Oh Boy!!! we have been coming to the station carts for many years, but i was always doing the tater tot cart... they left. so I followed the wife to the Halibuts. what a great friendly couple working the truck! you will pay top dollar for the fish, but it is outstanding! juicy and tender, a perfect plate of fish and chips. they are huge pieces so take the smaller portion, or take the big and take the extra home!
Eminently friendly couple serving up some fresh, tasty, crispy fried halibut and chips. My wife and I split a 4-piece which, at $40 a basket, we hoped would be enough to fill us up. Thankfully, the halibut pieces were not only massive, they were also tender, flaky, juicy and piping-hot! Among the best in the city, if you ask me! Additionally, the Piedmont Station food cart pod is probably the most aesthetic in Portland, and has a solid variety of dining options. Although we initially came here to try another cart, which was closed outside of their posted operating hours, their loss is Halibut's gain (and ours)! We'll definitely be back!
Unbelievably good fish and chips. Some of the best I've tasted. No, I'm serious. The chowder has a great texture and very strong bacon and black pepper flavor. It's very hearty, not thin at all. The coleslaw was excellent, even the cocktail and tartar sauce were amazing. If you want fish and chips, just go. Yes, it is expensive but the fish tastes like it's as fresh as possible.
It's in a fun little food cart pod. The owner is nice with a little bit of a smart mouth. I got the Alaskan True Cod and it was really good, it was seasoned very nicely and the batter was light and crispy 8 out of 10. The tiger prawns were great as well, seasoned good and light and crispy 8.5 out of 10. The clam chowder was good but had too much pepper, so if you like it peppery you'll love their chowder 6.5 out of 10. The chicken strips were large but just store bought chicken strips 7.5 out of 10. Seafood, crispy coating, tartar sauce....what's not to like about that? I love fish and chips so much I've driven out to the coast just to get a really good basket of deep-fried fish. Now that I've found this place, I won't have to. I ordered the two-piece Alaskan True Cod meal, which came with a very generous portion of fish and fries (along with tartar sauce, ketchup, and a seafood/cocktail sauce). The cod was fresh, flaky, and perfectly cooked. The word I'd use to describe it is "buttery." And the batter...what can I say? Light, nicely seasoned, and crispy as hell. I was actually sad when the meal was over. To top this off, the owners were incredibly sweet and gave great service. If you're ever at the Piedmont Food Carts, you need to give this place a try.
Probably one of the BEST fish and chips, we've tried traveling along the Oregon coast/going through Oregon. The fish quality is amazing. Especially their Alaskan halibut. You HAVE to get what they specialize in, please. You will not be disappointed. The breading on the fish... wow so crispy flaky, nice and thin, where you won't get sick of it. The breading doesn't overpower the fish. The fries, I feel are just as important when it comes to fish and chips. These were nicely seasoned with the prefect crunch. Bruhhh don't even get me started on their clam chowder, soo yummy. Very tasty. Only thing, however I wished that the clam chowder had more chunky pieces of clams, I love being able to chew on them.
Oh me oh my. The fish here was so good. I had just come from a little trip to the coast trying a bunch of Fish and Chips spots and seafood, and this place blew all of them out of the water. The guy said the Sockeye Salmon Fish was 'stupid good' and he was not wrong. The guy knows his fish and loves to talk about it haha. The cocktail sauce is tasty too. I liked the Clam Chowder too but the fish is what I would come back for. This cart is located in the Piedmont station food truck pod and there is plenty of outdoor/covered and indoor seating, and also many other tasty food options in case you were craving fish n chips but no one else in your group is.
I ordered the catfish and clam chowder. Both were ~very~ salty and peppery--too much for my comfort to the point that it took over every other flavor in my mouth. After stopping for fish and chips and chowder in Astoria and Seattle, I wanted to find something comparable closer to home but this place was just alright, not amazing. It would've been better if it weren't so heavily seasoned (and I usually love very salty and spiced things). But I do think the service was 5 stars and the ambience of the food truck market (with live music) was great! I wanted to love the food but I do have this critique.
Fish and chips. This is the real deal. We ordered cod/chips: Fresh. Hot. Fast. And served by really nice folks behind the counter. I'm not a huge coleslaw fan, but their slaw was creamy/sweet. The portion sizes were generous. Can't wait to return for more!

Owner is a super friendly guy and is fun to talk to especially for a first time visiter. Had to get a 2-piece (4-piece is the other option) of their halibut in order of their food cart name. The 2-piece halibut will run you $16 vs. their salmon or cod which run $11 but worth trying. Each entree comes with a side of fries, tartar sauce, and malt vinegar. The fish here was flaky and had a super light coating (might be tempura?). I only slightly would prefer it to be fried a little longer as I like the coating to stay on a bit more with my fish. Top it with the lemon, malt vinegar, and if you like cocktail sauce and you got yourself a meal. I enjoyed the detail on the fries as they had freshly ground black pepper! We also got a cup of their chowder based on the reviews and it's wonderful on a cold day. It's savory and has a thick consistency which I like with my chowders. Owner is super great to ensure you have all sides and your meal whether you're eating in or taking it to go. We took it to go this time so didn't get to enjoy in their seating area but this food pod has plenty of seating for both small and large groups.
Make sure they are open. Good fresh fish. I was recommended this place. Did not disappoint! Simple & delicious!

Service was so friendly and quick! Food came piping out, the cod melted in my mouth. The batter was insane. I'm not normally a crinkle cut fry fan but the way they season them and make them extra crispy ... I'm changed! I love all the sauces that came with it and I appreciated the lemon slice too. Coming to the PNW from AZ we were excited to have fish and chips. The Original Halibut's came through with the lightly battered cod and the perfectly seasoned chips. We will definitely be making this a restaurant to return to for its great service and fun environment nestled away amongst other food trucks. read more

Wow! Don't let this being a food truck stop you from going. We're from Phoenix, so we know good seafood... no we actually do because we go out of state to eat it! What can I say about The Original Halibuts? The couple(?) running it are super kind and helpful. They want you to enjoy yourself! We got a 4 piece Alaskan Halibut and 2 cups of Chowder and boy oh boy... we were in for a treat. The chowder was warm and creamy and thick, perfect on a cool, dreary day. The fish, well, let's just say we are still talking about it. It was flaky and the batter was perfect. I will come back here specifically for this fish. The fries and homemade sauces were amazing as well. THANK YOU ORIGINAL HALIBUTS If 6 Stars were possible, this place deserves it! read more

This place was AH-MAZING!! My son recommended this place and boy did it deliver! The fish was so fresh, flaky and battered to perfection. He warned us that the chowder was the best around, and he was absolutely correct! It was so creamy, buttery and seasoned well. Contrary to what other reviewers say, the owner was hilarious. It was a warm Sunday afternoon and we stopped here to order lunch for the kids - who doesn't love a great fried lunch? We got the Alaskan Cod & Giant Tiger Prawns - both came with fries and dipping sauce. There was quite a bit of batter on the cod but it was crisp on the outside and juicy inside - we peeled off extra batter, no problem. There were only 4 prawns on the plate - I might have rethought my order had I known that ahead of time. Fries were seasoned to perfection and kept crisp during the ride home. How good could fish and chips from a food cart possibly be, you ask? I'll tell you: better than any restaurant fish and chips I've ever had. Visiting from Los Angeles and made my way to the food truck/trailer scenes. On the road there was plenty of parking, and even a parking structure that you can park in for free. The food trailers were in a U shape and I'd say at least 80% were open for business. When taking my walk about and figuring out what I wanted this truck jumped out at me. From the woman who was taking orders to the gentleman that was cooking, the whole experience was great. I settled in the Alaskan cod, and a cup of clam chowder. I was given a beeper and told that it would be about five minutes. Was able to snag a table and things were ready pretty quick. They weigh out the fish, so normally it's 2 pieces, but because of the weight I got 3. Everything came out super hot and smelled amazing. I first started with the chowder and it was delicious and pepper forward, which I LOVED! Let's talk about these fries...because let me tell you...these fries were fucking incredible. They had that crunch that when you heard it, you were like, "oh hell yeah." They we're so so good. If I had had just the fries and chowder I would have been happy...but, let's talk about the star of this plate. The fish. It was so crunchy, and delicious. The fish was flakey and melted in your mouth. I would have eaten the meal twice if I could have. Get. This. Food. You will be sad with any other choice. read more

Alright, let me just put this out there: I am an absolute "fish and chips snob". The vast majority of fish and chips I order at restaurants leaves me underwhelmed. It's rare that I order fish and chips and am happy with what I get. Which is why I'm very happy to say: The Original Halibuts is THE BOMB!!! In fact, after going today for the first time it has taken the helm as my favorite fish and chips anywhere in Oregon! That distinguished honor used to belong to Luna Sea in Yachats (which is still excellent). But yeah, The Original Halibuts is even better! What makes it so good? First, the halibut is absolutely fresh and of the highest quality. You can't fake that part either, so color me impressed. Second, the tempura-like batter is absolutely PERFECT! Good fish and chips is all about the fish, and the batter should be light, crisp, and not at all greasy. It should merely compliment the fish. (Far too many places over-batter and over-cook their fish, leaving you with a greasy, too-bready gut bomb.) In this regard The Original Halibuts nails the correct fish-to-batter ratio with a delicious, light, awesome crust. Third, the fries are plenty good. Not the absolute best I've had, but definitely better than average. And thankfully The Original Halibuts doesn't do something that I believe should be deemed a crime against humanity: they don't serve "battered fries". (It must be said yo...whoever invented "battered fries" should be lined up against a wall and summarily shot without trial.) Pricing is entirely fair for what you're getting. High quality halibut, right now, is about $25-$30/pound. Yeah, it's not cheap. But here the old adage rings true: "You get what you pay for." Seriously, if you're looking for what is hands-down the best fish and chips in Oregon, you have to check this place out. And as an added bonus the owners seem like really cool people who take pride in their food. It's always nice to see restauranteurs who give a sh*t. You won't be disappointed! read more

Oh my gosh! Absolutely amazing! The halibut is super fresh and completely melts and the outer crust on the halibut is so crispy. One of the best halibuts I have had in a very long time. The owner is super nice and very honest. Definitely try the oyster shooter it will wake you up! read more
