When we were in Indianapolis about a year ago, we went to an Exchange store and my husband was obsessed with it, so when we saw there were multiple in Chicago we knew wehad to go to one. They have items for all your gaming and movie/show watching needs. They have systems, games for generations of systems. On top of video games, they also lots of dvds, including collectors editions. I love dvds in the tin collectors boxes and they had plenty of them, including a cool Simpsons season 6 tin of Homers face. i want to like this store but they make it difficult. first purchase was $150 dreamcast game, came in a fake case. nbd it happens and the guy was super nice about it, they ordered me another one. this time the inserts were real but it was not the original jewel case. i just held my tongue and took it. got another $80 gamecube game from them that stopped working. again, whatever, it happens. brought it back to exchange for another copy and the guy was super dismissive. gave me a gift card and when i said i wanted another game he just sighed, typed in the computer a bunch, and told me another one was coming. i've been in customer service for a decade. i don't expect much. but this guy really made me feel like he didn't want me shopping there anymore. last game disc i bought from them was physically cracked and my console would not even load the game. so it wasn't tested... returned it to the same guy as last time. he said he ordered me another one but that was a while ago i honestly don't believe him. back to ebay :/ read more

The workers here are friendly enough, and the store has a great selection and location. I won't be shopping here though, despite my interest in their goods, because the store won't take try to help me get back my stolen stuff if the burglar tries to sell it to them--two game consoles and three games. Instead, they've offered up excuses as to why they can't help--"we won't know if the games and consoles listed are yours without serial number" (who has the serial numbers of their 15-plus-year-old nintendo ds???) and "we can only help if the police run the serial numbers". I have a police report showing what items are stolen. The odds of the five items in particular being sold together are exceedingly low. I can even point out particular things about the game saves or the system profiles to prove that these items are mine. But this store has no interest in that. read more

As a big fan of both new and retro video games, I like to pop into The Exchange to check out their selections. It is a cool little store that sells movies, music, and games. For a small shop, they have a big selection of all three. The video game section there runs from the 8-bit era (Nes/Master System) to the current generation (PS4, Xbox One, Switch). Most of their retro inventory consists of games for the more well known systems. While they might have a few Sega Saturn or Sega Cd games from time to time, usually there are none in stock. However, if you are a Nintendo, PlayStation, or Xbox collector, then this is the place for you. Prices for the games are reasonable given the current rise in prices for retro gaming. I have found several gems for very good prices shopping here over the years. My last purchase was for a complete boxed copy of Super Punch Out that was only fifteen dollars! The condition for the games can be a little hit and miss for the price they are asking. For example, they could have two copies of Kirby's Adventure for the Nes, one in good condition and one missing most of the cartridge label and both would have the same price tag. This can lead to some games being overpriced given the condition. The store itself is on the small side but, still has a lot of selections that are displayed in a well organized manner. It can get a little crowded when it's busy but, it's never been a big problem for me. The staff here are always really nice and helpful. Every time I come in I am greeted with a friendly hello. There are usually two staff members at the registers and one on the floor grabbing selections for the customers. Most of the time I don't even have to ask for help. It's like the they can sense when I am ready to make a selection! Even if there is particular item you want but they don't have it in stock, they do have the ability to check their other locations. If the location has it, they can even have it sent from that store so you don't have to travel to pick it up. All in all a nice store to check out if you are ever in Lakeview! read more

I don't know what to say about this place, but here the reason why I gave them one star. Since the release of the PlayStation 5 and X-box S I've went to this start and inquired about the PlayStation 5. I asked the 3 guys who are always in the store about the PS5 they told me they don't have any and won't be getting any in store at all. I asked can they order it for me they said no I have to go online and look in bestbuy or something. Now I know for a fact they had the X box series S/X in store. I went several times and asked about the Ps5 same answer. Then I checked back again randomly then they told me yeah they have been getting them in stock just keep checking. read more

Great place to go for unusual or mainstream CDs and DVDs. Clean and well organized. LOTS of hard to find movies, CDs, band promotional stuff and box sets. Even some vinyl in the back! Super friendly owner, gives my favorite kid a lot of attention and guidance for his mad, fabulous obsession with heavy metal music. I always pass this store on my way to and from the train. From the outside display I assumed it would be that typical helter-skelter used game shop. Was very surprised that the inside is extremely put together and organized. Everything is behind a case in a certain order and the aisles are clear and wide for roaming. Checked it out with the boyfriend a couple weekends ago. Employees were helpful - got a used Rayman game for 3DS for $8. They also have a membership card type thing. Mine was in my wallet though and my wallet got stolen, so I'll need to get another one read more

I have been a faithful customer here for over 3 years. For months on end I bought something 3-5 days a week. I've actually made a good amount of friends with the employees and we would speak every time I was there. I've spent at least 10K over those years and was at the time happy to do it. Just an hour ago the owner (short hair cut/brown, always frowning) was very rude to me. This isn't something new - he's been rude, condescending, insulting and just plain unhappy since I became a customer. I have never seen that man smile. Today I had had enough and for the first time in 3 years I stood up for myself. I have had a really bad few weeks and unfortunately said 'you are being a dick.' I've always refrained from any language, but I was struggling today. Immediately after I said it he said 'you're banned from this store, have a nice day.' I was going to apologize and tried to talk and he interrupted me each time by saying 'have a nice day, have a nice day.' I tried to say 'I've been a customer for years...' but he kept saying 'you aren't making it better for yourself by talking. I don't know what you're thinking.' He said I'll call the police and I said that's fine as I did not do anything illegal and wanted information on why I was going to be banned. I waited and the police showed up. I immediately said I'm the one he called about because I never had a problem leaving. I said my side of the story (when I asked the police if I could, the manager laughed and shook his head), got info on why he was able to do this (because it was private property and I honestly didn't know the rules) and had no problem leaving, nor did I ever. I have never seen anything like this before. I don't like the store anymore - I was called sir the moment I walked in today from a new employee bc I had a short hair cut and she assumed I was a guy without even looking at my face. The vibe there has become more and more dark and negative. I was actually trying to sell some dvds to use towards the new reckless records location just a few stores away from the L stop (looks amazing btw). Apparently if the owner doesn't like something you say or do or that embarrasses him he will ban you no matter how loyal you've been as a customer, how much money you've spent or how friendly you've been. There is no room to have a bad day or apologize. Perhaps he's in an even worse mood because reckless records is a few stores down and their store is going to go downhill very quickly. As I've learned if someone treats you this heartlessly they are the ones hurting inside and struggling in their own lives. read more

Some of the customer service workers are nice and some have attitudes. No matter how much money you spend there they cheat you with their return policies. There's always an excuse why you won't get a full refund for something you bring back even if you have a receipt they charge a ridiculous restocking fee. You pay more for movies and games but they will pay you less for trades. And they wanna be picky about what you sell back to them even if you brought it from there. read more

If you love video games and you're sick of the over-inflated prices at Gamestop, EB Games and Best Buy, this place is for you! If you want amazing prices on CDs and DVDs (all genres, including anime!), this place is for you, too! If you want to shop around for some kool toys and media center accessories at low prices, you will love it here. I am so happy I stopped in today. While shopping around for PS3 and Wii games, I found that in comparison to the the stores mentioned above, the used games are about half the cost, and the new games are priced $10 lower on average. Excellent deals!! With opportunities for great buys like this, other stores often offer only a limited or poor selection; NOT the case with The Exchange! Everything we want is here. If this is not enough to convince you to pay them a visit, then I should also mention that the layout of the shop is slick, inviting and fun to browse. Additionally, the staff is super-friendly and quite knowledgeable; helpful but not intrusive. I went here to look for some video games and browse the movies. The customer service wasn't too great. It took 10 minutes just to get someone to open one of the cases, and even then the store clerk seemed like it was a major drag, like they had something more important to do then making a sale. However, the prices are very reasonable, and sure beat any other major chain store. That's the only reason why I'm giving it two stars. read more

After spending nearly $400, I would hope that a business would have enough customer service ethic to replace defective and/or missing components. Or at least a refund. The thing I love the most about this place is the fact that its very well organized. You don't have to flip through old cd cases to find that missing cd in your collection. It always amazes me how people can try to cheat you only because of the color of your skin. Once again I go in to buy games using cash, credit and one of the employee's are trying to cheat me out of the true value of my games. I called him on it and get apologized but still was willing to try and cheat me! At this point I'm really thinking about taking legal action against this chain of stores. Pretty good location, and a very brief visit yesterday night(had been wanting badly to return to this one, after not having a chance to revisit for so long) confirmed I still enjoy this one. Decent selection, good customer service, and better used game prices for the most part than People Play Games and Videogames Etc.(Norridge). Still have to admit the selection at the Milwaukee Ave. Exchange location is a tinge better, over the Belmont one. Like what I said on my Disc Replay(Skokie) review, it's almost smart to go into this storm armed with a smartphone, and compare prices vs. other stores, Craigslist, eBay, and Amazon. I saw some prices that definitely seemed excessive, such as Zombies Ate My Neighbors on SNES for $35. I've definitely seen better prices for this game, than that! But OTOH, I've found some steals at this store that I couldn't believe how darn cheap they were, as well(i.e. Kirby's Pinball Land on GB for just $2 about 2-3 years ago). About as fun to browse as Half Price Books, minus the books aspect of HPB. read more

Awesome selection. Love anywhere I can get a vintage game from $1! After coming here I'm very tempted to purchase a super nintendo console and a gameboy. My boyfriend and I bought The Bigs for PS2 and it worked great. I currently have a PS2, Nintendo 64 and Sega so I'm definitely coming back to stock up on old games. I really like The Exchange. They have a pretty good selection on DVDs for really cheap. It is also located in a great location and is right off the Red/ Brown Line Belmont stop. Customer service is alright. They're friendly to you when you're buying rather than selling stuff. Even then, I love this place. I have not been to this store in a while. The last time was 2013. However, at the time, my experience there was really great. There are so many great DVDs, games, and CDs for really reasonable prices. I found some great, hard to find movies for cheap, all in working condition. As others have mentioned, the money they give out for game trade-ins is better than Game Stop in most cases. And they do test everything before buying, at least in the case of game consoles - I have seen them firsthand. I would definitely recommend this store to anyone and plan on returning as soon as possible. read more

This place has higher then eBay. It doesn't make since he prices they charge . I went in for something as simple as a wii remote they wanted 30+ . I found one online tested and works perfect 15 buck free shipping and wii motion plus . I don't get the prices they put on things . I've been to this location about three times within the last year and each time gets better and better. I don't remember the first time too well as I didn't stay too long, but I do remember buying a DVD or two for my dad. The next time I went, I was with my friend and she wanted to get earbuds like mine because the sound was really clear. Hers on the other hand was not good quality. She did manage to find them for $6--great deal! She was so happy! The last time I went was on my birthday a few weeks ago and I was with my mom. I was dying to buy some Gameboy games! I was definitely in for a surprise when I saw Mega Man IV for the Gameboy--a rare steal for $30! I almost cried in happy tears seeing it, but I also felt conflicted. I'd hate to spend $30 on one game, when I could buy like 5 for that price. At the same time, I know I was going to regret not buying it. When I told my mom the dilemma, she offered to split the cost so we did. :) I was quite the happy camper! :) It's in great condition and it's definitely worth the price! Other than MMIV, I got Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 3 for the Gameboy, except that didn't work so I'll have to return it, but hey--at least it gives me an excuse to go back again! ;) I wish I can come every day if I could, but I know I'll be spending all my money here and not have enough for more stuff. Holy window shopping, Batman! I seem to find myself here on every trip to Chicago and I have no problem with this. They have a fantastic selection of video games from pretty much every era, and the customer service team to help you with any questions. This is the media library I wish I had as a kid, and the nostalgia rush a few seconds after walking in was almost too much to handle. I really want to give this place more stars. I just can't. Even though they have great choices, great prices. The trade in process here is brutal. Something that could take 10 minutes at most with 4 employees working. Turned into a 45 minute process. The persons generating the trades also had to help cash people out because the other person that was suppose to help. Kept walking back and forth from the back room to the cash wrap. Went in to see what the exchange rate was, was going to ask how much they could offer for a near mint condition CIB Conkur's Bad Fur Day. The guy at the counter immediately asked if I had a question, then cut me off before I even started asking, telling me "no I really can't help you, just bring the stuff in and we'll let you know." The whole point of me stopping in was to avoid wasting all my time hauling all my games down only to turn down their quote. So I tried again and said "I was just hoping to throw an example at you to get a sense" and he again cut me off with a smile and said "there's really nothing I can do to help you." I don't understand why he would need to have the item I'm describing in his hand to be able to throw some kind of percentage or estimate at me--presuming it was in the condition I described. So I nodded, having been flatly rejected before even finishing either of my sentences, and started to leave. Another employee I guess got agitated that I was walking away without saying "great thanks so much for your help" and aggressively demanded "is there a problem?!" I would have maybe attempted to explain the problem but didn't feel like being interrupted again. So bye. read more
