I am honestly conflicted leaving them 3 stars, they are a sold 3.5 stars but could easily become 4 or more with some minor changes. We went for prime rib night, it's $50 a person and include prime rib, a side, and a single trip the the salad bar. We arrived at a half empty restaurant and were told they had sold out...we were advised to "reserve our prime rib" by calling a day ahead next time. Prime rib is my girlfriend's favorite and this was the main reason we came. I asked her if she wanted to stay or come back another time and she decided she would like to try it out. We settled in on the wagyu ribeye. It's a $69 steak. It is Australian and not Japanese. I normally get A5 Japanese. Their steak was rated BMS 8-9. I had sold her on getting it due to the tenderness and how wagyu just melts in your mouth, that it should be one of the best steaks she will ever try and that's where the disappointment set it, high expectations, low return. You can do a share plate for $17.50 which means you each get 1 trip to the salad bar and a side and can split the main. This was fine. She is gluten-free so we turned down the bread, however, they did have an amazing gluten-free chocolate cake for $12 that we got to go. So they do have a grasp of how to take care of people with the allergy. The salad bar is very small but the items are very fresh. Very similar to the Pedllers or Heaths but smaller plates and fewer items. This is where I think an improvement is due. Salad is a low cost item. Give people a bigger plate, especially with the limited number of items. They give you a bowl that has a steep edge reducing its capacity, my kids cereal bowls hold more. It's a bit disappointing. A salad plate would be better as it would give you an option to get the macaroni salad to try. It was good, but it is the smallest salad I've ever had at a steakhouse. When they brought out our steak they already cut it in half. I was not expecting this. I did not like the way they cut it either, it didn't work for us. I am a fat eater and my girlfriend is not, so if we are sharing a steak we usually trim it in a way to where I get more of the fat and she gets more of the beef. We ended up having to pass our plates back and forth anyway but they just made the job harder. They should have asked me before cutting it. Then sadly the next disappointment came with the steak itself. It was super thin, like pinky finger thin. Not what I expected from a wagyu steak. They are usually cut smaller in size but at least an inch, inch and a half thick. We ordered it medium-rare and it was overcooked. I would have ordered it rare had I known it was paper thin. The steak did have a nice crust and sear, nice flavor, but again, not in line with any wagyu steak I've ever had. Usually wagyu literally melts in your mouth like butter. This did not. This lead me to wonder if it was really a wagyu steak after all. I would have liked to have seen the marbling first before they cooked it but I never expected it to be that bad so I had no reason to ask. Here's the honest truth...I've had a better ribeye from Texas Roadhouse for half the price, hand cut and selected, good sear, melted in my mouth and it wasn't even wagyu. We both got sweet potatoes as a side and they were pretty typical as steakhouse potatoes go. Presentation was excellent. They offered compound butter for the steak which they melted at the table on top of the steak with a torch which was kind of cool...maybe offer fresh cracked pepper too? Michelle was our server and she was great, did an excellent job and continuously checked on us. The ambiance is a bit dark and they have a well stocked bar. Noise level was low. Total before tip was $108. Would we return? Unlikely. Maybe. Probably not. If we are going to drop money like that the Angus Barn is a magical experience, but it's a haul up there and a bit of a wait to get in. And if we're not going there we are probably just cooking at home or going to TR in Holly Springs. However, we might come back sometime to try the prime rib and we will remember to reserve it next time.
