I can't recommend this place enough! I was with a group of 6 gal pals exploring Northern Ireland, and this recommendation came from our cab driver in Dublin a few days prior. We decided to check it out since it was on our way to Belfast, and we were so glad we did! What an AWESOME spot! The decor is incredible - so many little old school trinkets jammed in every little cranny - it makes it feel like grandmas house, and so charming at that. And the food... everything we ordered (which was a lot!) was incredibly delicious! The bread they served for appetizer was so good we bought a loaf to take with us for breakfast the next day! Highly highly recommend the French Onion Soup - best I've ever had. And the fried fish/shrimp appetizer was delicious and so cute - served on individual forks! The beet and goat cheese app was also superb. I could go on and on about how much I loved this place, from the decor to the food to the service, but instead I'll leave it at this: Visit! If I'm ever back in the area I know that I'll for sure be back. Yum!

I found Fitzpatrick's a weird place when I went for a drink on 12/08/2017. Part of me initially almost liked it, but the greater part of me didn't, especially the longer I spent there. It's a traditional-style country pub and restaurant with an over-the-top plethora of flowers outside. Initially it looks quaint but there are just strange elements to it, specifically eerie statues, ornaments, skeletons and scarecrow like figures randomly placed - even within the florals. It all just gave me the creeps and was like something from a horror b-movie (think hallowe'en in a garden centre!). Another thing I found distasteful was an on-site animal petting farm filled with various animals including donkeys and meerkats. I'm not a fan of animals held captive in zoos or petting farms, especially not at a pub where people are consuming alcohol. Other than this, our drinks were average, though service was slow and there didn't seem to be enough staff about. Overall I found this an odd establishment, was glad to leave, and wouldn't return.

A fun and kitschy place. We arrived just after serving time at 9:35 pm but they were accommodating allowing ordering from starters and desserts. We had the mixed seafood "fish & chips" style with a salad instead of chips. It was fried perfectly and served on forks in a standing up fashion. See picture. We also had the shrimp scampi which was served with a bit of rice in a white cream sauce spiced with coriander and chili. It was delicious. I finished with a chocolate chip cookie. It was rather large but suffered from tasting like it sat in the cooler too long. I should've gone for the fruit pie!

This place is amazing but expect a Wait bc it's the first place on M1 north of Dublin for food. If there's only 2'in party you can sit at bar and at as well. Staff very friendly. Bar man was friendly and tentative. I had wigs - good. The seafood bisque was out of his world.

My brother-in-law recommended this place and I'm still dreaming of their creamy seafood chowder. Probably the best I've had, honestly. This is a cozy, memorbilia-filled place. They are known for their chowder (€ 7.50) as well as the thick brown bread that accompanies their soups. I sampled some of my sister's garlic prawn salad ( €8.95) as well. Very flavorful and a large portion, even though it was touted as a "starter" salad. There were 4 of us dining and our meals plus drinks came to around €56. We purchased a loaf of the brown bread for €7. I look forward to dining here again. Great atmosphere here as well.

This is the restaurant part of Darver castle. There's usually a real charm to be found in places…read morelike this. I rang to enquire about when the Sunday lunch menu ended and if a booking was needed. The lilting answer was 'a sure around four o clock and, sure let us know a half hour beforehand and we'll sort a table for you.' My chief interest here is the quality of the food versus the cost, then comfort and service. It's a high bar as I have to pass my favourite Fitzpatrick's to try this place and believe me it's a big ask. I do remember being here long ago, it was a Saturday night meal with friends but it's a vague memory, so I read some recent reviews and the fact is that most of these relate to wedding day functions. Clearly the owners focus a lot on this business for sensible reasons. This place is in the countryside. So I used the coordinates provided on the hotel website, popped them into my Garmin and we set off. The posh lady on the sat nav politely directed us right to the front door. There's plenty of car parking in the extensive grounds. The castle's restaurant is a big place and its called the grain store, it's not a part of the castle and it's one floor up from ground level (temperamental lift available but ring for a staff member). The restaurant was fairly packed when we got there and the atmosphere was lively and fun. The roof and walls are decorated with bits of armour and swords, old aluminium milk churns and brewery and distillery style mirrors. The friendly owner arranged for the three of us to get a cosy table and quickly. The three course Sunday lunch with tea or coffee is €22.50 and is real value for money. The food too is darn good. I began with a bountiful, tasty smoked fish in white wine, garlic and chilli with long grain boiled white rice. Really good wheaten breads were served up with butter with the starters. My main was a good but not exceptional well done roast beef. a fair portion serving with unseasoned mash and an alright Yorkshire pudding, with a deep fried (roast) potato. They had Colman's English mustard too, the world's greatest mustard, delivered within minutes of my asking and the roasted mostly root, oven vegetables were really exceptional in terms of taste and a hot temperature. I had a very good creme brûlée dessert too with a home made chocolate cookie, ginger biscuit would be an improvement, pre frozen fruit coulis and fresh cream. Sadly all of the apple sponge was gone already but then it was mid - afternoon. My companions had some different choices: vegetable soup and salmon mains and chocolate type desserts and each affirmed satisfaction. The coffee is excellent. It's a solid four stars and yes there were some downsides and I start with being picky; some of the food wasn't hot enough including my starter and potato mash main, the Yorkshire pudding and the plate should be much hotter, the margarine based flaky pastry parcel with the salmon main offers nothing additional to the dish. A real no no was the creme brûlée top, it wasn't crunchy so it had to be sitting around too long before serving. And an absolute no no was the young waitress who took our food order - she did not make eye contact with any of the three of us as we have our orders l, beyond about a second or two apiece, instead she was mostly looking all about her staring around into the distance. Now this is really so off - putting and just not good enough and took some of the charm away. Hey girl it's the hospitality industry and not the hostility industry. Finally the staff were mega busy and mostly cheerful. We'll certainly be repeat customers.

It wasn't his fault his only mistake was choosing here. There is absolutely no satisfaction in writing a review like this. None. Moreover and regardless I think it will not change what desperately needs change but at least readers are informed. The staff are delightful. The place is real cosy. Parking is free WiFi is reliable. The problem is that the carvery food is really awful and overpriced. Our memories of the food here is just this. I took the meat to give to the dogs. I ate the potato mash and cabbage; the portion of each was mean. It's old folks home standard on an alright day that we queued for. I got some Cajun pepper sauce from another Bain Marie container (the gravy looked unappealing) and it's obviously not made from fresh in house - factory made maybe even a packet mix requiring no skill or food knowledge only water. The English mustard too is poor quality it's oil based, cheap and in a tube where it stayed. Just nasty rubbish served intentionally. The cappuccino is grim and for this there's no excuse either. Management may rebut my opinion and the opinion of my wife and our host but this has been our experience time and again over many years. It's been a long time since we last dined here. We had hoped it had improved and we said how bad can the food be as we made our way there. Sadly the answer is very very.

We were a large group. Gotta say it was a heck of a disappointment with the only five star parts…read morethe welcome from the staff and the pleasant ambiance. The food was poor to awful. The overall consensus was it wasn't worth it quality v cost. I had a watery vegetable curry and boiled rice. It was a Chinese style insipid curry sauce, supermarket bought, and to add insult to injury this was overpriced at £12. The predominant vegetable was broccoli and not much else. It was the worst meal I've had in a few years. Those who had pizzas in our group disliked them as both said what they each got was doughy, soggy and again they felt factory -made, bought - in pizza bases with each costing a rip off £15. I could go on to include the hair in the food and the chipped pint beer glass (chipped glass can happen anywhere) and our relief was that our guest didn't get a cut, and mention a bit of discount for the unwanted hair and broken glass and that they were happy with us bringing a brought - in 'cut it yourself' birthday cake, but all in all the food was poor to near average and all of it way overpriced for what was on our plates. The coffees were good mind. It's off our list. If you are thinking of a meal out I recommend Sinton's (it was our first choice and closed on this night) or Fitzpatricks while each is a bit more expensive (Sinton's is near same price and their red curry is the best I've tasted outside a Thai restaurant) the food quality is far and away superior. A real shame about Rice's as it was so good from memory.

We literally haven't been in this place for 30 years as we had no reason to go…read more Saturday past 27 August 2022 we were very close by and as it was lunch time we thought why not. There's lots of parking around and a very pleasant Costa coffee bar sharing the same space. On hotel entry we found it bright, clean and airy with mostly young serving staff. Service is courteous but a bit haphazard; a tad of training from good management would help here. We saw outside seating contained within a walled area off the main inside dining area probably designed more for smokers and a necessity for Wu flu. We opted to sit in warm sun as we don't often get warm sun in these parts and as importantly there were no smokers (who can be selfish to smoke while others eat around them.) Four of us dined with three opting for the Fairways club poached chicken fillet, crisp streaky bacon, lettuce, tomato on toasted sourdough with fries and fixings including ketchup, factory made mayo with fresh garlic added, that improved taste, and French mustard. Imagine not having Colman's English mustard. The club & fries was €14. I opted for the seafood chowder (€11). It came with one thin piece of soda bread - the bread portion and the quality disappointed. The chowder was good but while Fitzpatricks pub chowder is an extra euro it's way way far better and shell less. I asked for white pepper to be told they didn't have any. What I found most bothersome about the chowder was that mussels within were still in shells so I had to use my hands to negotiate the meat out, leaving me with fishy fingers; pieces of salmon had skin on too. Crispy salmon skin can be tasty, but soggy limp skin is repulsive. While skin and shell help make great stock they shouldn't be in the served dish. If the chef insists on skin and shell then provide a water bowl, hand towel and suitable cutlery. All in all it's a good 3 star but could easily hit at least 4 star. I mean no white pepper, no English mustard, hard shells and soggy skin in soup, no. We went across the way to Costa for coffees.
