We had booked 3 twin rooms and were pleased to be shown to 3 rooms right next to each other. The rooms were a good size and each had a double and a single bed. We settled in before heading down to the leisure club. There, we went into the 12-metre swimming pool, the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. We didn't try the spa but treatments include massages, scrubs and facials. That night we headed to the hotel restaurant where we selected our four courses. I went for the ravioli to start, the chicken/chorizo main served with champ, cheesecake for dessert and a cup of tea to finish. We were advised the cheesecake was caramel and chocolate, but when it came it was mixed berry. When we asked, we were advised they had run out of the caramel cheesecake and were very apologetic that we hadn't been informed. They even offered us a second dessert- so very good service. After dinner we stayed on and enjoy a few drinks while watching the residents and locals jive the night away to the live music! A good bit of old-fashioned craic! (I think that's the joy of the Burrendale- it's a homely and comfortable hotel, rather than being "show-offy".) It was a lovely break and we all enjoyed our time away! The place was really peaceful and my New York State of mind was completely gone, although temporarily. I really felt like a little kid when I went on to explore the different rooms in the castle. The furnishings and designs are things you would expect to see in films. My favorite rooms were probably the Bottlery (wine room) and The Buttery (the kitchen). Their castle dog, Ri, was super adorable and roamed around as if he owns the place. Some castles can feel intimidating but this place felt very intimate and homey. If only I could live there forever....

It is small with only 15 or so rooms, though you would never think to look at it. The Millbrook was easily able to cater for over 100 people who were at the wedding. It is close enough to Belfast to suit most people, but far enough away to have a country vibe. The room itself was clean and comfortable and the staff were more than happy to let us have a late check out. My only complaint would be the staff at the breakfast who were less than helpful. We had to be asked twice in the half and hour that waited on breakfast what we had actually ordered. The staff forgot about us and served several other couples first. When I brought this to their attention there was not so much as an apology. Never the less, the cooked breakfast that we ordered finally arrived and it was fine.

This was all following Storm Éowyn. To clarify, my partner's children would all be neurospicy like her and myself (she's Autistic and I've got cPTSD and ADHD). Her eldest son is Autistic and would be slightly more profound than the rest of us. I initially had a poor interaction with a girl in the restaurant. She was incredibly rude for no reason. Following that, I approached the reception to give feedback on their staff and politely complain. Before I could even explain anything, an overbearing voice from beside me started asserting that the hotel staff were all doing their best etc. I explained that none of that was really what was in question. I wanted to tell them that I'd had a very rude experience. This offensive gentleman got right up in my face in an extremely threatening manner. I was extremely surprised to discover the gentleman was nom other than the MD of the hotel. His completely casual attire and overall manner, should have given a clear indicator of the unprofessional approach I would experience. What resulted was an initial exchange between Fank and I, followed by an exchange between Frank and my partner. The contents of which were Frank detailing how Autistic children should be put in care and he would ring Tulsa about her child. When the hotel MD said this we left immediately. Unfortunately, this took us about thirty minutes as my partner's son had an autistic meltdown over the incident.
