Your appointment could be at 9 am, but you won't see your Doctor for another 90 minutes. Their glasses shop has a nice selection, but they don't really help you find a pair that fits your face. I bought a pair of glasses there my first year and they were a bit big for my face, and I had to bring them back because they kept sliding off my nose. What prompted me to return to my old Doctor though was their billing. They sub their billing out to a company called Patient Bill Help. In October, I received a text from Patient Bill Help stating I owed $63.75, which I paid online. Two days later I realized I should not have owned anything, and I have been trying to get this resolved for three months. The individual(s) that handles the billing at North Park make assumptions on eye insurance. I had a few conversations with someone local in that office where they argued with me on what my insurance covered, this is even after my insurance company explained to them that I was 100% covered for both eye and contact lenses. The conversations were, literally, "eye insurance doesn't cover both contacts and glasses" and me informing them that yes, mine does, all they have to do is scroll down their screen to see (this has been confirmed multiple times by VSP representatives. The office never scrolled further down my EOB to see I was covered for both). I am now at the point I told Patient Bill Help and my eye insurance that I would suck up my lost of $63.75 as a lesson learned. If you don't mind long waits, get you glasses elsewhere, and have "standard" or no eye insurance, this place might work out for you. If you have premium eye insurance, or are use to getting retinal scans each year (I was never offered them at North Park) I recommend going elsewhere.

My exam was fine, prescription had not changed, I was told by the billing they charged it medical because I have cataracts (which had last few years) Billing told me they charged medical insurance this time because sometime, in the future, I may need surgery, so there would be a record of it. I had an appointment for 2:30 PM, and the receptionist called me at 1:30 PM to show up "right now." I hurried to the office. When I arrived, the physician was seeing one patient, and two other patients were waiting in the waiting room. Why did the receptionist tell me to come in early?! The doctor was ready to see me at 2:40 PM, and he examined me until 3:20 PM. He thoroughly explained how my eyes have thin retinas that I must monitor into old age to ensure that blood vessels do not grow and cause leakage and vision loss. He gave me an Amsler Grid on paper and on a convenient refrigerator magnet, so I can monitor my vision at home. The receptionist said that I had no copayment. I overheard her tell two other customers that they had to pay with either cash or check, because the office does not accept credit cards, so if you have a copayment, then you want to make sure that you bring sufficient cash or a check. Overall, I feel relieved that the physician examined my eyes and determined that my vision is OK for now.

Before the surgery the vision in my left eye was near perfect. After the surgery I became nearsighted. Objects became very blurry within 15 feet. Also, a blood vessel was broken in my left eye. Upon office visits after the surgery I was lied to by Dr. Karlik that my vision was bad beforehand. A total falsehood. I now have to wear corrective eyewear because of his botched surgery. I was also advised by an employee of the Pgh. V.A. that a relative visited Karliks office for an eye checkup and was told that they had cataracts. After seeking a second opinion it was determined that their diagnosis was faulty. The patient did not have cataracts. Please beware of North Hills Eye Associates Karlik Ophthalmology. She was a gem and probably took down and put back close to 100 pairs of glasses for my son to try on. Today I visited the store because a lens popped out. There were no customers in the store. I was told that there was no technician on duty and that I'd have to come back tomorrow. It does not take a technician to stick a lens back in a frame. Anyone who has worked in an eyeglass shop for more than 10 minutes should be able to put a lens back in an eyeglass frame. The woman on duty, chronically unhelpful, could have spent a minute to keep a customer. Instead, she couldn't be bothered. Beware of Eyeglass World.
