I was invited for my birthday by family, as a surprise, and they chose here. It certainly was a surprise to me to be here and we had an exceptional Sunday lunch. We chose starters of turnip soup, air dried beef and a seafood chowder with samphire. The starters were accompanied by different breads, the turnip soup and seafood chowder both had Guinness wheaten bread with butter, and my air dried beef had an ace white bread which was almost the texture and certainly the lightness of brioche, and it was delicious. The portion of very delicate tasting dried beef to bread was about right. The beef was similar in style to good Parma ham and a good portion with green olives on the side. We do forget just how good real bread is - and places like this shows us what we are missing. Supermarket and big industrial bakery wheaten & white breads are mostly so poor that we have become used to inferior, cheap food, but not at a cheap price. Our mains were cod, beef and pork. All the portions were generous. I almost always choose the beef main here, and once again it was pretty darn good. If I return here, I'll likely go for it again. There were also small cubes of moreish fried potato on the plate. The cep & pepper sauce accompaniment was exceptionally tasty. We also had perfectly cooked roast potatoes and baby potatoes boiled in jackets, with snap peas, cauliflower, carrots and garden peas. I also benefitted from my wife's pork crackling, which was part of her lunch main. I enjoyed it immensely too. My family also declared their starters and mains as delicious. None of us had room for desserts, so we got cappuccinos. Again the quality and great coffee flavour were high end. The service was fine with our server being particularly welcoming and friendly. Two courses £17; three courses £20. Normally I'd give four stars but really when I consider the quality and portion against price paid it's deservedly five star. read more
