Remember, the entire state of West Virginia only has a population of approx 1.2 million people, so the paper certainly couldn't exist if it covered a smaller region. The rag was such an awesome magazine back in the nineties. However, like many print periodicals, it struggled with the internet explosion. Being in WV, a place with sparse entertainment and little news outside of more meth busts, Graffiti was in danger of going under. As a result, it got sold off. The former producers said (I'm paraphrasing) that they felt it was what was best for the magazine's future, and they may have been right. Be that as it may, I found it largely unreadable under the new ownership. There was a serious decline in content quality and I feel like WV is basically devoid of a printed cultural resource as a result. A shame, really.

In fact, South Charleston itself is a delight with all sorts of quirky little businesses and historical sights. The service by real book enthusiasts is endlessly gracious, and the various discounts (particularly for the overnight guests who have a full run of the place from 6 PM til 10 AM) are of real value. Just across the street is a reasonably breakfast and lunch place where EVERYTHING is homemade and run to support a local charity.

What a cute place! We walked around the bookstore, but the real pull was the cute cafe! Menu has…read morereasonable prices ($3 cold brew? A steal!). We were thinking about the carrot cake but decided on cookies. Would've stayed for the excellent live music (8pm on a Saturday) but no seating. Happy people were there enjoying the music and giving business to this great bookstore/coffee house. Cookies were good and about 1.00(ish) a piece. Loved the vibe. Would return for sure.
