I switched eye doctors in 2020 and was a patient at North Park for two years. The complaints about their wait times are true. Your appointment could be at 9 am, but you won't see your Doctor for another 90 minutes. Their glasses shop has a nice selection, but they don't really help you find a pair that fits your face. I bought a pair of glasses there my first year and they were a bit big for my face, and I had to bring them back because they kept sliding off my nose. What prompted me to return to my old Doctor though was their billing. They sub their billing out to a company called Patient Bill Help. In October, I received a text from Patient Bill Help stating I owed $63.75, which I paid online. Two days later I realized I should not have owned anything, and I have been trying to get this resolved for three months. The individual(s) that handles the billing at North Park make assumptions on eye insurance. I had a few conversations with someone local in that office where they argued with me on what my insurance covered, this is even after my insurance company explained to them that I was 100% covered for both eye and contact lenses. The conversations were, literally, "eye insurance doesn't cover both contacts and glasses" and me informing them that yes, mine does, all they have to do is scroll down their screen to see (this has been confirmed multiple times by VSP representatives. The office never scrolled further down my EOB to see I was covered for both). I am now at the point I told Patient Bill Help and my eye insurance that I would suck up my lost of $63.75 as a lesson learned. If you don't mind long waits, get you glasses elsewhere, and have "standard" or no eye insurance, this place might work out for you. If you have premium eye insurance, or are use to getting retinal scans each year (I was never offered them at North Park) I recommend going elsewhere. read more

Front office staff is very unfriendly and waited in the exam chair for over an hour before seeing the doctor which then he only spent 10 minutes. referred to another specialist and they were to make the appointment with them and to date haven't done so. read more

I called for my wife and said, "My wife would like an appointment." The person taking my call answered, "Your WIFE would like to make an appointment?" The implication was clear -- why was I calling for my wife? Well, my wife asked me to make the call. So I made it clearer for the person on the other end of the call, "I'm calling to make an appointment for my wife." She said, "Ah," with a heavy dose of sarcasm. And then I hung up. Because really, life is too short to deal with people who answer the phone like this at a medical office. We all have bad days, but there are training opportunities and behavioral-modification therapeutic approaches to help people perform more professionally when their bad day ends up affecting their organization's ability to get new clients. read more

During my short year in Pittsburgh, I went to Dr. Holly Parlavecchio after a friend's recommendation. She's a great optometrist and super-easy to talk to. From what I've heard, she's also great with children. I really wish there was another Dr. Holly in the Bay Area. read more

Being that I currently don't have health insurance and needed an eye exam, I needed to find a place that offered the cheapest basic eye exam. They charge $85 when every other place I called wanted to charge me well over $100. Easy parking. Dr. Holly was great. She was very knowledgeable and had good people skills.. she seemed interested in me as a person and not just my eyes. I felt like I got a good exam. Including paperwork and having my eyes dialated (takes 10 minutes to kick in) I was in and out of there in 50 minutes. Not bad! I'm going to make Dr. Holly my permanent eye doctor. read more

Still seeing Dr. Taylor and I couldn't be happier with the service I am getting here. A couple things for new comers to keep in mind is that (at least with Dr Taylor) if you're time-constraint is tight you'll want a first-in visit time. I've noticed that on a couple occasions as the day progresses her schedule becomes very hectic and sometimes it lags behind. While I wouldn't find this acceptable for general eye appointments, I feel that it is ok for those of us who have more concerning needs like glaucoma, etc. The longest I've waited total from arriving to departure was 2.5 hours, and on that day she had a couple emergencies come up (she's an eye surgeon too!) so while some of the other patients got rather cranky, I knew eventually I'd get to see her and she wouldn't rush me just because she was behind. read more

Be prepared to call way in advance - you have to book 2 years in advance for a refraction. The waiting room wait is out of control. This practice appears to focus on the elderly (cataracts & glaucoma) and to have an elder wait in the office 2-3 hours for an exam is not reasonable. They take you to a 2nd waiting room (very small and not even any music to help pass the time) and you think you are getting somewhere. You aren't. They will do a preliminary exam and then send you back to the small waiting room for another long wait. Dr. Taylor is very good but the wait is entirely too long. read more

My first visit to North Park Ophthalmology will be my last. My appointment was at 9:40 AM. I arrived at 9:30 to fill out paperwork. At 10:45 I still hadn't seen the doctor so I went up to the desk and asked them to confirm my appointment was in fact at 9:40. She confirmed it was and then went to check how much longer it would be. There were still 2 people in front of me that would go back to the exam room on top of those who were already in exam rooms who still hadn't seen the doctor. I could have easily been there another hour. It was totally ignorant of this office to disrespect my time. What makes them think their time is more valuable than mine? They asked me if I wanted to reschedule and I asked if I would have to wait an hour and a half and they said it was possible because Dr. Taylor usually runs behind. Obviously they need to allow more time in between patients when scheduling. It is completely unacceptable to make someone wait that long. read more

Dr Taylor was professional and I have no doubt she is very competent. She took the time to explain to me what was going on with my eyes and gave me opportunity to ask her questions which I didn't really have any. As another reviewer had stated, be prepared to be there for a LONG time. From the time I arrived to the time I left, it took 2 hrs and 15 mins to check in, wait, pre-screen, wait, initial exam & dilation, wait, complete exam, and check out. There was an endless stream of people coming and going in the place. Other reviewers had issues with the people on the phone, but my experience was just the opposite. The lady I spoke with was super nice and held a next day opening for me until I was able to reschedule a meeting at work. There was at least 5 people working behind the counter and I have no idea if any or all of them does the scheduling. read more

They need to get rid of the lady at the front desk. She is more than just lacking in good customer service skills; she is just plain rude. I called for an eye appointment and was immediately placed on hold for ten minutes with no kindness. Extremely long --- unacceptably long wait for my first visit. Over two hours. Normally, I am patient with doctors for a one time lateness, but all of the veteran patients around me indicated that this was standard at this office. When Dr. Rumpf came in, there were no apologies for the wait. At the end of the visit he said something like "I NEED for you to participate in this online program we have" (don't remember what it was... something to do with quality control). Normally this would be fine with me, but he also started complaining about how hard it was to get his older patients to use technology that would make things easier for the office. I felt that showed a lack of compassion and understanding for his patients, and that everything was about him and the office... A true lack of "bedside" manner in the whole office. I missed my appointment this year, and received a cold phone call that said "You MUST reschedule as soon as possible". I will be contacting other ophthalmologists. My time is just as valuable as yours and if you came to my law office to see me, it would be FAR from acceptable to make you wait for over two hours from the time of your appointment. read more
