11 tables with power. Two long high-tops. Nicely decorated with what I assume is local art. The neutral stuff: All of the tables were occupied busy at 11:45 but there was no line at the counter. The Questionable: There is an $0.50 upcharge for ice. ICE. The same water that makes up 99% of your $6.00+ beverage. That's true. Fact-check it: In a standard 12-ounce cup of brewed coffee, the actual coffee content--measured as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)--is typically between 1.15% and 1.35%, with water making up the remaining ~98.65% to 98.85%. As I wasn't notified beforehand saying, the ice--the solid version of the water that is most of your beverage--and the volume displaced by the ice does not add to the water which fills in. In fact, ice is less dense than the liquid form, so one might argue that there is in fact less water than if cold tea, no ice, were requested. But I digress. I acknowledge the hour but the place was pleasantly abuzz--the staff was not in the weeds. Waiting ten minutes for an iced tea and a warmed croissant isn't a tragedy, but when the pastry arrives cold, it's just annoying. Especially when you've tipped $2 on $11 for counter service. Now, the seating: the two-tops are too small to ask to share without being awkward. After sitting at a bar-height table on a backless stool for an hour, and having the first table that opened up sniped by a man much younger and faster than I, was a real bummer. After nearly two hours and my back and neck legitimately hurting from hunching over my computer, and my power dwindling, I packed up and left. I regret that I took no photos but I had work to do.

My friend and I aren't really coffee drinkers, so she got a bottle of Virgil's Root Beer and Bernie's Cider, and I got an Iced Tea. I loved that the tea wasn't sugary, allowing the actual tea flavor to shine. Even though we were stuffed from brunch, we both got cookies with our drinks: lemon and peanut butter. I also bought a slice of caramel apple cake for myself and the s'mores roll to take to my mom. I tried a bite of the lemon cookie, and it was really good, but since I was full, I saved the rest for later. There's plenty of seating inside, and they were playing country music, which was a fun surprise that made us smile. There was plenty of street parking; the staff were super friendly and helpful. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd definitely try the matcha next time.

Today's the day! I love this place! It's a short walk from my place and was one of the first places I started to frequent when I moved here almost two years ago. The staff's great. I always enjoy the music they play. There's plenty of seating. All of their food/baked goods are made in house. All their offerings are high quality. It's a dairy free establishment. Neither here nor there for me, as I drink a variety of different milks. I'm very fortunate to have this option in my neighborhood.
