After much faffing about I finally got round to booking a hotel in Newcaste County Down for my…read morefriends wedding - the only problem was that due to my faffing hotel rooms in the seaside town were few and far between. This led me to The Avoca Hotel. They had one room left and it was 'basic' which is their terminology for a single room with an in room sink and a shared bathroom. Although this sounds a little but grim it was anything but - The Avoca isn't the most aesthetically pleasing hotel in the world, and the exterior could definitely do with a lick of paint, but it does it's job nicely. The reception staff are excellent - friendly and accommodating even when rushed off their feet. The Avoca is a bit of a maze inside so make sure you listen to the receptionist when they are directing you to your room. The rooms are 'basic' but as I was told this when booking I was not shocked - I was actually quite impressed with what was on offer for such a minimal price. Rooms come equipped with a sink, tea and coffee making facilities and mine came with a beautiful sea view that would rival views at the 5 star hotel up the road. The Guest information books says that you must pay for wifi but when I asked at reception they gave me the password without charge. You can opt to have breakfast included in your package, which I would highly recommend. I was served with a full fry up, 4 slices of toast, orange juice and a pot of coffee. Overall I can't say a bad word about the Avoca Hotel - although, as mentioned, the building and facilities could do with a face lift their customer service has stood the test of time and this makes all the difference.

The blinds did not block the street lights. The carpeting turned our socks brown. Also, I'm not entirely convinced the sheets were clean. The "en suite" bath facilities were old, dirty, and in need of caulking. Overall, we highly considered leaving in the middle of the night, but being from the US, we had no idea where we would go. I consider our stay here a waste of £99, and I will urge others to avoid the premises, even though the one employee running the bar, restaurant, and hotel reception was a very nice person.

And Bellingham Castle was the chosen venue and boy it exceeded all expectations. I even got to stay here for one night and they had such a pleasant hospitality. We ended up getting the "Kevin" room, which had a balcony view of the garden and patches of greenery that stretched as far as the eye could see. The place was really peaceful and my New York State of mind was completely gone, although temporarily. I really felt like a little kid when I went on to explore the different rooms in the castle. The furnishings and designs are things you would expect to see in films. My favorite rooms were probably the Bottlery (wine room) and The Buttery (the kitchen). Their castle dog, Ri, was super adorable and roamed around as if he owns the place. Some castles can feel intimidating but this place felt very intimate and homey. If only I could live there forever....

We had booked 3 twin rooms and were pleased to be shown to 3 rooms right next to each other. The rooms were a good size and each had a double and a single bed. We settled in before heading down to the leisure club. There, we went into the 12-metre swimming pool, the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. We didn't try the spa but treatments include massages, scrubs and facials. That night we headed to the hotel restaurant where we selected our four courses. I went for the ravioli to start, the chicken/chorizo main served with champ, cheesecake for dessert and a cup of tea to finish. We were advised the cheesecake was caramel and chocolate, but when it came it was mixed berry. When we asked, we were advised they had run out of the caramel cheesecake and were very apologetic that we hadn't been informed. They even offered us a second dessert- so very good service. After dinner we stayed on and enjoy a few drinks while watching the residents and locals jive the night away to the live music! A good bit of old-fashioned craic! (I think that's the joy of the Burrendale- it's a homely and comfortable hotel, rather than being "show-offy".) It was a lovely break and we all enjoyed our time away! It's only an hour outside Belfast but felt like we were getting away somewhere further!

Why, I hear you cry, poor food? Nope. Cold dinner? Nope. A bug in my spuds? Nope. You will never guess.... Maybe a fairytale like the magic porridge pot that kept overflowing with porridge...well the spuds just kept on coming, never in my greedy piggy wiggy life did I leave such a size of spuds left on my plate. Sob. Is it all over for me? Have I turned into one of those people who say 'Oh I just eat 2 squares of chocolate at a time'......2 SQUARES?? Feckin lunatics. This was a great dining experience, you had to wait just the right amount of time so you know the food if cooked fresh and it arrived in all its humongous glory well presented, hot and delicious. I had the salmon with champ, carrot and parsnip mash with garlic buttered prawns, very tasty indeed. The boss opted for the Downshire burger (half a cow) and chips with a massive pile of salad on the side. Phew! It was well worth the visit. The other BIG plus in my book is a clean bathroom, and this place had the wonderful aroma of mild bleach as soon as you open the bathroom door, this cannot be beaten in my book in public restrooms, cleanliness is next to Godliness my mum used to say (usually when scrubbing my two dirty paws with carbolic soap) A great spot for a meal, centrally located on the main Street in Banbridge and free parking behind.

This was all following Storm Éowyn. To clarify, my partner's children would all be neurospicy like her and myself (she's Autistic and I've got cPTSD and ADHD). Her eldest son is Autistic and would be slightly more profound than the rest of us. I initially had a poor interaction with a girl in the restaurant. She was incredibly rude for no reason. Following that, I approached the reception to give feedback on their staff and politely complain. Before I could even explain anything, an overbearing voice from beside me started asserting that the hotel staff were all doing their best etc. I explained that none of that was really what was in question. I wanted to tell them that I'd had a very rude experience. This offensive gentleman got right up in my face in an extremely threatening manner. I was extremely surprised to discover the gentleman was nom other than the MD of the hotel. His completely casual attire and overall manner, should have given a clear indicator of the unprofessional approach I would experience. What resulted was an initial exchange between Fank and I, followed by an exchange between Frank and my partner. The contents of which were Frank detailing how Autistic children should be put in care and he would ring Tulsa about her child. When the hotel MD said this we left immediately. Unfortunately, this took us about thirty minutes as my partner's son had an autistic meltdown over the incident.

The menu is the same for both places. I had the seabass which was cooked very well and top marks for presentation. It was pretty, I like pretty. However couldn't say the same for the burger, the cheese on top looked and tasted like it had been double deep fried and most definitely wasnt pretty. It is close enough to Belfast to suit most people, but far enough away to have a country vibe. The room itself was clean and comfortable and the staff were more than happy to let us have a late check out. My only complaint would be the staff at the breakfast who were less than helpful. We had to be asked twice in the half and hour that waited on breakfast what we had actually ordered. The staff forgot about us and served several other couples first. When I brought this to their attention there was not so much as an apology. Never the less, the cooked breakfast that we ordered finally arrived and it was fine.

Unfortunately, I had some bad luck when it came to my stay. When my plug adapter went missing, the hotel provided one. However, it didn't work. By the time I figured that out, it was too late at night to roll down to reception for another one so I just made do. A wedding at the event space meant that drunk partygoers were roaming the hotel grounds, singing and yelling, until the wee hours of the morning. Freshly fried eggs available how you like them. I have to mention that with all the positives, a couple of caveats. There is a golf course and working farms in the area. I was awakened each morning quite early by noises from surrounding properties. Lastly, I had the Di Not Disturb sign in my door but housekeeping went in anyway.
