Spicy tart cocktail made with mezcal, hibiscus, Serrano peppers, ginger beer and lime: In-A-Gadda....most delicious and appropriately named.

First time back to this bar since pre Covid days. Back then it was called the Chalet, then the Black Boar and now the Fable: same interior...dark wood and divey like an old world pub .And they still screen old movies here. Karaoke night tonight. Very lively crowd who are fully into the karaoke. Me still likes dis' place.

Awesome accommodating fun vibes. Wide drink selections and very cozy. The workers are super sweet. Great place for casual hangouts and parties.

    Beautiful patio out back.

I've had drinks here several times when it was The Black Boar. Wasn't too thrilled when it became Old Chalet. After I moved a new owner stepped in and now it's The Fable. A friend of mine recently came here for drinks and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd check it out. Inside is reminiscent of a dimly lit tavern. There are seats at the bar, plenty of booths for gathering with friends, a dartboard, a cozy fireplace, and classic movies on tv when sports aren't on. They also have a lovely back patio area and additional seating on the sidewalk. I sat at the bar and ordered one of their House Cocktails ($13). A dollar from each sale is donated to a local charity every month. The house cocktails have creative monikers. I selected the Town's End (Songbird floral Liqueur, St. George Vodka, Grapefruit, & lemon juice). It was refreshing and delicious! I did not expect this place to have such a creative cocktail menu (of course they serve the classics along with beer & wine too). The selections all sounded fantastic. The bartender was friendly and the vibe here is chill. The Fable also has some great deals for Happy Hour and food vendor pop ups on weekends. It's a great neighborhood bar to meet up with friends, watch some sports, or just unwind after a long day.

Comfortable patio, easy-going staff, good craft beer selection. I love the repurposed mahogany pews from a defunct church down the street.

What kind of non-alcoholic bevvies are available? Asking for a sober friend who I'd like to feel included when we go for some live music!

We've got 4 non-alcoholic beers (a Kolsch, NA Guinness, and two IPAs) and the staff is always up for making a tasty mocktail!

Silly question but do you have a billiards table?

Not a silly question! Wish we had room inside for one but we don't, sadly.

    Is there karaoke every night?

Hi Gloria! Nope, we're a neighborhood bar most nights of the week, but we do have regular karaoke every Thursday from 9pm-1:30am (except this week, we'll be closed for Thanksgiving) and rotating karaoke every Monday from 8:30pm-12:30am which…

Do you guys ever have hours where your operation is "all ages"?

Hello! We're do not. Our liquor license requires that our patrons be 21 and older during operating hours.

Is there an outdoor space? Can I bring my small dog?

There is a front patio where well-behaved dogs are always welcome. We also have a back patio and the pups can be there when it's slow and not too busy - when it gets crowded we ask that you just have them in the front space.

But...the food in the bar is definitely sub-par. I was really in the mood for the fish & chips ($25) but was very disappointed. The fish tasted doughy not at all crisp, and the fish was not fresh - had an off taste. I hadn't eaten lunch so I was really hungry & I ate it all, but not good. The fries were typical frozen out of a package & were luke warm at best. It came with cole slaw that was slimey & completely inedible - I mean AWFUL! It's a shame because the place has such character & it has a loyal following, The service is amazingly slow. I was at my table for 10 minutes before I got up & snagged a menu myself. Then, another 10 minutes before I got up again & went to the bar to order, but the barman told me that a waiter would come to my table. Many minutes later I finally ordered. My drink & my water glass were empty forever. I finally had to snag down another waiter to get another drink. I probably will come back because I love the cozy Scottish pub atmosphere, but they have a treasured gold mine here and they are squandering it for sure. No one seems to care. What a shame! It could easily be a really top notch spot. I'm giving this place 3 stars solely for the ambiance.

I have dined at this historic and iconic restaurant a number of times, invariably during DineLA…read moreweeks. When booking another DineLA res, I noticed the Tam now offers a "Walt's Table 31" lunch or dinner experience. Walt Disney's favourite table used to be by request, but the Tam now wisely monetizes the table by making it a 2-hour pre-fixe lunch or dinner experience for up to 4 people. The lunch price was just $4 more than DineLA, so I booked it. Tam O'Shanter, named after a Scottish poem, opened in 1922. It was designed by Harry Oliver, a Hollywood art and set director who also designed the Witch's House (Spadena House) in Beverly Hills. Both are done in whimsical Storybook architecture style. Levels were not used in construction, hence the lopsided/sloping appearance of some features. The Tam became the de facto Disney Studio commissary when Walt Disney and his Imagineers would often come here to eat when the Disney Studio was still nearby in Silver Lake on Hyperion (1926-1940). His regular table is a 4-top in the main dining room, next to a fireplace. The Tam has several dining rooms, plus a bar/lounge. There is a hidden speakeasy on the premises as well. The Tam was the inspiration for the design of the Snow White ride at Disneyland. It's now part of the Lawry's family of restaurants. The Walt's Table 31 experience consists of 4 courses for both lunch and dinner. You reserve and prepay on Open Table with no refunds or cancellations. We originally booked and prepaid for 2 people, but were able to add 2 more and paid onsite for these additional folks. There seem to be 2 lunch and 3 dinner spots available each day in 2-hour increments. Dinner is $20 more but portions are larger. There's a "Walt's Welcome Cocktail" available; any beverage alcoholic or not is not included. Backstories by the server and a few souvenirs (your menu, a pin, a print) are included. Plus you get a punch card for return visits; apparently the souvenirs progress the more times you come. The menu: 1) everyone gets deviled eggs, bacon-wrapped dates (aka Devils on Horseback) and pickled veggies. The eggs had a nice kick. 2) 1st course options were a Wedge Salad or the Tam's Famous Chili. The salad was huge with an abundance of bleu cheese. The chili was very nice, topped with onions and cheese. 3) 2nd course options--there were 4, but we all got either The 31 Burger (Walt's Go-To Order) or the World Famous Prime Rib (California cut). Salmon or a vegetarian dish were the other options. The burger was served open-faced on toasted sourdough, topped with bacon, Scotch Rarebit (a cheese and ale sauce) and onions, served with chili fries. The prime rib, which I assume is identical to Lawry's, was the California cut, served with mashed potatoes and gravy, creamed spinach or corn and Yorkshire pudding. Larger cuts are available. You get horseradish cream or more potent plain horseradish. 4) Dessert--C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae or English Trifle. The sundae was quite large , topped with whipped cream and peanuts, with a small pitcher of chocolate sauce alongside. The trifle was also large--cake, whipped cream and strawberries layered in a glass. Overall a delish, classic meal served in a historic fun space. That punch card may get more use!

Overall, our recent experiences have been solid. It's always great when an "old favorite" still feels like a good value. I miss some of the menu items like the lentil shepherd's pie, but we have very much enjoyed the hearty English breakfast. They also have a good selection of European beers on tap. Service has been friendly, but it is lightly staffed and pretty slow, so it's not a good place if you are in a hurry. They don't keep an eye on the patio, so if you sit out there, it's best to go inside and let them know. They also seem to have more rules than before - but I have to imagine these have come from experience. I don't think this is an ideal place to go with a large group. If it's a quiet night you might be able to pull tables together long-ways, but most tables seem ideal for 2-4. We come with our dog and sit on the patio when it isn't busy. The dog meals are massive (more food than ours eats in a whole day and she weighs 60 lbs). It's a good value, but beware if your dog is on a diet! Overall, my favorite thing is that genuinely feels like a pub, in that you can just come as you are and take your time without being rushed. A good fit for both locals and visitors in Pasadena.

My best experiences have been when I sit at the bar (alone or with friends), drinks only. Even at that, the service has rarely been stellar. Sierra Madre is the exception as far as the service is concerned. Never have had bad service there. The other 2 locations.....meh! The Old Town location is the worst as far as comfort is concerned. Super cramped and claustrophobic. No elbow room whatsoever. The other two locations aren't as tight but still need better spacing. The food here is mediocre at very best. The traditional Fish and Chips equal 3 words.....soggy, Soggy and.....SOGGY!! Crisp isn't even in their vocabulary. Both, Fish and Chips are very under-seasoned and just very disappointing and unappealing. The "Bangers and Mash" are equally disappointing. Are you serious.....deep frying the Brats to "finish them off "? The flavorless Mashed and Gravy really seal this dish as a sucker's bet. And don't get me started on the nasty frozen peas that they serve. The British Curry is the best of the traditional fare and it is barely average. Desperately in need of flavor. I go to the East Pasadena location on New Year's Eve to meet a very large group of motorcyclists for a ride, but after 3 years in a row of very disappointing breakfasts now all I do is meet them there and ride. I mean, have you ever had greasy pancakes?! And the kitchen couldn't cook an egg to order if their lives depended on it! I have to say that they do have a couple tasty Burgers though. Not what most go to an "English Pub" for but pretty much the best stuff on the menu is in burger form. The "English" is a pretty solid burger, well rounded flavors and a big seasoned and juicy patty. The "Irish" is good too. I just don't understand the Swiss Cheese, why not an Irish Cheddar?! The rest their Burgers/Sandwiches seem very uninspired, something you can get in just about every restaurant in America! Do yourself a favor and get the Steak Fries (well done) with your Burger, not the soggy homemade Fries. I went this Sunday 07/05 with some out of town guests to hit up a futbol match. They wanted to watch in a "real pub atmosphere", and had heard of Lucky Baldwins on Big Bang Theory. There was 7 of us and we arrived early enough to get a good table for the match. The place was virtually empty when we got there but filled up quickly. We all ordered our beers, then my buddies unloaded on some appetizers....5 Scotch Eggs, 2 Irish Nachos (with Steak Fries, no Tomato) and 2 Buffalo Cauliflower (1 with no sauce). Everyone Loved the Scotch Eggs, they were grub. The Grain Mustard is such a compliment. The Cauliflower was very good, with a crispy breading and very well seasoned. The Buffalo Sauce added a great kick but the Bleu Cheese Dressing was not up to par.....watery and where was the Bleu Cheese?! Our Irish Nachos were decent but came with Tomatoes (which I cannot eat). I do have to say that they do have a great variety of ale and beers. They are a little pricey though. Go for the beer, stay for the beer, be mindful of what you order!

The bartenders are friendly, attentive, and genuinely on top of things, which is a big reason we've kept coming back. Over time, we've even met some of the owners, and the place has always felt welcoming and well-run, even through ownership changes. That's why this last visit stood out and not in a good way. The bar was packed for the basketball games, and the staff was clearly hustling. Honestly, they could've used more support behind the bar for a crowd like that. Instead, one of the partners seemed to take on the role of... social host. He made sure people knew who he was, but didn't actually step in to help where it mattered. We've seen other partners jump behind the bar or run food when things get busy, so the contrast here was hard to miss. At times, it felt less like leadership and more like a running announcement tour. Meanwhile, the team that was actually working kept pushing through a packed house. The vibe took another hit with the TVs. With so many screens already locked on basketball, it didn't seem like a big ask to change just one on baseball. One of the bartenders even put it on, but a few minutes later, after a guest played into Mr. Big Shot's ego, he went and changed it right back. Just unnecessary, and honestly felt a little performative. We still like this place and really appreciate the staff who show up and do the work. But that interaction definitely left a different impression than what we've come to expect here.

Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. I ordered the chicken schnitzel with mushroom gravy, my boyfriend got the Hungarian brat with spaetzle, and our friend ordered the Hungarian brat on a roll. Starting with the schnitzel: it wasn't completely terrible, but it definitely wasn't good. The breading was some what soggy and sliding off the chicken, and the chicken itself had almost no seasoning besides an odd lemony sourness. The mashed potatoes were honestly awful -- extremely sour, like they were overloaded with sour cream but missing butter, salt, or any real flavor. I LOVE mashed potatoes and only managed two bites before giving up. The red cabbage was overcooked, mushy, and had a slightly off taste. Overall, the schnitzel plate was maybe a 2/10, and those points go solely to the fact that the chicken itself was technically edible. My boyfriend's meal somehow managed to be worse. The bratwurst was fine, but tasted frozen and reheated rather than fresh. The sauerkraut, according to him, "tasted like dirty socks." The spaetzle was genuinely offensive -- mushy, overly bland, and tossed with what looked like hydrated diced mushrooms that literally tasted like dirt. I honestly questioned whether it had gone bad. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself felt dirty and had a strange smell throughout. It honestly seems like a place locals may still visit out of habit or convenience, but it no longer reflects what I imagine it once was. It's unfortunate, because there's something special about a restaurant that's been around for 65 years and still tries to maintain its old-school charm. Sadly, the food and cleanliness just don't live up to that legacy anymore. Save your money unless you're only stopping in for an overpriced German draft beer. We definitely won't be back.

    - Broken Compass Tiki…read more My girlfriend and I absolutely loved Broken Compass Tiki. I originally found it on TikTok, followed up with a few YouTube videos, and knew I had to check it out the next time we were in Burbank. It completely lived up to the hype. Parking can be a little challenging since it's in Burbank, but we got lucky and found a street parking spot nearby. If you don't get as lucky, driving around the block or into the surrounding neighborhood should eventually turn something up. We arrived about 20 minutes after they opened, and there were already several people inside. By the time we left, the place was filling up quickly, so it's definitely a popular spot. I surprised my girlfriend by keeping the destination a secret and just telling her we were going somewhere fun with a unique theme. She loved it. From the moment we walked in, the service was outstanding. Both the bartender and our server were incredibly welcoming. Our server asked whether it was our first visit and took the time to ask what kinds of drinks we normally enjoy before making recommendations. I really appreciated that he wasn't just trying to upsell us. Instead, he explained why he thought certain cocktails were better choices based on our preferences, and every recommendation ended up being spot on. As you'd expect from a tiki bar, the cocktail menu is heavily rum-focused, but there are also non-alcoholic drinks, a small beer selection, and wine available if rum isn't your thing. I ordered the Zombie Magic first, which was delicious and definitely packed a punch. After that, I tried the 100 Year Cigar, a Scotch-based cocktail that was perfect for slowly sipping. Both drinks were fantastic. My girlfriend ordered the Painkiller and the Navy Grog, and she loved both of them. We started with the Shut It Polly wings, crispy chicken wings tossed in a spicy Thai peanut sauce, and they were outstanding. We also ordered the Aloha Dippers with the Cajun seasoning. I paired mine with the Chipotle Citrus Aioli, while my girlfriend chose the Firecracker sauce. Both dipping sauces were excellent and complemented the fries really well. For our entrées, I ordered the Pub Burger with Irish cheddar, onion strings, and horseradish aioli, cooked to order. It was excellent. My girlfriend ordered the Shrimp & Lobster Roll, and we both enjoyed it. The only item that didn't quite meet our expectations was the macaroni salad that came with our meals. We've had some incredible macaroni salad at Hawaiian restaurants, and this one just didn't quite compare. It certainly wasn't bad, but it was the one part of the meal that didn't stand out. One thing that really impressed me was how accommodating the staff was regarding my raw fruit allergy. I explained what I could and couldn't safely eat or drink, and our server took it seriously. He made sure every cocktail recommendation was safe for me without sacrificing flavor or experience. That level of attention made me feel comfortable ordering drinks I otherwise might have avoided. The décor is also worth mentioning. The pirate-themed exterior transitions into a fun pirate-and-tiki atmosphere inside that really adds to the experience without feeling overdone. Overall, this place exceeded our expectations. The drinks were strong and creative, the food was excellent, the service was some of the best we've had in a long time, and the atmosphere was a blast. There are still plenty of cocktails on the menu that I'd like to try, so we'll definitely be back the next time we're in Burbank.
