Have passed by this restaurant for years. After a personal recommendation, we tried it today, and it's now one of our favorite restaurants in Abilene! We typically have haunted the Cracker Barrel and IHOP for breakfast, but The Flipping Egg is our new first pick for breakfast! Waited one whole hour to get a table when we were told it would take 20-30 min. After asking time and time again we were always told 10 more min then that passed 7 more min then that passed 5 more min - yeah NO. There were so many empty tables in the place too. This restaurant is just so poorly run. My family went in on a Sunday morning and were told it was a 20 minute wait. Totally understand as it's a popular spot and breakfast time at 930 am. There was about 30 people waiting and when I went to use the bathroom I realized more people were waiting to be seated than were actually already seated. Over half the tables were empty and many were waiting just to be greeted. After finally being sat it took awhile to get any kind of drink in which we just ordered everything ahead of time. As we waited for our drinks and food I watched as the manager just wandered around checking random things while not looking very busy. Meanwhile his staff was hustling trying to get people served. The food was average and my wife and I who were both in the service industry for over 10 years each, both agreed we would never waste our time with this establishment again. If you're the owners and you read this. You're losing money every day you open because you can't even seat your tables. Sad to see so much wasted potential. read more

The "small cup" which is priced $2.00 is 6oz which is not stated on the menu. Small eggs were used without any seasoning. Bacon was mainly fat. Silverware was dirty and tarnished. Menu was easy to read but should be updated. The staff is their saving grace and were very polite and helpful. Environment is plain and of a 1960's diner style but kept clean. We left Cracker Barrel because the wait there was ridiculous. And landed here at the flipping egg. There was parking and a few people in the lobby suggesting that we might still be enjoying a brunch. We were weary of giving this place a shot because of the low rating. But we are new in town and wanted to eat some breakfast out. We walked into the restaurant to find a packed waiting room, not a single person in a mask. If you are concerned about masks or social distancing, DO NOT COME HERE. As someone who has had a really rough year and a half, it was great to see the normalcy and people being open and warm with each other. That alone I would give it five stars. The atmosphere is adorable and the food is great, and they actually have gluten-free pancakes! This was the best news I've had since we've been here the last two days! It is so sad to me that this is only one of a few breakfast places in Abilene. Their eggs Benedict, which I had been excited to try, was absolutely foul. They do not advertise it correctly! Seems like a scammy tactic. Their English muffin was off and had more of a white bread consistency, they do NOT use Canadian bacon, but instead settled for a cheaper alternative Black Forrest Ham. Was that listed anywhere? No. Their hash browns are literally flavorless and the hollandaise sauce sadly follows in that category but it was also curdled when I got it. I have tried this place multiple times and can say it's just not that great. The prices are also insane for drinks. Its $4+ per drink. They charge an extra dollar for some canned whip on your drink. read more

UPDATE: I love the Flipping Egg for all the reasons stated below in my first review but as COVID has hit our world and specifically our town, I was shocked to go here for my birthday breakfast 2 weeks ago to find the place packed - all tables and booths filled, and no masks on a single server (tho the front hostess had one). When I raised this to our waitress, Susie, (who was also the manager) she was ok at first but became incredibly rude to us as I tried to explain my feelings. I was shocked!! The exchange was somewhat lengthy but basically I tried to tell her why I was so bothered and after a few minutes going back and forth she got more and more heated in her response. She claimed she needed to make money and her staff needed to make a living. I said, well, sure, but they could wear masks! Her response was "It's their choice" followed by "you are free to leave you won't hurt my feelings!" Whereupon she picked up our drinks and walked off. I'm so sad that this incident happened since there's no place like the Flipping Egg in Abilene. But I won't go someplace that violates Gov Abbott's Heath requirements and more over I won't spend my money where I'm treated like that, especially by the manager. I was going to take a picture of my California Benedict but once it arrived I forgot all about pictures or yelp and just dove in. So I took a picture of my empty dish. . It really tells the story of how good this place is. The eggs were poached perfectly, the baby spinach avocado and tomato were super fresh (and the tomato thick-sliced). Now, I'm a total hollandaise snob (the hollandaise does make the Benedict, after all) and the Flipping egg homemade hollandaise was simply scrumptious on top of that pile of eggspinachtomatoavacado! I ate the regular hash browns this time but on my next visit I'll get the Texas hash! Hash browns with jalapeño, cheese and onions. Waitress Sharon was awesome too, cheerful and helpful. She suggested I add some of their home made salsa, which totally added the spicy zip we love around these parts. Coffee was hot, tasty and abundant for us early risers. This is a very good place to eat Breakfast anytime of the morning. They have so many choices of pancakes and waffles and eggs. We took a few minutes to just read the menu. I chose the strawberry waffle and I was not disappointed. My only complaint was they don't offer turkey sausage or bacon that a lot of people eat now instead of pork. BUT let me tell you what I think... I went to breakfast this past Sunday and when I walked in it was packed to capacity and no one was wearing masks. It was amazing! I haven't been anywhere that's felt more normal, like the world hasn't gone completely crazy, in a long time. And *Gasp* the condiments were on the table. And while I'm ranting, let me say that wearing a mask to a restaurant and then taking it off so you're breathing the same air as everyone else is the most ludicrous mandate in the universe. It was cheesy with lots of hashbrowns and jalapeños and two perfectly cooked eggs over easy with crispy bacon and toast - YUM! My daughter got the cinnamon roll pancakes and she said if I hadn't raised her better she would have licked the plate clean. First of all as a lover of the YELP app, I always choose where to eat in different cities I visit and for this restaurant where I currently live. I haven't eaten at this restaurant in a few years & I believe it's under new management. So my husband and I tried it since it was his first time. Let me just start by saying..,. They are proud of their pancakes!! We normally share a meal since between the 2 of us, we don't eat much. We ordered the "Normal" plate that comes with 1 pancake. We saw the picture of this "Normal" plate with 2 pancakes with strawberries & bananas on it. The server asked do we want "2 pancakes"? We said yes, we ordered the pancakes to be the peanut butter chocolate chip w/bananas in between them, It came with the 2 scrambled eggs and 2 strips of bacon. We added cheese to the eggs & had 2 coffees. When we got the receipt to pay, we were charged $12.00 too much. They didn't mention that we had to pay extra for the specialty pancake (that was shown in the pic to come with it). Just look at our receipt to see. The manager would not let us speak to the owner and they wouldn't correct the over charge. The manager even tried to give us her own money of $10 to get us to leave because she was busy and didn't want to take care of it. She stated the owner was not there and had just left. (Another server had shown us one of the owners earlier, and she was still there, that wouldn't come out and take care of it.) The pancakes didn't have bananas on them either & they charged $2.25 for a single plain pancake that we never got. So what should've been a $15 meal was double. We paid $31.59 for 1 plate. Overall, the food quality was average, presentation was nothing special, customer service was very poor, they were not helpful to correct the bill and they didn't care to correct it either! Because I have to rate this for the review, I have to give 1 star We will not be going back and I would recommend you ask questions while ordering & check your bill before paying. Amazing service, superb food! I got Eggs Benedict with TX hash and hubby got the TX pancake wrap. Impeccable presentation and looked so good, didn't have time to snap photo-had to dive in. Benedict is my favorite breakfast and I can say honestly, this was one of the best. Poached eggs seem to trip up most and theirs was spot on!
