After a delightful meal at the first Foxtail, we were looking forward to something equally fabulous at the newly refurbished Glenview House, the new Foxtail restaurant, and one of several new entrants to the Glenview dining scene. I wish I could say it was as fabulous as the original... perhaps still a few bugs in the system....but for now, only fair.
The room is fabulous. Exposed wood beams, outdoor seating, indoor seating, three bars, an upstairs, a back deck -- the room is FABULOUS. Clear that they did a lot of work to convert the old gastro pub space into something more upscale.
The menu, as advertised, and as is the case with the original in Des Plaines, has a Mediterranean bent to it. It will be interesting to see how this does; I suspect that they'll need to go a little more mainstream in the fullness of time, however the selection of Greek and other Mediterranean dishes was impressive and mostly intriguing.
Reservations are HARD to get, perhaps because they're brand new. We were surprised when we walked in without a reservation and saw a variety of open tables (perhaps the bar tables are reserved for walk-ins? Regardless...there were PLENTY of places to sit). We chose (as we often do) a corner at the bar for our dining spot. Disappointed that somehow both TVs went from the Cubs/Brewers game to early season football between two non-Chicago teams, but whatever...hardly why we were there, but an interesting choice.
Long list of good-looking starters/shareables. We started with the shrimp saganaki, which was definitely shrimp but definitely not saganaki in the traditional sense. More like shrimp in a tomato sauce served with some pieces of toasted bread. It was quite good and ample in size (five large shrimp)...but a bit surprising compared to its name.
Our entrees were also good. After a chat with the bartender and a discussion about what they are selling the most of...we took part of her counsel. My companion had the salmon poke bowl and enjoyed it immensely. I had a hard time deciding, my questions about the menu notwithstanding; the Tagine, Paella, and Risotto all looked good...I chose the duck confit risotto and it was quite good.
Nice list of cocktails and wines both by the glass and bottle.
Here's where they lost me. Both hot dishes came out pretty lukewarm --- not cold enough to send back, but notable enough to be a little disappointed, especially at the price point. Service was attentive but imho lacking some professionalism...team smacking gum open-mouthed and twice responding to a "thank you" with "yeah" -- sharp contrast to the higher end service at a couple of the other new Glenview spots.
Perhaps amusing, but interesting: I noted to our server that they had left a glass of wine off of the tab... Were it MY restaurant, that would be met with a "thank you for noticing our mistake -- that's on us." Not here...so I got to sign a second check as a price for my honesty.
Premium priced to be sure, and it has the potential to be a premium experience...but not quite there yet. Will give it another try in hopes that they up their game a bit -- which will be necessary in this increasingly competitive downtown dining hub. read more
