Chalky, watery taste - melts fast. Cold mix methinks. Dont stand around too long or it will melt down yer hand!

Paulas Traditional Fish And Chips - At the counter.

Paulas Traditional Fish And Chips

I'd read some glowing reviews of this fish & chip shop so I kept it in mind. I don't eat this food…read morevery often now but I did eat a lot of it in my early teens, but that's a whole other story. So pulled up into the car park, two degrees outside and 'are we human or are we dancer' coming out of the radio as I turned off the engine. First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

Oh good grief. At last, at long last, I've found pizza that's worth eating…read more The last time I had pizza this good at this price I was in Naples at one of the notoriously good family places that had cheerful queues outside. I had intended just ordering a couple of portions of fish & chips here because I'd been a few times and they do do this food very well indeed. They use cod and Maris Piper potatoes so with ingredients this good it's hard to go too far wrong but there are places that manage to go wrong. Then as I looked at the menu I decided on one portion of fish & chips and a pizza. The reason was that it had dawned on me as I stood reading the menu that this was the guy who made pizzas in Fusion, a great restaurant which is just across the street from here. Fusion does great food and I began to recall the previous owner Mark praising this guys pizzas to me a few times. Having experienced bad pizzas before not least the overpriced and grim Dominos and Pizza Hut I tended to stop listening when people told me that pizzas somewhere around are great. So I abandoned one of the two fish & chip portions and instead I had a goat's cheese with chilli jam & basil. I was tempted by the fish offering but once I saw no anchovy I abandoned the thought. I tried the 9 inch size at just under £6 and it was a real taste sensation. I'd made the right choice. Now that I know it's so very good for pizza it'll be the 12 inch next time and I'll experiment with some other offerings.

We just recently heard about this place from friends when we were out to dinner with them. They…read morejust happened to drive by it and gave it a try on the spur of the moment. We just happened to be passing by too about a week later and also decided to give it a go. So we got a fish & chips - cod of course - and the food was top notch. The batter was light and crisp and not greasy. The cod was Persil white, moist and chunky. It was a good portion too. The chips were perfectly cooked too exactly as they should be. The meal was £5. Now there was a downside as I was not offered salt or vinegar. Imagine fish & chips without salt and vinegar. I didn't see either about so while I would ordinarily knock a star off for such howlers I'm not going to because the quality of food and portion size for a fiver is a fair deal and it's only right to be fair right back but I would recommend they invest in salt and vinegar. Finally, as I waited for my meal the guy behind the counter was making what looked like pizza bases and firing them into an oven. They came out like a dinner plate sized cross between a nan bread and a pitta bread and more toward pitta. These were the base for chicken and lamb kebabs and this type of food is just so appealing when it's fresh and good.

Firstly this take away only place appears to be open for years now but I only spotted it a few…read moreweeks ago. I decided that I'd try it out but the first time after deciding to try it there was a queue extending out the door; but I think it might have been one of those religious - only eat fish - days. As it happened my first visit was accidental as I just happened to be quarter of a mile from it at dinner time and passing by it for home. There is some parking outside it but the road is heavily trafficked and you need to be careful as you reverse out. The queue was small in number, about four in front of me, as I placed my cod n chips order at a whopping £7.50. These are London prices. In fact at this price I cold enjoy (and very recently did enjoy) a sit in Harry Ramsden's cod, chips and mushy peas in the Lowry centre, Manchester. I noticed the lack of interaction between staff and customers. Once an order was placed with payment and salt and vinegar confirmed we stand back in silence waiting for our food. No craic, no real engagement between customers and staff. The cod I got was ok but thinner than I'd like. The good thing was that the fish batter which wasn't too greasy survived until I got home, without becoming soggy. The chips were good too but as I said the Harry's meal was streets ahead, particularly in quality and the size of good cod. Would I return here. No. I'd rather drive to the Pit Stop, Kilkeel for a superb sit in cod & chips that puts this food well in the shade and for less money as their sit-in provides a soft drink.
