Yesterday was a sad, sad day. A milestone in my dining…read moreexperiences. I still have not gotten over the shock of the whole thing.... ????? I WAS UNABLE TO FINISH MY MEAL HERE. Why, I hear you cry, poor food? Nope. Cold dinner? Nope. A bug in my spuds? Nope. You will never guess.... The portions were just too enormous even for a large bellied hippopotamus like me, actually I think the whole thing was a trick of some kind, conjuring gone haywire?? Maybe a fairytale like the magic porridge pot that kept overflowing with porridge...well the spuds just kept on coming, never in my greedy piggy wiggy life did I leave such a size of spuds left on my plate. Sob. Is it all over for me? Have I turned into one of those people who say 'Oh I just eat 2 squares of chocolate at a time'......2 SQUARES?? Feckin lunatics. This was a great dining experience, you had to wait just the right amount of time so you know the food if cooked fresh and it arrived in all its humongous glory well presented, hot and delicious. I had the salmon with champ, carrot and parsnip mash with garlic buttered prawns, very tasty indeed. The boss opted for the Downshire burger (half a cow) and chips with a massive pile of salad on the side. Phew! It was well worth the visit. The other BIG plus in my book is a clean bathroom, and this place had the wonderful aroma of mild bleach as soon as you open the bathroom door, this cannot be beaten in my book in public restrooms, cleanliness is next to Godliness my mum used to say (usually when scrubbing my two dirty paws with carbolic soap) A great spot for a meal, centrally located on the main Street in Banbridge and free parking behind.

The room rates were reasonable - i think it was about £80 per room. The bar and night club part of this hotel are very popular with the older 20 -30 year olds in this area. The nightclub is free entry before 11. The bar prices are reasonable and not really too different from anywhere else in the town. There are rarely special offers on alcohol. The food is also lovely, however the last time i had food here was about 2 years ago. Would recommend for a night out.

And events at the hotel can be loud when you're looking for some peace and quiet in Dundalk. Breakfast was included with our room but it wasn't very impressive - some fried eggs gone cold on a buffet, limited healthy choices otherwise. Unfortunately, I had some bad luck when it came to my stay. When my plug adapter went missing, the hotel provided one. However, it didn't work. By the time I figured that out, it was too late at night to roll down to reception for another one so I just made do. A wedding at the event space meant that drunk partygoers were roaming the hotel grounds, singing and yelling, until the wee hours of the morning. Although I had booked a non-smoking room, and although I was thrilled that the window and balcony door could be opened to let in fresh air, my neighbor decided to smoke on his balcony (continuously) until 3 am. In a desperate attempt for sleep, I called the front desk. Once, the call rang without answer. And on the second try, they hung up on me. Great service and help, guys. I probably wouldn't stay here again.

The bathroom alone is larger than most rooms-particularly my last room in the UK. The gym was decently equipped and there is a wonderful heated indoor pool, with a jacuzzi and sauna. It would be nice if there were access to sound on the TV in the gym. I arrived after 11:00 pm and the front desk was there and ready to check me in. It only took a few minutes. I passed by a very lively bar area that goes until midnight I'm told. About to try the food. Breakfast was buffet style but everything replenished regularly and very fresh and delicious. Freshly fried eggs available how you like them. I have to mention that with all the positives, a couple of caveats. There is a golf course and working farms in the area. I was awakened each morning quite early by noises from surrounding properties. Lastly, I had the Di Not Disturb sign in my door but housekeeping went in anyway. I was told that calls to the room were made, a manager was notified and a supervisor accompanied the cleaning person. I was told this was policy. So, lesson learned. Let the hotel know in advance that you will not want room to be serviced.

It didn't matter how many questions we asked or how many times we bothered them , they always responded kindly and professionally. The food was quite good, but another £1 has been added to the cost (now £12) for a main course - probably to cover for the extra costs arising from Covid - and at £4.20 for a pint of Guinness and the VAT relief until January next - they might do well but price hikes are risky as customers may feel sore. A second lock down though would be disastrous. I hope now with Covid that the owners will very soon find a plumber to re - introduce hot water in the wash rooms and find an electrician to turn up the heat on the air hand driers. They might even have a word with the lady who dishes out the vegetables to be a little less mean with the portions, particularly with another quid being eked out as she's been tight fisted for a very long time now as I recall noting this in a review a year or more ago. The service was ace especially the staff who tend the tables they are all really a brilliant bunch. The servers make it 5 star, the food quality is three star, the extra £1 hasn't brought about any higher quality and the vegetable portions are two star so about 4 star on balance.

This was all following Storm Éowyn. To clarify, my partner's children would all be neurospicy like her and myself (she's Autistic and I've got cPTSD and ADHD). Her eldest son is Autistic and would be slightly more profound than the rest of us. I initially had a poor interaction with a girl in the restaurant. She was incredibly rude for no reason. Following that, I approached the reception to give feedback on their staff and politely complain. Before I could even explain anything, an overbearing voice from beside me started asserting that the hotel staff were all doing their best etc. I explained that none of that was really what was in question. I wanted to tell them that I'd had a very rude experience. This offensive gentleman got right up in my face in an extremely threatening manner. I was extremely surprised to discover the gentleman was nom other than the MD of the hotel. His completely casual attire and overall manner, should have given a clear indicator of the unprofessional approach I would experience. What resulted was an initial exchange between Fank and I, followed by an exchange between Frank and my partner. The contents of which were Frank detailing how Autistic children should be put in care and he would ring Tulsa about her child. When the hotel MD said this we left immediately. Unfortunately, this took us about thirty minutes as my partner's son had an autistic meltdown over the incident.

This led me to The Avoca Hotel. They had one room left and it was 'basic' which is their terminology for a single room with an in room sink and a shared bathroom. Although this sounds a little but grim it was anything but - The Avoca isn't the most aesthetically pleasing hotel in the world, and the exterior could definitely do with a lick of paint, but it does it's job nicely. The reception staff are excellent - friendly and accommodating even when rushed off their feet. The Avoca is a bit of a maze inside so make sure you listen to the receptionist when they are directing you to your room. The rooms are 'basic' but as I was told this when booking I was not shocked - I was actually quite impressed with what was on offer for such a minimal price. Rooms come equipped with a sink, tea and coffee making facilities and mine came with a beautiful sea view that would rival views at the 5 star hotel up the road. The Guest information books says that you must pay for wifi but when I asked at reception they gave me the password without charge. You can opt to have breakfast included in your package, which I would highly recommend. I was served with a full fry up, 4 slices of toast, orange juice and a pot of coffee. Overall I can't say a bad word about the Avoca Hotel - although, as mentioned, the building and facilities could do with a face lift their customer service has stood the test of time and this makes all the difference.

The blinds did not block the street lights. The carpeting turned our socks brown. Also, I'm not entirely convinced the sheets were clean. I consider our stay here a waste of £99, and I will urge others to avoid the premises, even though the one employee running the bar, restaurant, and hotel reception was a very nice person.
