They have the best smoothies (and bowls). Great flavours, really high quality, healthy and…read moresatisfying. And they always take such care putting together the bowls for a neat presentation. My top picks are the Nutty Cashew smoothie and Green Goddess bowl, but I end up enjoying whatever I get, even when I order outside my usual go-to flavours. Their stuff is not cheap but it's absolutely worth it. Their prepared wraps are also very good, as are the baked goods they carry by Rebel and To Live For. They have an extensive selection of protein powders and other supplements - I'm not into supplements besides protein powder so I wouldn't really know, but I find it hard to imagine needing something in that department that they don't carry. Even though I'm not the gym bro that the brand is probably aimed at, and you can definitely tell by looking at me, I never really feel out of place coming here for my smoothies and meals and occasional protein impulse buys. The staff is always friendly. Just keep in mind it can get busy and you may have to wait a while because the process is just not the fastest, especially for bowls, and even one of the premade wraps will take a few minutes if you opt to get it heated (which you should). But I highly recommend checking them out for a smoothie or (relatively) quick and healthy meal!

This is a new food outlet in a new building at UBC that offers a quick shopping stop for just about…read moreanything. The ready-to-eat end of the store features sandwiches, pizza, salads, baked goods, a breakfast (AM)/salad (PM) bar, and a coffee bar. There are vegan options and gluten-free options. Most of the GF stuff looks to be actually safe for those who have serious gluten intolerance since it's in sealed packaging and appears to be made in an outside kitchen. I was looking forward to having somewhere new to go since I've spent many years involved with UBC in some way and frequented the heck out of most every decent cafe on campus. My first experiences have unfortunately been pretty lacklustre. Baked goods: The peanut butter chocolate chip cookie was super dry and crumbly. Chocolate almond biscotto was pretty good - crunchy but not brittle. The GF muffin was kind of dry (I get it, it's GF, but I've had GF muffins with great texture so I know it's possible) but was still okay. My biggest issue wasn't the muffin itself, it was that they had all the GF muffins in a basket together with no other labelling as to what kind of muffin they were and you couldn't really tell from looking, so I was making an educated guess as to what else would likely be in the muffin I was grabbing with the oats and seeds on top. It turned out to be cranberries which was good. Pizza: Vegan margherita wasn't bad because the crust was great and the vegan cheese was fine which is 2/3 of the equation, but the sauce was seemingly totally unseasoned which gave it a very cafeteria-like quality. Also there were like 3 1/2 basil leaves for the entire pizza. Sandwich: Got a tuna salad sandwich from the fridge. Again not bad but just an assembly problem. I really like the multigrain seed bread but the slices were a little too thick which made the sandwich very bread-y, and the tuna salad was lumped in the middle instead of spread out evenly so the outer bites of sandwich have nothing between the bread. Drinks: Good, I think. I tried a matcha latte with spiced brown sugar syrup and a decaf americano. The matcha was a little clumpy but passable and the spiced brown sugar syrup was very nice. The americano was good. Besides the extensive options for ready-to-eat food, the grocery selection is decent, comparable to what you might find at a small drugstore. In general the brands available are high quality but a lot of the produce looks like stuff you'd only want to buy if you were going to use it immediately. If you were living on campus it would be a very convenient place to grab a few things in an emergency but not a substitute for an actual grocery/produce store. They're trying out self checkout here which works fine for groceries but is really confusing for the coffee bar. The first time I visited, I tried to tell my order to the barista, but they told me to use the self checkout and give them the receipt. The next time I wanted to order a drink, I went immediately to the self checkout and started to use it, but then the barista came over and swivelled the screen around and took my order normally. If you order food from the deli, you place the order with the employee there and they give you the food with a barcode on it to scan at the checkout. So you can't really order hot food and drinks/pastries at the same time, you have to wait for your hot food to be prepared and then go checkout and wait for drinks. Wait time has been minimal for me because I've been going at off-times, but I imagine this would be really annoying at lunchtime on a weekday. I guess it shouldn't be surprising that the food isn't the most refined given it's campus food, but I am disappointed because I think the food is better at the other locations of both Harvest (Ponderosa Commons) and Hero (Orchard Commons).

So expensive for no reason. You end up spend 5x the amount for anything. Go to Great Dane insteadread more

The…read moreproduce looks great, but everything is pricey, and you can go to the Save-On in Wesbrook and get the same products and, I'm pretty sure, spend less (I haven't don't an organized comparison, but this is my impression from eyeballing the prices here and having done my regular shopping at Save-On for years). There are some specialty health-oriented snacks here that you can't find everywhere that I'd consider buying here, but otherwise it's not worth it for me. The grocery store may not be for me, but I absolutely love the cafe departments of this store. There are counters for sandwiches, sides, poke, salads, a bakery, and coffee/smoothies. The baked goods can compete with the best bakeries in the city (the muffins and scones in particular), and if you go in the morning, you might get them still-warm out of the oven. All of the made-to-order meals are great, made with the freshest produce, and the salads are huge. The "coffee shop" counter has some smoothies pre-made and bottled to go, but you can also request any of the smoothies off the menu made fresh, and the "Cookies & Cream" smoothie (made with cacao nibs, not cookies) I got the other day was the most delicious thing. Interestingly, this store also does bubble tea. When I tried to order it, they were out of toppings, but the lychee green tea by itself was super refreshing - no cheap tea mix. Miraculously, this stuff is all cheaper than you would find similar items at a proper restaurant. Whether you're there for groceries or just a bite to eat, the staff is mostly very friendly and the store is clean, aesthetically appealing, and easy to navigate, making it a pleasant shopping experience.

First of all, pretty much every staff member I encounter, and there are many, greet me with a smile and say hello. I don't see that happening in any other food store I visit. In fact, most staff members avert their eyes, turn their heads or just generally ignore me like I don't exist. Even stores I've shopped in regularly for nearly 10 years. At this Urban Fare, they sometimes ask if I need help or if I'm finding what I need. I really appreciate the friendly customer service. If I ask a question and the person doesn't know the answer, they ask someone who does. Today I was trying to find the price of a gingerbread house kit in a new display that wasn't priced yet. Two young women put in the effort to find the price, which was $20. Later I looked on the website of the kit maker (US) and the price of the same kit online is $25US plus shipping. So prices may be generally high at Urban Fare, but I got a deal on this special pink blingy gingerbread house kit I haven't seen anywhere else. Other things I like. The store is well laid out and items are displayed beautifully and with care. Lighting is pleasant and the ambience is calm and peaceful. Prices are generally high, but they do have some good specials. You just need to know your prices. I managed to spend $75 there today, so they obviously have things at a good price or that I can't find anywhere else. Every department has top quality goods. There are areas with fresh hot foods (they'll make you a gorgeous sandwich or a full meal with sides), made-on-the-spot sushi and salads, a deli counter with every kind of cold meat and gorgeous cheeses. I bought a chicken pot pie ($6.99) from the hot section, which I was assured was a "regular" chicken pie and not the butter chicken version. Got nothing against butter chicken, but I wanted the regular old comfort food version. As soon as I opened it at home I knew it was butter chicken from the aroma. I was a bit annoyed, as I'd specifically inquired to make sure what it was. However, I heated it up and ate it and couldn't believe how delicious it was. Absolutely loaded with chicken, a very light butter chicken flavour, not at all spicy, and a golden, crispy pastry top. I could only eat half of it and put the rest away for tomorrow. Easily one of the tastiest chicken pies I've ever had. I would buy it again. What else? Huge Hass avocadoes for 99 cents each. So there are bargains to be had. Some stores are still charging $3 for them. There are places to sit and eat and at lunchtime today the tables and window counter were full of working men in hi-vis jackets chowing down. That's a sign this place is doing something right in the area of ready food. The other half of the store is basic packaged groceries. I rarely buy from that section because most of the things I get other places for less money. There's a No Frills near me and they have some great prices on basics. However, comparing ambience, customer service, friendliness of staff, quality of products, availability of items not available elsewhere, the overall aesthetics, lighting, music, no lines at cashiers, etc., Urban Fare has a whole heck of a lot going for it. I will get on that bus again and shop at Urban Fare because it's a lovely experience.

From the moment we walked into this brightly lit and pleasantly decorated place, it was a start of a real treat. We had Tandoori chicken which was moist and nicely seasoned. The eggplant bharta was very tasty and good portion. Lamb biriyani was tasty but I wished there were more lamb though. The highlight and agreed by most of us was the Goa fish curry which has quite a few pieces of Alaska cod and not the typical cheap basa fish used by most other Indian restaurants. It was so good and creamy yet not heavy that reminded my partner of the time when we were actually in Goa having one of our best meal while visiting India. We cleaned the plate clean! lol. Service was great too. We plan to be back as we think this is one of the better Indian restaurants in town. They also have other interesting regional/style dishes from Kerala and Angara which I want to try on our next visit.
