The Galley is a quaint little spot on Old Metairie Road with reasonable prices and generous portion sizes. The menu is extensive, with specials offered regularly, so there's always something new to try. We started with the chargrilled oysters and crawfish hush puppies with cream sauce both were flavorful and a great way to begin the meal. For dinner, we ordered the stuffed shrimp jalapeños, potatoes, and grilled fish over pasta. Everything was well-seasoned and satisfying. I also had a lemon drop martini, which was nicely balanced and strong. Service was quick and attentive. What can I the galley is always good. It's a little on the pricey side so I guess it should be good but definitely fresh crispy delicious hitting all the right spots. After waiting for almost an hour, the service was so slow, we had to get our food to go. When part of our order was missing, the staff tried to argue that they had brought it out to us. I had already paid, so I said to take the item off the bill and keep that money as the tip. After being accused of trying to steal an order of hush puppies, I was ready to go. Disclaimer: I tried to be fair about this review knowing my politics are not in line with what was displayed at this restaurant. However, it's possible I'm still biased, despite my efforts, so I implore you to make your own decisions about this spot! This was a smaller, but busy restaurant known for their seafood. It was a random weeknight, but it was pretty full. The decorations inside were fun and campy with lots of fishing related décor! Feels like a cute family-owned restaurant... except for all of the Trump supporter paraphernalia sitting around on the front counter. Trump has been out of office for about a year, and we're in New Orleans (a pretty liberal city). Come on... It's unnecessary to have political alignments displayed at a restaurant, and it makes people feel unwelcome. Lost a star from me walking in, but we decided to give this place a try anyway. The waitress that served us was friendly and helpful! She told us that they were known for their soft shelled crabs, so we tried a soft shelled crab plate which came with 2 crabs, a side of mac and cheese, and a small side salad ($38). Since it's crab, it can get a little pricy depending on the market, but even then, I thought the plate was overpriced for what it was. (As another point of reference, the soft shelled crab po-boy was about $25.) However, the portion for the plate was fair, and you won't leave hungry! The crabs themselves were seasoned well and fried. They were good, yummy, but nothing unexpected or outstanding for the price. The mac and cheese was a little bland in my opinion, and the salad was a typical romaine. We also ordered a chicken parmesan ($18). Again, the portion was fair and you won't leave hungry. The chicken was flavorful and fried to a crisp, topped with cheese and sitting on a bed of spaghetti and tomato sauce. Delicious! Just the way I like it! No complaints about this one in terms of taste! Just again, the price is a little much for what it is. I usually get the same quality and portion at a restaurant in Lakeview for $5 less. The thing made me decide to take another star off this review was that they brought us bottled water when we wanted to drink water and charged us $2 per bottle. Why the unnecessary plastic waste? Why nickel and dime your customers for water? One thing that did impress me about this place was the bathroom. This place has wonderful warm, friendly family like service. The restaurant is spotless and the old warm charm oozes from its pores. Is it fancy or anything more than it pretends to be, no. Is it an old school seafood house near New Orleans, yes. I don't eat seafood, but the few other items they had were fantastic. And clearly the seafood they do serve is fresh off the boat because when you walk into this place, there isn't any fishy smell of any kind; I'm not quite sure how a seafood house can be so clean and the air so pure! The chicken parm was a delight. Definitely encourage anyone who isn't into seafood to enjoy it. The apps were large and inviting and tasty. All in all, this is a winner. I almost didn't come here because of the reviews but I'm glad I did because my meal and service were bomb-diggity. I had crawfish. They had an advertisement in a local free paper and it said "our crawfish are huge" and they weren't lying. And they were cooked to perfection. It was hot but not too hot. And none of them were mushy but somehow the shells weren't too hard either. Then I ordered the duck fingers. This is fried duck that looks like chicken fingers. But they know how to cook duck and they weren't fatty, it comes with a honey-mustard sauce and it was good. I also got ranch. I think I'd prefer a teriyaki sauce but you know, I'm a crazy foodie. I have wanted to come here for years because I've taken pilates next door for over five years. Today I smelled the crawfish and tried to treat myself as part of my birthday celebration. I have many regrets. I walked in and there was no sign whether to seat yourself and no one at the counter. I waited several minutes and no one greeted or sat me so I asked another customer also waiting if I was supposed to sit, she said yes. I picked what I thought was the smallest table since I was alone, a 4 top. There were several 4 tops open, over 6. It's still 11:30 so the lunch crowd is trickling in but it wasn't packed, possibly 50 percent full. Immediately someone comes and asks if I'm alone and I say yes and she says she has to move me because it's Friday. She puts me at a two top which is not only in a separate dark back room which is twenty degrees colder but empty and also right next to a busy service entrance. It's hard enough to eat alone in a restaurant without being put literally in a dark corner. I ordered my food to go and when they asked why I told them it was because I felt uncomfortable. They then tried to argue with me for five minutes about staying which made me feel even more uncomfortable. The two stars is because the order did come out quickly otherwise it would have been one. The saddest thing is my bill would have been more than a four top with all I wanted to try and I always tip 25 percent. Don't judge someone based on appearances. Also If you want guests to sit, somewhere, specific, and table management is important to you, then have a hostess. Or the very least someone at the door to greet someone, or at the very very least a sign to tell you to wait, and that someone will be with you shortly. The crab and spinach soup was great, another reason for the two stars but $40 plus tip was NOT worth it for 3 lbs of crawfish and a soup. From the time we sat down and ordered it took 1 hour to get our food. The boiled and fried seafood here ranges between a three and four star experience.  This place is also famous for being the folks that bring you the soft shell crab po boy during Jazz Fest.  The ambiance is pretty plain and standard Metry dive joint with the service being friendly and attentive typically except when it gets really crowded which is often. The thing that knocks many people for a loop here are the prices and it is expensive to eat here typically.  As an example during a recent lunch visit I got the seafood platter with a soft shell crab, seafood gumbo and iced tea which resulted in my bill being in the range of a fine dining experience.  That is quite a chunk of change compared to the prices at most other seafood joints in the city where you could've engaged in some substantial alcohol consumption before getting your tab anywhere near that.  Now I will say the seafood platter is plenty of food for at least two people to eat and many other places have kept their prices lower but greatly reduced the quantity of their food.  The one item that I'm really not a fan of here are their crawfish pies which are tiny little things without a lot of stuff inside. As a general rule you will often find a bit of sticker shock for many items here and can often get comparable food at better prices at many other places.   Overall the fried and boiled options are usually always done well and if you're willing to put up with the premium pricing and often crowded environment you can satisfy most of your seafood cravings here. This is also about the only seafood option like this on Metairie Road and they have a lot of fans from the nearby neighborhoods. As a lifelong resident of New Orleans I have eaten seafood all my life. Literally forced to eat raw oysters when I was little and haven't looked back. Now I love any seafood I can get my hands on. So came here with friends for my birthday last month. Never been here before. We were seated in the patio area. Our server was friendly and personable and took our orders. When the food arrived it was hit and miss for us. Some of our dishes looked delicious and portions were good. Other dishes were not up to par (snowcrab legs were about $38 for three clusters). Most any New Orleanian can eat 6-8 clusters at one time. They don't expect most customers to get two orders of snowcrab legs at those prices do they? My other friend ordered a seafood platter which came with 1 catfish filet, maybe 6 shrimp, 6 oysters, and onion rings. For $45 she was very disappointed in the small portions of the seafood platter. Our server and the other server who was helping him were both wonderful. We truly enjoyed the service. read more

I ordered the "House Pinot Grigio" -- which is on the menu at $6.99. The check came with it at $13.99. The owner, apparently known to Yelpers for sketchy tactics, said they were out of the House so what I received was from a nicer bottle. She implied I shouldn't complain about an upgrade. I said the server did not inform me of the change nor ask if I wanted it at 2x the price. The owner didnt apologize, and just agreed to charge $9.99. I said that still isnt the menu price. She said "the new menus havent come in yet"--which apparently was a line used months ago on someone else. And "market price" for grilled redfish? $38.99. Honey, this ain't fine dining. The napkins are paper and in a box on the table. You can find seafood anywhere in this town--don't support businesses that are blatantly unethical and disrepectful to their customers. read more

I visit New Orleans quite often and I passed by this restaurant and thought it looked cute so I decided to Google it. The reviews were great. We had dinner there last night. It was extremely busy when we arrived so it did take a while to get a server, which is understandable.The food was great. The service was great. We ordered a half pound of shrimp to go and when I got home and opened it there were seven shrimp that were quite small. It felt very light to me so I put it on my kitchen scale and it was 4 ounces. I called the following day and spoke to who I believe is the owner and she told me it is sold by the portion. She said normally seven pieces of shrimp is about $19.99. She informed me this is what was sold as a "portion." All the while, crawfish are sold by the pound. These were what I would deem to be 21 to 25 count per pound shrimp. She continued to argue with me the fact that these are headless expensive shrimp. This is the same shrimp I can buy in the store for $14 a pound. At this point it's not hearing about the price. It's about the fact that she decided she wanted to lose a customer because she wanted to argue. Doesn't anyone understand good business? We spent approx. $160 for 2 people. What a HORRIBLE experience. Went with Jefferson Parish Council on Aging. Called prior to visit and was told we could get separate checks. When ordering, we asked for separate checks. After the meal the very rude waitress broke the bill down for us. She added a $10 tip to my $21 meal. When everyone questioned her about our bills she was very ugly and insisted that was the tax and tip. Will never go there again. We all felt we had been cheated. We had had a lovely field trip prior and this bad expeience just put a damper on the day. My tip to anyone going there: Check your bill. Went to check this place for a dinner. I had their seafood dinner with softshell crab which was priced about $38. It came with two soft shell crab, a side and salad. The softshell was well seasoned and cooked properly but it wasn't anything spectacular. I would give 3/5 because for the price was expecting something better. I had macaroni and cheese plus salad which were as usual. The only point off for me was this place would give bottled water which seems to be a plastic problem for me than the cost. I went to this place after hearing ads in the radio, the food is good -a little above average, another point off was a little bit congested space but my experience was overall positive. read more

Just had quite the experience here. Walked in for some good, hot crawfish for lunch. When the waitress came to my table, who looked bothered to even be there, asked what I want. I asked her if the crawfish hot and fresh? Not really expecting a response other than "yes"...she says "no, we boiled them yesterday but I'll wam them up for you." Being a local,that's pretty much a sin. I asked how much? Her response..$11.00/lb! Wtf! 11 bucks a pound for yesterdays crawfish that have been sitting out?! NO THANK YOU. I ordered a gumbo while looking over what to order on the menu. I don't know who they fooling with those prices, but,$26 for a shrimp salad and a $24 for a shrimp po boy..cmon. First off let me say I have been to this resturaunt about 100 times and love the food for the most part. Their seafood is normally on point and there servers are top notch. I have to say however I am seriously thinking about not eating here ever again. The prices have risen and you would think you are eating at a 5star resturaunt when it comes to the bill. This place must be making money. My main problem is with the 2 ladies that work the checkout. I suspect they are the owners of this place. These ladies are extremely rude and obnoxious. My friend came into town with his boyfriend's Lafayette family and they chose The Galley for dinner because they all wanted crawfish. I arrived to the restaurant first and stood at the counter while an older women shuffled tickets around. I stood there for quite some time before she made eye contact and never even said 'hello'. I politely told her there would be five of us. She walked away without saying anything and I turned around and she gestured at a table. I sat down and wasn't greeted by anyone for 15 minutes. My friends arrived at that time and then we all sat at the table for another 30 minutes (45 minutes total) without even being greeted by a single person or given menus. The best thing we ate was a plate of onion rings that were accidentally placed on our table. Our server came over like she was going to take it off our table and deliver it to the rightful owners after it had already been sitting on our table. I had the Spinach Artichoke dip special that was served with some stale, chewy pita & an olive salad that was just an overwhelming pile of chopped olives in a bowl of oil. My friends started with charbroiled oysters and they all ordered multiple pounds of crawfish that tasted like they were cooked heavily only using one spice and nothing else. Our table was right next to the food holding area, if you will. Fresh cooked food would be brought to this area and poured in bins to sit and then microwaved right before it was served - so that felt like it was violating some Temperature Danger Zones regulations. After getting there at 7pm, sitting for 45 minutes without being greeted and not getting our food until 8:15pm, they ended up rushing us out because they closed at 9. We asked for an itemized bill and our server brought us a scribbled order ticket so who knows what we actually paid for, but the added 20% gratuity she had added for herself was written clear as day on the back. My friends & I all worked in the service industry before we became nurses, so we would've given her 20% regardless of our terrible experience, but the audacity was surprising. I guess The Galley doesn't have to worry about providing good customer service or even greeting guests within an hour if they're adding automatic gratuities to all tables. "Hope it's ok to share a bizarre thing that happened to me today, while catching up with an old friend over lunch at The Galley restaurant on Metairie Road. The restaurant is snug, and the acoustics are such that one has to speak above the din to be heard by one's fellow diner. And we were seated near the maitre d station. So, at the end of the meal, I was filling my friend on my activism efforts since 2016 -- first such efforts as a lifelong independent. My friend does not support Trump but had criticisms of Biden, none having to do with his age --my friend is almost as old as Biden! The woman employee from the maitre d station came up to our table and, in a hostile manner said "Biden sucks! A man sitting at a table behind us alone reiterated "Trump is great!" At this point, we'd paid our bill and had been lingering in conversation. I immediately felt unsafe and told my friend "we're leaving." As we were leaving, the woman said "I love Trump!"
