So pulled up into the car park, two degrees outside and 'are we human or are we dancer' coming out of the radio as I turned off the engine. First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

I had intended just ordering a couple of portions of fish & chips here because I'd been a few times and they do do this food very well indeed. They use cod and Maris Piper potatoes so with ingredients this good it's hard to go too far wrong but there are places that manage to go wrong. Then as I looked at the menu I decided on one portion of fish & chips and a pizza. The reason was that it had dawned on me as I stood reading the menu that this was the guy who made pizzas in Fusion, a great restaurant which is just across the street from here. Fusion does great food and I began to recall the previous owner Mark praising this guys pizzas to me a few times. Having experienced bad pizzas before not least the overpriced and grim Dominos and Pizza Hut I tended to stop listening when people told me that pizzas somewhere around are great. So I abandoned one of the two fish & chip portions and instead I had a goat's cheese with chilli jam & basil. I was tempted by the fish offering but once I saw no anchovy I abandoned the thought. I tried the 9 inch size at just under £6 and it was a real taste sensation. I'd made the right choice. Now that I know it's so very good for pizza it'll be the 12 inch next time and I'll experiment with some other offerings.

Service here was lax, the seating wasn't comfy, the fish and chips were not as well-cooked and certainly not as crisp, hot and tasty, but the worst of all was that it was almost double the price when we factor in the fact that the Kilkeel deal includes a soft drink. I really dislike being ripped off. The price difference would cover the fuel cost for the extra 24 mile round trip. Far better fish bites, chips and a soft drink was £3 a head cheaper in PitStop Kilkeel. The plates here also had a small amount of salad which was incongruous on the plate given the fact we were eating deep-fried, battered food. If we had ordered a fish and chip meal deal we would have had tea, bread and butter. The addition of these nominal cost tea & bread would have required another fiver a head. In short and sadly it's poor value and it's also below average quality and we will not return. We were also the only sit in diners - quelle surprise.

The cod was pre cooked and not cooked to order from fresh, cooking to order might be an idea when not busy. The chips were made from new potatoes. The cod was very fresh and really chunky, almost perfect for me, but I would prefer a lighter batter. The owner is Italian and I'm around long enough to remember the Italian families that called this town home in the 1960's like the Maloccas and the wonderful Scappaticci family, Frederico, Lily and Umberto. So I imagine he could produce a lighter batter easily. The chips too were perfectly cooked. The guy took time to cook the food just right and he drained off the food a while after it came out of the fryer. Sure beats the fast food burger places by a very long way.

This out of town fish & chip shop is here almost a year and a half…read more It's located in the same location as a fuel station and a well stocked Spar mini supermarket. A cod & chip is £6.40. The cod was really fresh, but it was a thin piece of fish for the price (£4). The batter is good and light, thankfully it isn't greasy, but it's not great. Worst of all the batter doesn't stay crisp for very long which is essential (the whole idea of batter is not just to coat but to be a light, crisp shell) so it spoiled our enjoyment of the food, so maybe the batter needs some experimental trials as crispy batter would make it great. A portion of french fried onions is £2 and they are darn good. They stayed crispy a bit longer than the fish. Staff are a friendly bunch. Prices are fine, service was prompt and next time we'll eat in the carpark to have crispy batter.

We visit the harbour from time to time and we saw this trailer and saw just how popular it was. It was only by chance that we were passing through Kilkeel and thought well let's if it's still there. The cod was cooked to order and was the best I've eaten in years. The batter was incredibly light, crisp and literally dissolved on biting. The chips too crisp outside fluffy inside. I doubt any Michelin chef could do better or if they could it would be negligible and likely 12 times the price. What is proves also is that my home town doesn't have a decent fish and chip place. Not even close. The harbour was quite sedate and post Brexit it will be fascinating if the politicians don't shaft the fisher folk as this place should become a hive of industry. At present the Spanish & French and other European fisher folk can trawl up to 12 miles off shore. Post December 2020 it's 200 miles. Anyway what will be will be.

We waited to be seated but there wasn't anyone to seat us. We waited far too long and when the waitress - the older of the only two waitresses serving/ arrived. The greeting was flat and almost felt like she was being put out. She arrived just in time as the barman was about to seat us. I've eaten here hundreds of times over the years. I ordered oysters as a starter only for the waitress to return a few moments later to confirm they had none. Well that's a first. Carlingford Oyster company is a few miles away. So my order became seafood chowder and fillet steak medium. My side dish tobacco onions. My son also ordered the chowder which for the half lifetime I've been eating it here has been superb but not this time. We each knew it wasn't as rich and deep flavoured as before and we were really disappointed. This is one of their finest dishes and we really hope this is a one off. If it happens again we'll send it back and have it off the bill. The price charged means it must be ace every time. I asked for white pepper for my chowder the availability of which was uncertain and when it arrived the younger waitress said I was lucky. If white pepper isn't always available just close. It's not as important as salt is to cooking but it's great for seasoning. I often choose it over black pepper almost always. My fillet was requested medium and it came with a pepper sauce that didn't pour but moved sludge like in lumps in short it was gloop; if it had cream it wasn't discernible nor had it evidence of butter. It tasted factory made. One of the corner stones of the success of Fitzpatrick's was cooking based on classic French cooking (Escoffier) and sauces. It elevates their chowder and onion soups and makes sauces moreish - this pepper sauce is far away from this and it's not and nowhere near good enough. If Danny was still there this sauce wouldn't be and no chef would have had the nerve to put it before him. My fillet was well done, medium to well and medium as I proceeded through it. I'm not precious about it and it was tasty good quality meat which I enjoyed. I only draw a line at bloody meat. My son always opts for rare. The tobacco onions were superbly flavoured stand out 5 stars. I asked for English mustard for my steak but it never arrived and the two overworked waitresses were nowhere to be seen. As desserts weren't offered due to their invisibility I got up to pay. There were five or six guests in the doorway waiting to be seated just as we were earlier that evening and no waitress around. The barman took our payment and I didn't tip which I didn't like but I was not happy. I told the barman some of the issues lousy pepper sauce, non delivery of mustard and poor tasting chowder: he said he'd pass it on. Next time I will return food that's not up to the standard I'm used to at the prices charged.
