Finally decided to give this place a try. Their hours and location don't really work for me but, I was a few blocks away and decided to check it out. It's... a hole in a wall place. That's not a bad thing, I love them. This might be the most hole in a wall place in Portland I've seen - plenty of seating though. Couple working there (seems for ages) is super nice. Menu seems more scaled back then before. I asked which hot dog they recommend and they suggested the pastrami dog ($7.50). First time having one, pretty tasty. Hot dogs are not Costco prices but, pretty reasonable for what the market rate is for them out there. Nothing too fancy, but it all somehow works. Recently, I changed jobs. I am now a little further north but still in inner southeast. But it's an area that other than the Sheridan, I don't know much about. So, what I usually do is explore my new neighborhood and find out where the good food is. Now I work right across the street from Olympia Provisions, so I have that going for me once they are back open full swing. Oh, covid times. So in my wanderings, I came upon The Fried Onion and what appears to be the best hole in the wall that I never knew existed but I truly needed. East coast food, New York accents, a garage door and a grill. That's it. A very nice couple from the New York area run this unassuming place and they usually will have several of the warehouse workers from the area waiting in line for hot dogs, burgers or grilled sandwiches. They know regulars by name and don't care for the Boston Rex Sox. Get on their good side and be a Yankees fan when you get food. Igloo coolers housing cold sodas, spicy sauces and jalapeños. Fresh rolls toasted on the grill and of course the fried onions that should be put on anything you order. Request them if they aren't on what you choose. Just bantering with this couple is enough, but the food IS really good and a taste of the northeast. Thumann's meats is a good way to do that. It's New York, It's New Jersey and it's Philly. Order anything, whether it's a burger, a cheddar jalapeño dog, pastrami or a Portland beef sandwich. You won't regret it and you'll be back. This joint is almost more of a glorified food-cart in its temp feeling, although there is some indoor seating. No frills. Limited hours around the lunch hour. Limited menu (burgers, dogs and pastrami sammiches). Limited beverages. None of these comments are negative - just stating the facts. If you compare it to traditional sit-down restaurants, it doesn't compare well. If you compare it to food carts, it holds up very well. That said, the folks are really friendly and the chow is good. The atmosphere is laid back and comfy, but it isn't really a place you'd linger. The sammiches were served on flat bread vs traditional sliced bread and that worked pretty well. If you're looking for a definition of hole-in-the wall, look no further than in this industrial part of town. This is basically a garage or large storage space, but not enhanced to make it look any better. There's ample seating, and check out the kitchen in the photo. It was on my list after seeing it featured on the Travel Channel's "Secret Eats" hosted by Alan Richman. I ordered the recommended Moussa and it delivered. The owner was very friendly; people seemed to be tipping extra as he's the kind you root for. Parking is super tough! A somewhat unique dining experience for sure. read more

I seriously don't understand all of the spectacular reviews for this place. To be fair, we only tried the hot dogs. We needed a quick place to grab lunch on our way from Seattle to a friend's wedding outside of Portland. I did a Yelp search and came across this place. We ordered the "Almost" Chicago and Spicy Slaw Dog. They were just pretty average, but fairly pricey ($5+) for their size. I wish the buns were different, they were not good and the dogs slipped out halfway through. Moreover, the dogs themselves were average, nothing to write home about. The owners were very nice and offered us a taste of the pastrami, which was great, and I instantly regretted ordering the hot dogs. I used to live near Katz, so I know a thing or two about good pastrami. Anyway, if I have to base this place purely on the hot dogs alone, it's between 1-2 stars. read more

The elderly couple running this place are extremely friendly and have a steady clientele that keep coming for their workday lunches. I got the moussa, which is a feast of pastrami, fried onions, swiss and their superb spicy russian sauce on an onion roll. Their pastrami is top notch, probably the best I've had in pdx. We were lucky that there wasn't a line and our moussa sandwiches were ready in just a few minutes. They have a few tables inside near the grill and the coolers. Nice older couple, him doing the cooking and she doing the prep. This is good stuff with all the layers having good taste and texture. The bun was good and stood up to the tender and juicy meat, tasty sweet grilled onions, peppers, Swiss cheese and spicy russian dressing. Everything about this sandwich worked well and the price is reasonable at $9. Every bite was full of flavor that wasn't just a mix of all the ingredients but layers of each ingredient. Also - the bun it is served on is like waterproofed .. best way I can describe it - its soft , chewy but has some elasticity in it which means no soggy goopy bottoms . Service is kind and sincere - they seem like the kind of people who remember you by name and what your exact order is . Now that's a good dog! These folks from Chicago know how to line up a hot dog menu! Get a spicy, regular or beer dog with a variety of fixings. I got fried onions on mine because of the namesake. Very nice simple dog. They have as many condiments as they do varieties of hot dogs (meaning a lot). This place is great! Seriously, check out the pic of the menu, there's a whole matrix of options. Expect to pay between $4 and $5.25 depending on loaded you get it. Mine was $4.75. They are located in a small parking lot off of NW 23rd. I think you can park in there to grab a dog, but I'm not positive. I parked on a side street. Gotta love their love of their Chicago heritage: there's a Boston Red Sox fan surcharge. ** 4.5 stars ** A couple originally from NYC peddles NY-style hot dogs, burgers, and deli sandwiches in a garage furnished like a living room, fronted by a street cart, in a sea of warehouses. Almost have to see it to believe it. But once found, I find it hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't return, if they could. The couple who run the cart are incredibly friendly and clearly enjoy interacting with people. And their wares are worth a mention too. The plainspoken menu is charmingly marked all over with new prices and changes, with some NY classics and plenty of local variations. They proudly hawk the NY theme, with "Whaddya Want?" prominently displayed on the menu and a cheeky note to Red Sox fans about a surcharge ... for being Red Sox fans. While we debated what to order, they grilled up some Italian sausage for us to try, which incidentally was delicious. We settled on the pastrami Reuben, freshly prepared and piping hot. I remain of the opinion that the pastrami at Katz's is the one to beat, so that win goes to Katz's, but The Fried Onion otherwise did an outstanding version of a Reuben, from the excellent soft roll to the good blend of melted Swiss, Thousand Island, and sauerkraut. Good sandwich, and they sliced it up in quarters for us to share. Interesting set of condiments to choose from too. As strange as it may sound, I'd return to The Fried Onion on a future Portland trip to try their NY-style hot dogs, or even a burger. I'll never know until I try, is my motto. We were standing there, after we gave our orders, when the chef gave us a good portion sample of pastrami. I've never had a good heated pastrami, I've always thought they were salty, and I hated it. A wonderful example of great food served by even greater people. The two running the shop are clearly passionate about their food and the people that eat it. Delicious and affordable food in a small hole in the wall brimming with personality. We had The Mouzza (a pastrami sandwich so good I had to apologize to my mother and admit she has never come close to making one this good), the NY Dog, and The Pastrami Burger. All of them were delicious and fairly priced. The Spicy Russian sauce is absurdly good. As long as you're not a Red Sox fan, they take care of you. We were treated to free chocolate bars for being polite and we witnessed the owners offering a hot meal to a homeless man walking by. You get the feeling that they appreciate every customer who pays a visit and it's a privilege to support them and their business. read more

Been trying to get to their new location (SE 3 and Alder), to try their new Reuben sammich, ever since they rolled it out. I know, you're saying WTF? What's a reuben got to do with burgers, dogs, and pizza? Well, you see, I occasionally like a few other things. Happened to be in the neighborhood today, which is very industrial, but that's probably the appropriate location for an "industrial strength" corned beef sammich. Like everything they do, preparation is meticulous, and the corned beef is piled high on the rye, kraut and mustard to your own specs (I opted for mucho kraut and yellow 'stard), and a slab o' swiss. I opted out of the thousand island which is common to reubens, just a personal taste thing, but you might like some on yours. So it's a great sandwich, a nice addition to their great burgers and dogs. They have a nice little new cubby, and a couple of picnic tables provide shelter from this long stretch of miserable Portland rain. Good job, guys. Thanks for another great sammich! read more

I had the Pastrami Burger with a Dr.Browns Ginger Ale and I split a Brick House dog with my buddy and both selections were extremely delicious!
