This is my first time going to a cafe where you can play board games with your friends and other people. They charge you $8 per person for you to gain access to any board games from the shelves you want to play and you can stay here as long as you like until they're closed. You can also ask to reserve a table and buy one of their game passes to save money! The place is very hectic here. There were many people playing board games with their friends. There weren't many options for me to sit. I didn't want to sit outside. So, I decided to sit indoors. Some of the tables were reserved and some reserved ones are open to patrons who are not part of the reservations until a certain time. For example, I sat at a reserved table until close to 2:30pm, which is when reserved customers will take over the table. There are plenty of food options here: sandwiches, pizzas, pastries, and cafe drinks. There are all sorts of menus there too if you take a look at the chalkboard. One of them happens to be a schedule of activities. I didn't participate in gaming tabletops, but I did try out of their sandwiches and their cafe drinks. The turkey sandwich is good and honey lavender latte tastes sweet. My drink came here 10 minutes more than my sandwich, which is quite odd, because usually sandwiches take longer to prep. Not only that, but drinks take way longer to prep, which I don't know why. I like how the sandwich is prepped with chips sitting at the middle of the silver plate surrounded by sandwich slices. Overall, the experience is great with many people playing board games. I probably should take one of my friends to play board games for experience and get pizza even when I never play board games for years. It'd be an awesome experience! read more

A fun place to hang out and play board games with friends, with decent drinks and food! We celebrated a birthday here and had a good time learning & playing a new board game together. I got the Turkey to Ride sandwich (4.5/5), which was tasty and satisfying, and came with chips on the side. I also got a matcha latte with oat milk (4/5) that had subtle flavor. If you're even thinking about going here, do it! I will "level up" to the games :), but am here now working on my laptop. It's excellent. Lots of people gaming & having a great time, and some, like myself, doing work on the computer. All ages. There's a pleasant hum of humanity, but nothing that airpods won't assist with, if that's what you need. People -- including the staff here tonight -- have been uniformly friendly and kind. There's a huge gaming library behind me as I type this! The chai-der (home-made chai using real ginger and apple cider vinegar) is delicious (a rockin' staff person gave me a small sample and I was pleasantly surprised: it's awesome!). Wifi is solid and the mochi muffin hit the spot. They minimize use of disposables with food and drink, i.e. they use real cups and plates, which rocks. This place had a good board game selection and I loved how they were categorized into buckets such as "2 players" and "co-ops". On top of that they also tried to color code the complexity level of each board game - green (easy to learn) to red (more difficult). I wasn't a big fan of the tables and the chairs that they provided though. For one, the chairs weren't comfortable and many of them weren't not cushioned. Secondly the shop was super crowded and the tables weren't spaced enough for people to sit comfortably - once we sat down we couldn't get out anymore. But we still had fun playing games. Also they came up with a silly 2-purchase requirement to waive the $8 admission fee for the OGN. One could purchase 2 donuts for $7 and get the fee waived, but we chose their sandwich priced at $15 and still had to purchase a second item. They should waive the fee after a certain amount of purchase in my opinion. But their King in the North sandwich was delicious, although they ran out of ham. They also ran out of sourdough. This is a great place to go for game enthusiasts who have limited space to host game night, or don't have storage for games, or to try out a game before buying, or to be in a bustling café filled with spirited conversation. Out of hundreds of options, we were able to select and try a few games in about an hour and a half. A helpful staff member showed us how to play a game and usefully taught us a house rule that improved upon the game. I would say that while kids are welcome and there are kids games available, the prices might seem a little high for a family to regularly stop in for an hour. It's a flat rate, which works out well for people who are making a day or evening of it. Unlike your run-of-the-mill cafe, the eccentric Victory Point Cafe boasts over 700 board games and an extensive food and drink menu. My party came on a Thursday night to find a bustling crowd with tables being occupied by board game enthusiasts and students alike. Despite the crowd, we were able to snag a table. There were QR codes printed on the table for patrons to use a text message ordering system, and the QR codes stated that we'd receive a 10% discount for ordering via text message. Incentivized by the 10% discount, we tried placing our orders but somehow the orders never went through. After about 5 minutes finicking with the system, we ultimately decided to order at the register and forgo the discount. We ordered a honey mustard club sandwich and a BBQ chicken pizza. The honey mustard club sandwich arrived after about 15 minutes, and it was phenomenal. I certainly wasn't expecting one of the best sandwiches in Berkeley to be hidden in a cafe off Shattuck. Seriously, the club made me see God. But, after twenty minutes, our pizza still hadn't arrived and then another twenty passed and then another. An hour for a pizza seemed a bit ludicrous but perhaps it was just an off night. When the pizza finally came unfashionably late, it wasn't the stuff of dreams. It was a uniformly soggy heap with a mildly crispy crust. The pizza dough was gummy, an indication that it hadn't been cooked nearly as long as it should. And, the barbecue sauce was overly sweet. Not a fan. I'd say come back for the sandwiches, but if you're looking for a place to study, I'd look elsewhere. They lack outlets, and the place can get pretty loud what with the nearby board game enthusiasts. This summer I wrote a middling review and I was contacted and I received a reply telling me that the underwhelming food and service where going to be improved, and I am here to gladly report that both are now true. To have my negative feedback be not only welcomed, but see it being addressed makes me so happy. Victory Point Cafe lives up to it's stellar reputation. Last night, I ordered the pesto turkey sandwich, caprese salad, and herbal iced tea, and all of them were excellently made and brought outside to my table. The portions on the sandwich were generous and the pesto mayo was the perfect condiment. The salad was tossed and dressed very well. The balsamic dressing was a little too sweet for my taste, but the mixed in basil balanced it out exceptionally well. I will definitely be ordering those two dishes again. Good outdoor dining can be tricky to find. Often, service just can't deal with the expanded area too well when bogged down with too many indoor customers. I have been at VPC several times since July and I am so glad this is no longer the case. read more

I used to live nearby, and I and my housemates would sometimes walk here and play games here that we already owned at home, because it's such a fun environment. I'm in Oakland now, but still sometimes come here for dates. I should probably check out if there are good board game cafes in Oakland, haha, but I definitely have some VPC loyalty. (2) I organized a speed dating event here, and Rory, the event coordinator, was *incredible*. Extremely responsive over email beforehand, and very, very helpful during the event. The venue, of course, is also amazing - we had selected several games beforehand, and Rory set them aside. He also helped arrange tables, deliver food, advise about games, and frequently asked us if there was anything else he could help with. I would definitely organize more events here. read more

The board game selection is fantastic. I'm not super knowledgeable about games, but I recognized the names of quite a few that have been recommended to me recently by avid board game fans. There were plenty of Magic the Gathering games going on as well as a birthday party which took up a good chunk of the tables. While there are usually a few brave souls studying here, most of them are wearing headphones to drown out the noise. There are tables in the front parklet, but since the cafe is on Shattuck, the street traffic doesn't offer any respite. The food and drinks here are solid, and the staff are very friendly. You are welcome to bring your own games in or rent any of the hundreds of games in stock for a nominal fee. I first came here just because I needed a cafe where I could study at and get some work done. Little did I know this place would become a regular spot! Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere, great wifi, great hours... I will say that because it is also a place for people to come and play games, it gets quite loud at certain times such as evening hours and Sunday so probably not the best to try and do work at those times. Their King in the North sandwich is absolutely delicious. The spicy maple aioli that's in it is the component that makes the sandwich so special. Victory Point is a cute cafe with a bunch of games. You have to pay $8 per person for access to the games, but there is no time limit. The workers are very friendly and they have a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. They have a pretty big menu as well. I tried the chai latte (2.5/5) and a vanilla latte (4/5). The chai had a very weird taste, but the vanilla latte was solid and the coffee was not bitter at all. read more

I was searching for a cafe that open late and that's how I found Victory Point. I was meeting my friend to do homework and this place was perfect. I think I found my studying spot for the rest of Grad school! You have to look for street parking but there was plenty of parking available around the area and parking wasn't an issue for me. At first, I was a bit hesitant coming here because this is technically a "board game launch" and I wasn't sure how studying here would go but it was perfect! I got here about 12:30ish and I stayed until about 5ish! By then more people were coming and people started to play games and order beer. I saw several people who were there before I got there and they were still working/studying when I left. The cafe ambience is nice and the employees are wonderful. I ordered the King in the North sandwich in a ciabatta bread and it was amazing! The bread was perfectly toasted and the flavor was on point. I also ordered with my sandwich a Honey Lavender Latte and I am so impressed! The combo sounds odd but the lavender taste was very subtle and it was just delicious! I also had a matcha latte later and it was just as good! It also looks like a super fun place to hang out with friends and place some games.
