My love for Fish and Chips began when I went London almost 20 years ago. It was surprising to find one of the best versions I've had in Beaverton. The Frying Scotsman offered various fish options. I have only ordered the Large Battered Cod Fish and Chips (5 stars) because I prefer the classic choice. The quality and quantity were impressive. The large portion was big and shareable. The first time I got it I really thought I got an extra one by mistake. I reheat my leftovers in the oven. I prefer my fish and chips with malt vinegar, but this one doesn't need it. It was seasoned well enough that it was good as is. The delicately crisp batter had just the right thickness that complemented the fish. I prefer skinnier fries, but I liked these thicker and wider cut chips that were like potato wedges. It can sometimes feel greasy, but I'm definitely not counting calories when I indulge in this meal. It appeared to be a one person operation unlike the other food carts. It's been that same nice guy multitasking different orders. It's made to order so there is a brief wait before getting the hot off the fryer fish and chips. This could be a one star update but I just can't - I feel like I'm at a duel of wits with the owner/chef of this cart, but the kind where only I am aware of it. Still craving the deliciousness of the fish and chips, we came by the BG food cartel on a super rare work night takeout mission (like, maybe 3-5 times a year rate). Excited for some fish and chips on a "school night," I walked up to the Frying Scotsman, saw the owner, and patiently waited. Eventually I got a dismissive "eh," and took that as an "I'll be there eventually." About 5-10 minutes later (however long it took for my husband to choose, order and receive his food and then some), the owner said - "what are you doing there do you see I'm closed." Well; I said no, nope I don't, your sign says "open." To which he replied "that one doesn't." And he pointed to another, less prominent sign (sadly also right in front of my face) that did in fact say closed to the contrary of the big sign out front. Well, sir - that would have been a more helpful exchange about 10 minutes ago, vs the grunt I got, TBH. So, I wandered the area looking for something quick so I could eat with my husband and had a less than delicious Peruvian plate. Halfway into consuming that, I noticed a line forming at the Frying Scotsman, and eventually a customer with a plate of those fish and chips walked past me. Though I wanted to be over it, I can't lie - I did want to trash my dinner and go wait in that forsaken line yet again. I keep forgetting this place exists, and yet; every time I chance upon it I'm very surprised . Food is good, MUCH better when it's hot (I was In a rush so didn't get to eat it until it was lukewarm, which is my fault. The owner is umm... how do you say "not a people person but makes really good fish n chips" in English? Because he is that. Man, do I love this place! From that late great food cart pod across from "City Target" to that outstanding Beaverton food cart pod behind City Hall, this guy has held it down! Best, authentic fish and chips served in ample portions with homemade chips. When I was a kid, my USAF Dad was stationed at Lakenheath AFB in Great Britain. To conclude our first night in Portland, we decided to check out the popular BGs Food Cartel outdoor food court. My son was in the mood for a burger and tots (in retrospect we should have gone with his decision), and we were in the mood for seafood. I did a quick Yelp review and saw The Frying Scotsman Fish & Chips had solid reviews. Upon walking up to his establishment, he greeted us and asked what we would like to order. Since we have similar tastes, we both ordered red snapper and chips. My wife being the unofficial chef that she is, observed him preparing the meals. One thing that she noticed was that he did not use any kind of seasoning. With that being said, we were optimistic and confident that he had some magical touch that would make the fish delicious...boy were we wrong! The size of the two planks of fish was pretty impressive; however, that's where the good things end. The fish had absolutely no flavor and was extremely greasy. Unfortunately, our Airbnb did not have a stove, nor was it equipped with a line of chef's seasoning. Therefore, we could not bake away the grease and season the fish to our likings. However, one would argue that a meal that you purchase from a restaurant should not need to be "doctored up." He has vinegar and ketchup for the fish and chips, but I like lemon on my fish, so I just bring my own lemon from home. Because this is fried food, you'll want to eat it right there if possible. I am going to say that trite yelp thing, I wanted to love it. I did , really. I have been eyeing it for literally years but the timing was always off. They each came with one big piece of fish and a pile of chips and a teaspoon of coleslaw and a container of tartar sauce. The fish was nicely cooked under the batter, the batter was crunchy, it wasn't too salty, but it was just very very oily. So were the chips. They were nicely crispy but just not drained enough.Chauffeur speculated maybe the oil was not hot enough. Neither of us tried the coleslaw. Chauffeur only eats my mom's (or mine , now, RIP mom) and I cannot eat much raw stuff right now. The tartar sauce had big chunks of pickle in it, I loved that.
