I somehow managed to finish the marathon the next morning running laps around Lake Morley without much sleep. My friend booked the Silver Maple Lodge and cottages here in Fairlee, Vermont. It was a quaint home that's quite off the beat path. It felt homely, since it was a home that's converted to an Airbnb for guests and travelers. It felt like I was in a vintage antique home where you can peak into a room and that was what it looked like in the early 19th century. It wasn't like that in reality but it surely felt like it! My main problem was the beds. We were assigned the room with two beds that had a bathroom with tub in the corner of the house. I remember getting up to use it at least 4 times during the middle of the night and creeping back to the bed to try to sleep. The problem with the bed is that it was literally too small for me. If I rolled too far to the left or right, even a half a turn, I would have risked rolling off the bed and onto the wood floor. It was that small. It was comical when I look back on the experience but annoying as hell when I just wanted to get enough sleep to be fresh enough to endure 26.2 miles the next morning. Needless to say that wasn't the case, but managed to get enough sanity to ease myself thru and thought of that bed that wasn't comfortable at all. I don't mean to be mean, but that's my experience here at the Silver Maple lodge and cottages. While the prices maybe substantially cheaper than that of a hotel in the local area, I'd likely go with the hotel for a better night's stay. Airbnb's are great, just the bed here only. Wish I could get those 4 hours back instead of trying to make sure I don't roll off the bed in the middle of the night. The overall experience here at the Silver Maple lodge and cottages was severely mixed. On one hand, it was a good deal to split with a friend on the room rate on two bed unit in the home. The other hand, obviously was my quality of sleep - or lack thereof, during my stay here at the Silver Maple Lodge and Cottages. The home is quite nice though. It has everything you could possible need, while the guest rooms were decidedly upstairs. My friend and I bumped into other mutual friends who were staying the night there too, which was nice. My friend spent the evening having dinner in the dining area of the Airbnb, pizza and French fries while we waited out the storm to clear. Not sure if there was maid service, but after we left our leftover pizza there, it was taken care of after we gotten back from the nearby Dollar General store down the road. The service here was okay, although the reservation was under my friend's name. I was not there when he checked in. It was neat to see the 21st century improvements made on the house, since this house was aging and modern methods of upkeep was necessary as the years go by. Although my experience was lacking, along with my sleep and sanity that night, I managed to give all my gusto and finished the marathon the next morning around Lake Morley. Call it sheer will or just the wanting to succeed, the lack of sleep beforehand weighed heavily on me. Will I swear off Airbnb's completely? Not necessarily. Just depends I guess. Not to sound mean but never again here. But, if you enjoy vintage rustic Airbnb that's off the beaten path in southeast Vermont, consider coming to this hidden gem. While my experience is individual, you'll be surprised at how much the prices are compared to hotels and other accommodations in the local area. The Silver Maple Lodge and Cottages is located at 520 S US-5 in Fairlee, Vermont. They accept major credit cards when booking your reservation online, like majority of the lodging industry is these days. As far as parking goes, they have a small but sizable amount of parking slots for those who decide to stay on the property overnight. I'm pretty sure that Fairlee doesn't have a public transportation system, so best bet would be to rent a car and get here. Amtrak or greyhound May come close enough, but you'd need a rental car. Uber and Lyft operate in the area, but can be sparse when you need one on demand. The closest commercial airport would be the Manchester Boston regional airport (MHT) or the Portland Jetport in Maine (PWM). Still a good amount of driving distance to get across state lines into Vermont. Whichever the road of life takes you, you can consider this Airbnb for your stay in southeast Vermont. While the antique house is quaint and supporting the local business is paramount, my quality of sleep that night was non existent. Take this what you will. The beds are small but might fit your style. Wasn't the case with me. 3.0 stars for the overall experience. 4.0 stars for the price and location. 2.0 for the room / bedding. 4.0 stars for the limited service. Support local! C

I was half expecting the ghost of some little girl to come out of a wall singing old nursery rhymes but that is the charm of this place. I stayed upstairs at the main house and I got the deluxe room for the private bathroom feature. However the shared bathroom is right across the hall from my room haha and nobody else rented a room in this part of the structure so that was disappointing. But they took my reservation at the last minute and the purpose of my stay was fulfilled so I am a happy camper. I would def suggest this place if you need to stay in the area.

The skate trail is as wide as a two lane road. Tons of space for every level of skater. There is a rentals shop with hockey skates, figure skates, trail skates, and "support" accessories for those just learning or not super stable on skates. The trail is cleared daily, but when there is a snow storm it takes longer. The ice conditions are totally weather dependent. We've been here 3 times, one time the ice was smooth and very easy to skates on, one time we couldn't skate at all because the weather earlier in the week created slush, which then froze, and was so bumpy skating wasn't possible, and then it rained and the skate trial had 3 inches of water on it. This year, the trail opened earlier than ever (Jan 9) and this week (Feb school break) the weather was perfect for skating! Mostly smooth ice, some bumps in some spots, but easy to avoid, and it is a lake, so to be expected. The hotel is perfect for families with kids of any age. There were many multi-generations groups here together. They do lots of kid oriented things in addition to the skating (a movie theater, DJ and dance floor, ping pong, heated indoor swimming pool, billiards, a variety of games and puzzles. Free-range kids everywhere. The restaurant serves the basics. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We ate here for one dinner, and tried the Beet salad, the pork dumplings, the soft pretzels, and the Ruben sandwich...and all were good. This place is not luxury. It has a classic historical hotel feeling about it, with lots of old photos on the walls to prove it. This place is a good value in the winter. Everything you need, friendly staff, beautiful views of the lake restaurant and bar on site for breakfast, lunch and dinner so if you don't want to leave once you get here, there is no need to. I love this place!

This is my review of the exterior amenities experienced while at the Lake Morey Resort. We visited the Lake Morey Summer Concert Series, where I enjoyed wine at the Resort Clubhouse, the Lake Morey Resort Pizza Hearth special events pop-up and enjoyed a Kaleo Concert. Kaleo is an Icelandic blues rock band popular for the chart-topping hit, "Way Down We Go." The grounds of the Lake Morey Resort are like stepping in to the original set of the Land of Oz. The lush landscape, beautiful views, serene green mountains and gorgeous lit trees made my Lake Morey experience gorgeous and unforgettable. Guests come to stay at the resort for the 18-hole Vermont Open golf course, the athletic ice skating, the snow shoe hikes, trail sledding and proximity to skiing. When the conditions are right, you can ice skate on a half-mile loop, a longer 2.5 mile - or more - ice trail or stay in the local ice rink sectioned-out on the lake. I haven't tried ice skating here yet but get that you show up in the morning and experience the thrill, unsure of exactly how conditions will be other than that they are safe. Just like snow skiing/boarding. Visitors can rent ice skates and resort guests are also offered complimentary snow shoes for hikes. The resort is within an hour from 6 ski resorts. From the Lake Morey resort, you can access ample snow trails for snowmobiling. There is a whole network of clubs and chapters to consult for trails open, etc. but you can start right from the resort if you bring a sled. Does that mean bring your own snowmobile or sled? I have no idea but am guessing it needs a motor! Day passes for the resort - good for warm weather - are available for adults and kids. You can do pontoon boat tours and charters, visit their indoor pool and sauna, canoe, kayak or paddleboard. You can also charter inner tubes, waterskis and wakeboards. We experienced the VT and NH Food Truck Scene in a garden on the grounds at the Lake Morey Resort Concert Series with Icelandic blues rock group Kaleo. Visit @lakemoreyresort @officialkaleo for photos. At the Lake Morey Resort Clubhouse I enjoyed tasting an organic wine in a can from Navarro, Spain by Ah So Wines. This vintner uses a 100-year-old garnacha vine clone from the Pyrenese Mountains. It was more dry than smooth and would have been lovely with a cheese and bread plate. But, alas, it was closing time and hot dogs were only available. :) @ahsowines These are the Vermont and New Hampshire social media handles of the awesome food trucks that participated. @loadedtotz22 Loaded Tots puts everything, including poutine, on tater tots. The Box Food Truck @theboxfoodtruck is from Dartmouth College and offers standard Mexican fare and more unique options including California Burritos and Mulitas (smaller quesadillas). San Song Kitchens @san_song_kitchens offers bibimbap, fried chicken and a kimchee sampler. The Vermont Ice Palace @thevermonticepalace offers dairy-free delights of gourmet sorbetto flavors including maple. The Spicy Spoke @the_spicy_spoke offers a selection of noodle bowls plus meatballs, burrata, Mediterranean and tacos. Reklis Brewing @reklisbrewing had tacos and pretzels. Ten Bends Beer @tenbendsbeer was the draft beer available at multiple tikis along the concert-goer's trail. One vendor offered Greek fare and probably had the best selection of wine and beer. Red Kite Candy makes its delicious over cream in Bradford, VT but you can only get it in Hanover on the Dartmouth campus. Watch Jenny Blanco Tours S5 Ep7 for all of the footage.

We decided to travel to Vermont last minute for New Year's Eve. We booked the Moose Meadow Lodge on the drive up. We were welcomed with open arms. Greg showed us around the property, the lobby shop, brought us to our room and explained all the unique and exciting details of the house and property. We woke up each morning to a beautifully prepared breakfast. Since our trip was so last minute, we didn't have much of a plan. Greg was kind enough to sit down with us and help us map out our entire journey. He even helped us map an alternate route home that was more scenic. We didn't get to everything on the list, but everything he mentioned was perfect. You can tell he has a genuine love and passion for what he does. His advice and planning alone made the experience excellent. I can go on and on about the perfect stay we had. You can tell Greg and Willie are very passionate about what they do. You will never experience this kind of attention and care at a hotel. We are already planning our next stay here.

Our meal began with a flavor packed broth soup, featuring lemon, parsley, chicken and rice. The hearty portion was perfect for 3 to share. Next came the salads: baby greens with pickled onions and homemade vinaigrette, and rubbed kale with cranberries and nuts. Delicious! The swordfish main is crafted with an amazing balance of sweet blueberry sauce and a touch of cayenne to make the flavors pop. The chicken dish featured a tasty glaze and features grilled lemon, a surprise twist. Both mains were served with a veggie side and atop smashed potatoes- creamy and flavorful, and with lots of texture. Dinner was capped by the featured dessert, blueberry lemon panna cotta. So smooth, creamy, and heavenly! Just the right amount of citrusy syrup to complement the richness. Gather features fresh and local ingredients.
