What a cute place! We walked around the bookstore, but the real pull was the cute cafe! Menu has reasonable prices ($3 cold brew? A steal!). We were thinking about the carrot cake but decided on cookies. Would've stayed for the excellent live music (8pm on a Saturday) but no seating. Happy people were there enjoying the music and giving business to this great bookstore/coffee house. Cookies were good and about 1.00(ish) a piece. Loved the vibe. Would return for sure. read more

Has great vibe that Charleston (and visitors) have loved for years! I take always visiting friends/family to Taylor's to browse around. Has huge selection of books, including children's section, delicious specialty coffees, teas, sandwiches, sweets, treats, nice wine, with live music on weekends. Has adjoining art gallery featuring pottery, jewelry, Blenko glass, paintings and pottery. Coffee Shop No. 424 Taylor Books Charleston, WV October 1, 2024 Charleston, West Virginia was just a quick layover so the hubby and I could get some rest for the night after a day of driving.. We hadn't planned on stopping so I really didn't have a coffee shop in mind. A quick search through Google Maps and I found a bookstore and coffee in one shop. Coffee and books is always a winning deal! When my husband turned down Capitol Street I definitely perked up a bit and got excited. The sidewalks are laid with bricks and trees lined the streets; there is something mesmerizing and peaceful about an urban area with tree lined streets. Right across the street from Taylor Books was a street clock and my first thought was "could it get more perfect?" The answer is YES; it could get more perfect. Taylor Books has an enormous selection of decently priced stationary and cards. Local artists' work is on display and for sale, an assortment of books that could catch just about anyone's attention, and the best part is the coffee shop. While I was sipping my delicious cortado three large pieces of artwork on the wall caught my attention; an artist painted on burlap coffee bags. I loved it! Taylor Books' location was magical, their baristas were friendly, and their cortado was well crafted. I can't think of a better pit stop on road trip! read more

The atmosphere of this place is top notch. So many books and that cozy downtown coffee shop feel. The coffee however was not great. When we went their steam wand was down so there were no hot options. Bummer, but that didn't bother me. Got an iced seasonal latte instead and wow it was WAY TOO sweet. Stopped on our way to New River Gorge, what a cute hipster spot. We felt right at home in this lovely little place, especially since it was dog friendly! We were able to shop and order coffee and quiche with my small dog in tow! It's a gift shop, book store and cafe all wrapped into one. Not a huge selection but a tasty one. They have a great barista making coffee as well. Everything is laid out nicely and even though it's on the smaller side, it's very comfortable. This wasn't my first visit and won't be my last. I had quiche (sausage) and a cappuccino (caramel) and took a scone for later on. It was all well made. Nothing dry. Everything was bursting with flavor yet not overwhelmingly. Came here because we had to wait an hour for the pies and pints. So we were at first confused on where the coffee shop was as it was apparently attached to the book store. We walked in and it reminded me of you've got mail. Small, quaint book store. Then you make a right and boom more book store with the coffee shop. The Tiramisu was delicious. Light, sweet and good. Wife got a chai tea which she said was good. And I liked it as well. We met some nice folks which we had a nice conversation with. Apparently on Saturday night they have live music. When is a bookstore not just a bookstore? Oh, when it is everything amazing in what seems like a never ending space. Nestled in the heart of downtown, it is in the perfect location. Brick sidewalk, narrow street, trees everywhere. You walk in the door thinking you've found the local bookstore. But then... You hear the whirl of an espresso shot being pulled and catch the aroma of a slice of quiche being warmed up for a customer. Café within a bookstore, nothing new. But then you glance to the left and see art on the walls. You quickly realize it's not just one or two pieces, but an entire collection. This is a gallery! But wait... There's a small theater in the back of the gallery. Local and regional films, cinema festivals, and even the option to rent it out if you so desire. So it comes as no surprise that I spent hours here. I walked the center section (where the front entrance door is located) including the back section, which houses discount books. I went over the gallery, where the art is for viewing but also for sale. Also saw some beautiful handmade wallpaper (available by the roll). I saved the café for last, as I am not one for hot dark liquid around books or art. Though Americano is my first visit go to, I needed the full strength stuff. I ordered a cup (regional roastery) and a scone. Gotta have my sweets. Was it delicious? Well let me just say that the next morning I was there for another cup and a croissant. I did order a seasonal latte as well (feeling frisky or something) that was perfectly balanced in flavor and espresso to milk ratios. I did find a couple of books and stickers to take home with me as well as a new favor spot in Charleston (WV) if I ever return. If you are in the area, I recommend stopping in (and blocking out your schedule for the rest of the day). read more

I absolutely loved my coffee, the coffeeshop kinda vibe, but I was harassed twice by random people who were struggling who came in to get warm. The service, for the most part, was awesome, but there was one worker in particular who was just alright, but usually the workers are exceptionally nice. Great spot in the heart of downtown Charleston, WV! Needed a place to work remotely, and this one did the job. It's super cozy in there with enough people coming and going but quiet enough to take meeting calls in if needed. They also played good music that wasn't too loud as well. Baristas are super nice. Limited outlets but still a few spots with one. It's a really cool combo of a coffee shop + book store + museum. We also got a sugar free coconut cappuccino which was great! Few baked items to choose from: two flavors of scones and 1 muffin. The cranberry scone was just ok. Lots of books to choose from and items to look at. Kids section was great, my little ones enjoy picking up books and toys and gazing through the shelves. Two sections of books/art; the kids section is in the coffee side back near the bathrooms (heads up you need to ask for a code from barista in order to use restroom. I visited town for a 30-day project. TAYLOR BOOKS was one of the best parts of my time here. I would have not survived without their coffee. Huge variety of drinks and flavors. I visited about 4-5 times a week and placed multiple orders to take back to work and not a single time they got the order wrong. The staff is extremely friendly and the place is charming. Parking might be a little hard to come across because it's located on a busy street surrounded with other restaurants but park a couple of blocks out and the walk is worth it. In addition, their little shop is very cute, not only the books, but the artisanal products. I ended up buying a locally made cheese board as a gift for my husband and he loves it. Perfection. What a sweet spot for books, coffee and? The best coffeehouse scone I've ever tasted. And if you're one of those people who think scones are dry thuds, trust me - they aren't if they are made right. My scone was fresh and soft with lots of fat blueberries. I got the regular coffee (Their daily roast was an Ethiopian) and it was just as coffee should be: smooth rich and strong. The service was great kind efficient friendly. They had plenty of signs enforcing mask use both at the front door and at the coffee bar which I really appreciated. Everyone in the shop was wearing a mask. Tables in the coffee shop were 6 feet apart so you can take your mask off while you were seated which I felt comfortable doing considering there were only a few people there on a Thursday morning at 9:30 AM. All in all this was an exceptional experience in a cool old building in downtown Charleston! if you're in the area and need a card, a book, a puzzle, coffee or a fabulous scone, I highly recommend recommend! read more

I visited this shop today for a ceramics class. I'm so happy I found it advertised online. After class I had lunch upstairs and browsed their book selection. Taylor's was always a favorite spot pre-pandemic, but over the last year+ of spending more time at home, I haven't visited nearly as much. When I popped in today, it was a like going home. This local treasure is full of good memories, great finds, a stellar staff, and delicious treats. It was a great reminder of how wonderful it is to buy locally and what wonderful things you can find off the beaten path. The folx at the counter today were super helpful, answering my annoying questions with kindness and smiles, making me feel like a friend and not just a customer (sorry for not catching your name--blonde ponytail, fantastic skirt--but you were a delight). Visiting Charleston by train, this was an easy 15 minute walk from the train station! The vibe is super cool inside. Books everywhere, even in the coffee shop, and an art gallery to boot! Plenty of used and affordable book options as well as new. Sitting at the edge of the bar I can see gorgeous vintage string lights adorning the street outside. The service was quick and friendly and they have free WiFi! Plenty of seating and if I lived here I would appreciate that the acoustics are nice even when it gets busy. Unfortunately my bagel and latte were a little bland. That's what kept it from being 5 stars for me! I did watch a woman bring in 3 beautiful homemade cakes - love when local supports local!
