It was a sunny day when we arrived and left, and this place just looks stunning bathed in warm sunshine. There was a waft of light breeze as we walked in, an autumnal windy whisper from our mother the earth. We've probably been here for Sunday lunch at least seven or eight times this year already. The Sunday lunch is very tasty and offers a pretty darn good food selection too. The lunch price increased a while back from €22.50 to €24.50 for all three courses of the Sunday lunch menu, including tea or coffee. Alternatively the food items are individually priced with starters like soup: usually vegetable and one other - today was spicy parsnip; seafood cocktail with a salad, Parmesan bacon, crouton & Caesar salad or stuffed vol - a - vent (French for windblown) all €5.5; mains like turkey & ham, southern fried chicken breast, cod, salmon, beef, and all €13.5 and desserts like apple pie, pavlova, Eton mess, sherry trifle all €5.5. Tea/coffee €2.5. I had the Parmesan bacon & Caesar salad today with the southern fried chicken for main. The main included mashed and roast potato, mostly root vegetables with some sugar snap peas on the side and a pot of really peppery pepper sauce. Almost all the food was first rate, my southern spiced chicken and scrummy pepper sauce didn't just tickle my tastebuds rather it was a full scale assault, but I was a tad disappointed with most of the bacon served in the starter as it wasn't crispy, instead much of the bacon rind was sadly soft and not crisp so it remained on the plate. I'm not marking them down for this in this review and it's easily remedied. The pavlova dessert I chose was tasty too. All of our party were pleased with what we had served up. We were told that they had also made eclairs, which weren't on the menu, but we stuck with the pavlova and Eton mess desserts so maybe next time. There was a wedding party enjoying their day too, so the staff were under a bit of pressure and this understandably caused the service to be a bit slower than usual, but it's a genuinely cosy relaxing and unpretentious bustling venue with lots going on, so we just relaxed. No doubt there was chaos in the kitchens. Good food and good company, great after lunch coffee all surrounded by lush ancient countryside, I mean what's not to like? read more
