Diverse crowd of all ages from 20s-60s, lots of different sorts of beer. Almost every square inch of the walls is covered with some sort of fun sticker. Comfortable, low-key extremely casual setting. The crowd for this particular evening was friendly, with a lot of people making eye contact and smiling while dancing to Rasta Rafiki. Good sound the entire evening. They book all sorts of various acts, many local, and offer "open mic" nights. Definitely recommended. read more

We were spending the night in Charleston, WV on our way from Tennessee to Michigan and decided to pop down to The Empty Glass for a drink or two before we went to our hotel for the night. I'm so glad we did! We had a ball getting to know people- there's a smoker's patio out back, and though we no longer smoke cigarettes, we decided to see what everyone was up to before the band started. Everyone we talked to was so friendly, and funny, and just kind. One drink turned into a few more, and the more we laughed the more we wanted to stay. The band was an all-female band that night who rocked. If you're in Charleston, WV, just go check this place out. The bartenders know what they're doing, and the folks hanging out there will make you feel right at home. Unless you're a snobby, pretentious asshole- then it's probably best for you to head somewhere else. read more

The Empty Glass is the staple West Virginian music venue. It's been around forever and is a bit of a Charleston legend. Home to local legends like the late Hasil Adkins and Jesco White, The Glass has live music every night of the week, which is really saying something in a place like Charleston, population 50,000. You'll find anyone of importance in the local music scene here regularly, be they 21 or 61. There are still some really cheap drink options as well. Like two bucks cheap. It has an amazing, intimate setting, and considering it's just about the only option for underground bands of any popularity level to play that can mean some really memorable performances if you catch a good act here. For some potential visitors it might be worthy to note that it is in the East End, the highest crime area of Charleston. Don't let that scare you away, just don't wander off too far by your lonesome. read more

I have been to dive bars all over the world, and i have seen live music all over the world. I can say this place could go toe to toe with any of the bars i have got my drunk on in. I had only been in Charleston for two days when i set foot in this place on a Monday night around one am. My crew and my self had already had a few adult sodas by this point, we walked to an almost empty bar besides owner Chris, manger Terry, two local punk rock kids named the "the Jeff's" playing Against Me! and Led Zepplin songs on acoustic guitar and one very local guy named Bo who knew more about fishing then I thought one could know. All of these folks were great drinking partners for the night. My friends and I are very loud talkative types, so off the bat we became buddies with owner and manger (a shot of jameson go's a long way to make friends fast). These two were very proud of there bar, and treated us as if we were long time regulars. This place has everything you need to have a good time. Cheap 24oz PBR's and LaBatt's, heavy whiskey shots, and my new favorite shot "Fireball". I plan on making this my new local watering hole while spending my time here in Charleston WV. read more

I love the glass, I like the owner, the local jams after mountain stage are bad-ass. My gripe is the bar service. Last night, our bartender was too drunk to do his job and would disappear to smoke for 15 minutes at a time with a PACKED HOUSE. It became pretty laughable and a source for some good jokes by the end of the night. read more

While this place gets props for excellent live music scene and good beer selection; still need to teach folks how to pour a proper guinness, it takes 3 pours to do it right. 4-5 stars. It is a run down dive bar that needs some serious renovation. I've been coming here for over 20 years through thick and thin and love the place but when the smell of Pine sol assails my senses as I walk in the door(I'm pretty sure I could taste it too) its time to do something about the funk you are tying to cover up. A little work on the tables and chairs wouldn't hurt, looking worn is hip/chic but a table that rocks so much you can spill your beer is not acceptable. 2 stars for the taste of pine sol in the air... Chris the owner and his staff are top notch and really eclectic folks. 5 stars again Ate there the first time last night and the food is good, bar food good. 4 stars Freshen the place up and get rid of the funk and this is a 5 star dive!!! This part of town is being revitalize and is becoming a destination for dinner and drinks and its eclectic village vibe. read more

The stage will either have local talent (out of town folk too, lol!!) doing "Open Mic," and a Gig who plays every week who brings the Freak, Funk, & Awesome out EVERY time!!!! Thank you Spurg!! ALL other nights the stage is filled with the most diverse, great, different, normal, unusual, old, new, & regular rock, old, new, & regular country, soul, funk, alternative, R&B, punk, hip-hop, rockabilly, weird, not weird, hard, not hard, wild, soft, silly, serious, from absolutely inaudible, to "that was beautiful!!" and MANY other types of Musical Genres!!! So, if the fabulous nightly musical talents don't woo you in... Maybe knowing Chris, "The Glass's First Class!!" generally tries to have all the "new" and most unusual Beers and Lagers available for his customers to indulge will entice you just enough to come on in. Plus, the kitchen's open late and they have some really tasty Pizzas and wings, etc... There is ALWAYS a Doorman here who watches outside and inside. I have honestly never felt unsafe here. If anyone would need an escort to their car, they would make sure that would happen, so "no worries!!" There are many reasons that I enjoy going to The Empty Glass. I have always felt so welcome, the staff, the owner, the patrons, and the entertainment as well, are the most down-to-earth, and friendliest people you could ever meet!!! When you walk in, they instantly greet you and make you feel like you belong. Another reason I respect The Glass.... And this may sound silly to some people... But it is one of my biggest pet peeves!!! The Glass has a Closing Time and They DO NOT Close BEFORE Closing Time!! 1 customer or 135, it doesn't matter.... They stay open.... If the Sign Says: OPEN Monday 2pm-11pm Then you can bet your sweet ass....they will be there on: MONDAY: 2pm-11pm!!!!!! I have gone to many establishments anywhere from 8:30pm, 10pm, 11pm, midnight, 1:30am, etc... Drove 10-50 miles and because they were "slow".... They closed early.... . And to add to my frustration.... A big sign on the door or lit up on the parking lot with the Bar Hours posted in BIG BLACK LETTERS to CLOSE like at 2:00AM. & I look at my clock and it's 10:40PM!!!!! LMAO!!! To me, that shows total disrespect for your customers & their time. If you're going to close early, put ?'s on your closing time. JS.... So, that's my spill... Now I guess I have to go get "My Empty Glass" refill!!! read more

It is all about being one hundred percent comfortable in your own shoes and just enjoying yourself.
