Paulas Traditional Fish And Chips - At the counter.

Paulas Traditional Fish And Chips

I'd read some glowing reviews of this fish & chip shop so I kept it in mind. I don't eat this food…read morevery often now but I did eat a lot of it in my early teens, but that's a whole other story. So pulled up into the car park, two degrees outside and 'are we human or are we dancer' coming out of the radio as I turned off the engine. First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

We were lodged at the Mill & needed a quick bite to eat before an event. We thought: fish n' chips…read more So we found this spot, walked in & I said 'I want fish n chips' and the young man looked at me like I seriously needed to specify- there's many variations I had not thought of.. gravy chips, haddock or cod? Soda, as in bread? Cod bites? We went with haddock & gravy on the side for the chips. Hubby also got a kebab to soak up the whiskey mess that was bound to happen later. I have to say, a generous delightful serving of both the fish n' the chips. Kebab was overstuffed, in a good way.

Instead this stays as another local favourite and for good reason: it does delicious chips and its extensive menu is great too. They offer good value meals deals in here, and everything in here has been really tasty from my experiences. The batter on their fishes is rich and crispy, their burgers are succulent and full of flavour and everything else is equally delicious. They also do homemade Italian style ice cream in here which is really delicious, with milkshake options to act as a post main meal dessert. The staff here are courteous and polite, and the place is kept spotless which is important in shops like this. There is also ample parking out front or to the rear so there isn't the same parking worry for food that many other Downpatrick places would be suffering from!

We just recently heard about this place from friends when we were out to dinner with them. They…read morejust happened to drive by it and gave it a try on the spur of the moment. We just happened to be passing by too about a week later and also decided to give it a go. So we got a fish & chips - cod of course - and the food was top notch. The batter was light and crisp and not greasy. The cod was Persil white, moist and chunky. It was a good portion too. The chips were perfectly cooked too exactly as they should be. The meal was £5. Now there was a downside as I was not offered salt or vinegar. Imagine fish & chips without salt and vinegar. I didn't see either about so while I would ordinarily knock a star off for such howlers I'm not going to because the quality of food and portion size for a fiver is a fair deal and it's only right to be fair right back but I would recommend they invest in salt and vinegar. Finally, as I waited for my meal the guy behind the counter was making what looked like pizza bases and firing them into an oven. They came out like a dinner plate sized cross between a nan bread and a pitta bread and more toward pitta. These were the base for chicken and lamb kebabs and this type of food is just so appealing when it's fresh and good.
