I switched eye doctors in 2020 and was a patient at North Park for two years. The complaints about…read moretheir wait times are true. Your appointment could be at 9 am, but you won't see your Doctor for another 90 minutes. Their glasses shop has a nice selection, but they don't really help you find a pair that fits your face. I bought a pair of glasses there my first year and they were a bit big for my face, and I had to bring them back because they kept sliding off my nose. What prompted me to return to my old Doctor though was their billing. They sub their billing out to a company called Patient Bill Help. In October, I received a text from Patient Bill Help stating I owed $63.75, which I paid online. Two days later I realized I should not have owned anything, and I have been trying to get this resolved for three months. The individual(s) that handles the billing at North Park make assumptions on eye insurance. I had a few conversations with someone local in that office where they argued with me on what my insurance covered, this is even after my insurance company explained to them that I was 100% covered for both eye and contact lenses. The conversations were, literally, "eye insurance doesn't cover both contacts and glasses" and me informing them that yes, mine does, all they have to do is scroll down their screen to see (this has been confirmed multiple times by VSP representatives. The office never scrolled further down my EOB to see I was covered for both). I am now at the point I told Patient Bill Help and my eye insurance that I would suck up my lost of $63.75 as a lesson learned. If you don't mind long waits, get you glasses elsewhere, and have "standard" or no eye insurance, this place might work out for you. If you have premium eye insurance, or are use to getting retinal scans each year (I was never offered them at North Park) I recommend going elsewhere.

I had an appointment for 2:30 PM, and the receptionist called me at 1:30 PM to show up "right now." I hurried to the office. When I arrived, the physician was seeing one patient, and two other patients were waiting in the waiting room. Why did the receptionist tell me to come in early?! The doctor was ready to see me at 2:40 PM, and he examined me until 3:20 PM. He thoroughly explained how my eyes have thin retinas that I must monitor into old age to ensure that blood vessels do not grow and cause leakage and vision loss. He gave me an Amsler Grid on paper and on a convenient refrigerator magnet, so I can monitor my vision at home. The receptionist said that I had no copayment. I overheard her tell two other customers that they had to pay with either cash or check, because the office does not accept credit cards, so if you have a copayment, then you want to make sure that you bring sufficient cash or a check. Overall, I feel relieved that the physician examined my eyes and determined that my vision is OK for now.

I've been going there annually since moving to PGH & have not had any negative experiences. One…read morething that did change after two years was that my final exam was initially done by an opthamologist & that changed to an optomotrist after the first two years, but for me that's fine. The thing I appreciate most is that they start appointments on-time & seem to do a thorough job. A vision technician does the preliminary things & then the optomotrist finishes & writes a prescription for glasses. With my insurance, there's no out-of-pocket cost for this exam, but I'm sure that wouldn't be the case for everyone. They also sell/make glasses, which seem pricey, but I feel to be of high quality.

I worked with the optometrist to get two new pairs of glasses, and she informed me that my…read moreinsurance would cover both frames with a $25 copay each, which I agreed to. However, I was charged $75. When I asked for an explanation, she told me in detail that an extra $25 charge would be removed because she had accidentally run two separate transactions on my card. Later that day, after I had already left the office, she called to tell me she had made a mistake. She explained that I actually owed an additional $25 because she had forgotten to charge me for the second frame, and that the extra $25 I had originally questioned was for a different fee. I explained that if I had been given the correct information while I was still in the office, I likely would not have purchased the second frame. Since the confusion was caused by their mistake--and I had specifically asked for a detailed explanation of the charges--I felt it would have been appropriate for the office to waive the additional fee. Instead, I was told, "You can bring the frames back if you don't want to pay the fee." I found the situation to be unprofessional. If you don't want to receive unexpected phone calls after leaving the office about additional charges that were not clearly explained beforehand, I would recommend avoiding this office.

The techs and Dr. Lorenz were efficient, professional, and kind, chatting with me and keeping me informed throughout the exam. Their care transformed an appointment I was dreading (I'd not had an eye exam in decades) into a pleasant, informative experience in a lovely setting. I highly recommend McCauley Celin Eyecare Associates.
