Yesterday was a sad, sad day. A milestone in my dining…read moreexperiences. I still have not gotten over the shock of the whole thing.... ????? I WAS UNABLE TO FINISH MY MEAL HERE. Why, I hear you cry, poor food? Nope. Cold dinner? Nope. A bug in my spuds? Nope. You will never guess.... The portions were just too enormous even for a large bellied hippopotamus like me, actually I think the whole thing was a trick of some kind, conjuring gone haywire?? Maybe a fairytale like the magic porridge pot that kept overflowing with porridge...well the spuds just kept on coming, never in my greedy piggy wiggy life did I leave such a size of spuds left on my plate. Sob. Is it all over for me? Have I turned into one of those people who say 'Oh I just eat 2 squares of chocolate at a time'......2 SQUARES?? Feckin lunatics. This was a great dining experience, you had to wait just the right amount of time so you know the food if cooked fresh and it arrived in all its humongous glory well presented, hot and delicious. I had the salmon with champ, carrot and parsnip mash with garlic buttered prawns, very tasty indeed. The boss opted for the Downshire burger (half a cow) and chips with a massive pile of salad on the side. Phew! It was well worth the visit. The other BIG plus in my book is a clean bathroom, and this place had the wonderful aroma of mild bleach as soon as you open the bathroom door, this cannot be beaten in my book in public restrooms, cleanliness is next to Godliness my mum used to say (usually when scrubbing my two dirty paws with carbolic soap) A great spot for a meal, centrally located on the main Street in Banbridge and free parking behind.

The room rates were reasonable - i think it was about £80 per room. The bar and night club part of this hotel are very popular with the older 20 -30 year olds in this area. The nightclub is free entry before 11. The bar prices are reasonable and not really too different from anywhere else in the town. There are rarely special offers on alcohol. The food is also lovely, however the last time i had food here was about 2 years ago. Would recommend for a night out.

I stayed at the Charlemont for ten days in July 2017. I don't think in all the times I have stayed…read moreat a hotel that I have ever felt so welcomed or been so well-fed. The family that runs the hotel treats you like you are a guest in their home; incredibly accommodating with everything from food - I'm vegetarian and others had gluten allergies, to a staff member who used her own phone to call the taxi company I used in Belfast to get my sunglasses back. The beds and pillows were so comfortable and the room and the bathroom were very large. The food was unbelievably fresh. So much of what you get in the states is processed, but here everything is locally sourced. It's amazing that we didn't gain weight. But then people walk everywhere and the Charlemont is centrally located. I loved it there and wouldn't stay anywhere else when I go back to Armagh.

The menu is possibly a tad old fashioned however I've always enjoyed any meal I've had here. The nachos, garlic mushrooms and garlic potatoes are delicious if you just want a snack or a few bowls of food to share with friends over drinks. I'm also always impressed with their wine - having tried glasses of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio I've found it always excellent quality, which isn't the case with a lot of hotel bars. However if you visit Charlemont you really should try their downstairs Turners Bistro restaurant which is very different to the rest of the hotel. It's much more modern in atmosphere and serves scrumptious food which is 5 star quality. I've eaten in it a few times and always love it - they do an awesome vegetable crumble and the wine selection is great. A highlight is the Gourmet Night - I have been to one (Italian themed - however each night is themed differently) but do plan to go to many more as I had the most amazing night. Five courses of truly outstanding food and accompanying wines - absolutely scrumptious. A beautiful night (very reasonably priced) and the service was impeccable. Better food than I've had in many other cities around the world. Can't praise this place enough - the people of Armagh are extremely lucky to have this gem of a restaurant! So in fairness I'd probably rate Charlemont Hotel a 4 but Turners Bistro is a definite 5 stars for me.

I really think this hotel should be better than it is. I also think that it isn't a big ask to…read moreexpect it to be much better either. It's been many years since we've been here because we found the food fairly poor. We had no reason to go back until we booked massages in the rented out spa there via a Groupon deal. We arrived early so we decided to have coffee. I wouldn't order food. So I ordered a flat white and a cappuccino (£4.80) and I say with certainty that what I had served up was not a flat white. Not even close. It was poor tasting too. This is what I mean about my recall of my experience in this place time and again. I was hoping for a great tasting coffee. I had paid for a great tasting coffee. I wanted to be impressed but yet again they really just confirmed my old memory offering the least effort, with little attention to detail yet the maximum charge. The service was haphazard and somewhat slow. I wasn't offered a loyalty card despite them sitting on the counter. Mind you this place is open a long time and the reception area was full of customers so they aren't short of trade. Maybe that's why they are complacent. Finally as my iPhone was near out of power I asked at reception for the loan of a charger. I explained that we were there for massages and would be there at least two hours. The friendly receptionist said she had just one so I had to leave my phone at reception to be charged; it was like handing over a limb. I didn't want to do it but if I hadn't done so I'd be left with a phone with no power. Not surprisingly we are very unlikely to return at all.
