Uneventful, unnecessary jam on top of cold untoasted sourdough bread, Over cooked eggs lacking freshness and flavor. The lettuce was fresh and welcome crunch. Tough to cut, much less enjoy. All thanks to the power of Yelp, I happened upon Cafe Appalachia on my way through West Virginia. This is a breakfast / brunch restaurant, coffee shop and place to hang out. It's beautiful, inside and out, with a lovely, lush garden outside where you can sit and eat outdoors. Inside, there are comfy couches, tables with mis-matched chairs, thrift store knickknacks, and motivating mottos everywhere. I wasn't able to stay and enjoy the ambiance, because I had to get back on the road. But I popped in for a to-go cup of coffee and a pastry. I visited shortly after they opened, and unfortunately, they were already out of almost all of the baked goods on their menu. (Or they just weren't stocked yet? Either way, the cupboard was bare.) All they had were some cookies, so I got a peanut butter cookie. It was good, but I was envisioning drinking my coffee with some other sweet than a cookie, especially because it was 8 in the morning. They also didn't have any breakfast sandwiches available, they said, which was a bummer because I was going to get one of those, too. Oh well. The coffee and cookie that I ended up getting were good, but I just wish I could have enjoyed Cafe Appalachia properly! Maybe visiting right when they open in the morning isn't a good idea. Definitely get the "special sauce" which was a lemon aioli. The parfait was excellent and the fruit in it (strawberries and blueberries) were perfect. The zucchini bread was light, fluffy and very cinnamon-y. Delicious. The only disappointing food was what hubs got. The omelette was okay, a little on the dry side. The grits were down right terrible. They were barely warm and the cheese shreds were still intact. I gave it a 4 because I like what they are doing and 3/4 of the food was fantastic. read more

This is the second cafe I've been to in a week whose premise is to offer a place of employment for people in recovery from substance use problems (although this one states it is for women; I don't know where the men go). This is simultaneously an excellent business model that I am happy to support and a sad commentary on the ubiquity of the issue. This place offers simple brunch fare in a splendid atmosphere. A cavernous indoor space that looks like a former church gives way to an outdoor garden, with a gardener actively working during my visit. I had a waffle and a strawberry salad. Nothing fancy, but the waffle crisped nicely and the salad offered a brightness of flavor to match the atmosphere. I was squeezing in a Zoom meeting for most of my visit, and while I wish I'd had more time to pay attention to the garden, I definitely would like to do all my meetings in such a setting. read more

We were looking for breakfast while in town and found this Cafe on Yelp, and liked their cause so we decided to give it a try. The building is very cute and the inside is charming. Very limited menu so I ended up ordering a breakfast sandwich. I got a half sandwich, which was one large piece of bread, with one egg cooked the way I liked and then topped with a piece of spinach and tomato. I paid extra for cheese. You take a seat and they bring it out to you. We didn't wait long for our food, and I forgot to take a picture, but it would have been good for other Yelpers to see. The piece of toast was barely toasted and there was nothing on it, so it was dry. The egg was fine, but they forgot the cheese. I hate to make a fuss, so I didn't say anything. We didn't have much luck finding a place to eat brunch/breakfast (really anything) on a random Saturday while in town for a concert. One place was closed - on a Saturday. We were perplexed! Cafe Appalachia wasn't exactly nearby but seemed to be a good Plan B. We were SO happy the first one didn't work out. This was the perfect spot for us. It was in a beautiful old church with random yet adorable furniture that fit it so perfectly. We couldn't decide whether to sit inside or out, but it was a beautiful day so we sat in the sun on the little deck among the garden. We got simple food that was simply tasty. It hit the spot. The fact that we were supporting a non-profit run by a few local various missions, including a recovery center (which is dear to my heart because my son was once in recovery) made everything that much brighter and tastier. It felt good to enjoy the sun and a quiet brunch with a friend that knew how important this place must be to someone like me. I felt like my angel son steered us to this place and we were not disappointed. The coffee was comforting, too. We loved everything about it and wish we had something like that in our town - I'd love to go there on weekends to drink my coffee and read and relax on their cool sofas! An oasis, for sure. We had heard of Cheryl Laws and the good work she and her team are doing in helping reintegrate rehabilitated women with addictions by providing a place to learn new skills, gain confidence and build new lives for themselves. On our visit to Charleston, WV, we stopped by to see for ourselves. We didn't know what to expect when we walked into Cafe Appalachia for lunch but we were very pleasantly surprised to find a lovely cafe restaurant set up in an old church. Mismatching sets of tables and chairs filled the room, immediately making you feel at home. A cheery and friendly greeting from the ladies behind the counter made you feel welcome and they invited us to come in, and come on up to the counter, which we did. Lunch is a set menu daily and you have the option of choosing a large plate ($10) and a small plate ($8). My husband and I chose a large for him and a small for me and we were both more than satisfied. Lunch consisted of a fresh, crisp spinach salad with goat cheese, tomatoes and a balsamic drizzle. Our meal was a different and delicious Bavarian sausage and apple hash, tasty potato corn chowder and fresh fruit. Everything was fresh and plentiful. And friendly Amber behind the counter made a delicious decaffeinated mocha coffee upon my request that was a great way to finish up our meal. The facility was immaculate and everyone was friendly, smiling and welcoming. I would definitely recommend visiting Cafe Appalachia for a nice lunch (or breakfast) the next time you're in town.
