Nuo quickly became a TikTok sensation, specifically for its baseball-sized mochi stuffed with all kinds of sweet and savory fillings. With the popularity came hours-long queues and a feature in the LA Times. Nuo Mochi is posted up in Monterey Park's Mar Center shopping plaza. Parking is available in the trim, semi-enclosed lot looped around the back. Outside, a narrow bench constitutes the minimal seating space. The interior is extra minimalist, in the forlorn rather than chic way. The all-white walls are "decorated" with framed menus. Order directly from the jumbo tablets, and get a text once your order is prepared. Chinese pop drowns out the intermittent chatter of patrons. I've only ever visited on weekdays, and each time I have fortunately faced only a 5-minute wait. Across my visits, I've tried a wide swath of flavors, and my favorites have been the simplest. Broadly, each fist-sized mochi ball was wrapped in Saran and plopped into a paper takeout cup. The delicate mochi coating was always overwhelmed by the rich, hefty filling. The best was the Dark Chocolate Mochi, filled with a decadent, frosting-thick chocolate mousse and crunchy chocolate chips; it reminded me of the best parts of a Cosmic Brownie. Meanwhile, the Sesame, Peanut Mochi opted for a gritty mixture of black sesame, chopped peanut, and sugar crystals; the seemingly bizarre combination slowly grew on me. In contrast, the Black Sesame, Matcha, Chocolate Mochi was filled with an overly dense, dry rock of mostly flavorless sesame paste and matcha frosting. Lastly, the Taro, Cream Cheese, Oreo Mochi opted for stale cookies and a block of plain cream cheese. The service was quick and transactional, and the prices range from $3.50 for the most basic to over $7 for the more complex. Overall, my fiancee and I agreed that the mochi were simply not great.
