We drive back following the Mourne Coastal Route and wanted something nicer than just standing at a chipper. We saw the front of the hotel and decided to circle back and give it a shot. The hotel is literally just opposite the water and not far at all from Warrenpoint town centre. There was a wedding taking place and most of the hotel was just loud and busy but still, we headed up to the restaurant and SO glad we did! Despite a bit of confusion on arrival of where to go to be seated or if we could be seated, a few different waitresses eventually circled through and took our drinks and food orders, brought out everything while we sipped through ciders and kiddie-friendly bevvies, and enjoyed both the company, the decor, and the vibe. The food when it arrived was awesome. We sampled everything we ordered and honestly, not a single complaint - we shared through a chunky tasty bird-and-beef burger, pizza, spicy chicken curry, garlic bread, steamed fish and veggies and barbecue ribs. All of it was terrific - none of that greasy tasting feeling after - food was amazing and I actually was very impressed. It really did cap off our day trip quite nicely and I'm looking forward to maybe check-in sometime for a weekend and give it a whirl as well.

Most of my stays have been at the Whistledown and I've never had a negative thought about the place. The beds are comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurants (there are two and a pub) are great. In fact the last several times I was there I ate dinner there each night (my stays are usually a week at a time). The hotel itself looks great. They still had some of the holiday decorations up, so it had a little bit of extra cheer this time around. I do know that the place is big for weddings now, so make sure you get your reservations as far out as you can manage. Oh...and you can't beat the view when you walk out of the front door. Carlingford Lough is right outside and you can look across to the Republic and the beautiful mountains there.

I'm not going to add any photos either as the previous ones are gone too. I'm sure readers will agree that it's just not good enough as we give freely of our time to write reviews as knowledge which isn't shared is lost knowledge. This was all following Storm Éowyn. To clarify, my partner's children would all be neurospicy like her and myself (she's Autistic and I've got cPTSD and ADHD). Her eldest son is Autistic and would be slightly more profound than the rest of us. I initially had a poor interaction with a girl in the restaurant. She was incredibly rude for no reason. Following that, I approached the reception to give feedback on their staff and politely complain. Before I could even explain anything, an overbearing voice from beside me started asserting that the hotel staff were all doing their best etc. I explained that none of that was really what was in question. I wanted to tell them that I'd had a very rude experience. This offensive gentleman got right up in my face in an extremely threatening manner. I was extremely surprised to discover the gentleman was nom other than the MD of the hotel. His completely casual attire and overall manner, should have given a clear indicator of the unprofessional approach I would experience. What resulted was an initial exchange between Fank and I, followed by an exchange between Frank and my partner. The contents of which were Frank detailing how Autistic children should be put in care and he would ring Tulsa about her child. When the hotel MD said this we left immediately. Unfortunately, this took us about thirty minutes as my partner's son had an autistic meltdown over the incident.

Unfortunately, I had some bad luck when it came to my stay. When my plug adapter went missing, the hotel provided one. However, it didn't work. By the time I figured that out, it was too late at night to roll down to reception for another one so I just made do. A wedding at the event space meant that drunk partygoers were roaming the hotel grounds, singing and yelling, until the wee hours of the morning. Although I had booked a non-smoking room, and although I was thrilled that the window and balcony door could be opened to let in fresh air, my neighbor decided to smoke on his balcony (continuously) until 3 am. In a desperate attempt for sleep, I called the front desk. Once, the call rang without answer. And on the second try, they hung up on me. Great service and help, guys. I probably wouldn't stay here again.

The bathroom alone is larger than most rooms-particularly my last room in the UK. The gym was decently equipped and there is a wonderful heated indoor pool, with a jacuzzi and sauna. It would be nice if there were access to sound on the TV in the gym. I arrived after 11:00 pm and the front desk was there and ready to check me in. It only took a few minutes. I passed by a very lively bar area that goes until midnight I'm told. About to try the food. Breakfast was buffet style but everything replenished regularly and very fresh and delicious. Freshly fried eggs available how you like them. I have to mention that with all the positives, a couple of caveats. There is a golf course and working farms in the area. I was awakened each morning quite early by noises from surrounding properties. Lastly, I had the Di Not Disturb sign in my door but housekeeping went in anyway. I was told that calls to the room were made, a manager was notified and a supervisor accompanied the cleaning person. I was told this was policy. So, lesson learned. Let the hotel know in advance that you will not want room to be serviced.

The place was really peaceful and my New York State of mind was completely gone, although temporarily. I really felt like a little kid when I went on to explore the different rooms in the castle. The furnishings and designs are things you would expect to see in films. My favorite rooms were probably the Bottlery (wine room) and The Buttery (the kitchen). Their castle dog, Ri, was super adorable and roamed around as if he owns the place. Some castles can feel intimidating but this place felt very intimate and homey. If only I could live there forever....
