This is a great place for birthdays or wanting to enjoy a FUN weekend out for brunch! My friend and I came for brunch on a Saturday, we did make reservations otherwise we would've had to wait a while. They had a live DJ that day, which really helped hype up everyone after a few drinks, he played great music. Both brunch items we got were delicious and big portions so you won't stay hungry. The drinks were strong as well and very well made. The service can be a bit slow, however it was just 2 of us and there were bigger groups which I noticed they were catered to often, so it's understandable. Visited here and had an absolutely divine dinner that included some amazing dishes from their recent menu. Started with a welcome shot, compliments of our server. Then I got an old fashioned that was perfectly balanced-- not too sweet and the citrus complimented the drink perfectly. For appetizers we got bbq wings that were perfectly crispy yet sauced. The serving was plenty to share between two people. For entrees, we shared a lobster roll which was delicious. I don't enjoy rolls that have too much mayo but this was the perfect amount of dressing to lobster ratio and super well seasoned. It came on a buttery, toasted roll that made eating it both easy and delicious. We also got the surf n turf to share with a perfectly cooked and seasoned steak and succulent shrimp. The two entrees were definitely nice to share and very filling. Despite being full, we made a smidge of room for dessert and got the chocolate tart. Super rich and beautifully plated and another item that was perfect for two to share. Duplex is one of the worst restaurants we have been to in Logan square. They messed up my order twice. I got chicken salad and I asked for no nuts. I have a nut allergy and told them about it yet they put some nuts on the salad. So I had to take it back and then they gave it to me without chicken. I paid $8 extra for the chicken so I had to take it back and yell at them. They finally got the order right but they didn't apologize and said they were short staffed. NO EXCUSE. They also add extra for tip without telling us. I'm NEVER going back and I highly do NOT recommend this restaurant. Terrible service and overpriced. read more

The Duplex has been on my list for a while, so I am glad we finally checked it out. Unfortunately, I must admit that it was a big letdown for me. The overall concept is really intriguing - 2 rotating chef concepts on 1 menu. Tonight's menu was a combination of BBQ and Thai. They also had a Black Restaurant Week menu that the host and server heavily promoted - perhaps we should have opted for that instead, but we wanted to try a bit of everything. Here is a summary of what we have: Drinks: The started us off with a coupe of Welcome Shots. Very nice touch! I think it was a lemon drop. They were very good. After, we enjoyed the "Smokin Azz Tea" (bourbon-based) and the Sensual Negroni (empress gin-based). Without a doubt, the drinks were the best part of our meal. Both were delicious. The Sensual Negroni was herbaceous and almost tasted like it had mulling spices in it - so good! Starters: We tried the Wok Nuts - fried peanuts with kale, lime, and chili. The description sounded good, but honestly, they just tasted like burnt peanuts. We may have eaten 5 tops. We asked them to swap they out for the Fried Pickles instead. Though incredibly salty, I can say we enjoyed the few that we were able to eat (I mean, they were incredibly salty). Entrees: We ordered the Poutine Tots with pulled short rib and the Brisket Grilled Cheese. The meat on both entrees was tender, but everything lacked seasoning. The tots had a Caroline sauce on them, but not enough to make a difference. Maybe more of that sauce would have provided the seasoning I needed. Plus, the tots were room temp at best. I asked them to heat up my dish. They said the kitchen would remake it, which I appreciated, but when the new dish came, it still was not hot! I will say that I threw the leftover Brisket Grilled Cheese in the air fryer when I got home, and it was delicious. Sides: I told you we wanted to try a bit of everything LOL. We had no idea the sides were so huge - they can feed like 3-4 people! We sampled the Dirty Rice, Smokin Bourbon Peach Baked Beans, and the Mac-N-Cheese. The rice was not hot at all. Again, we asked for something to be warmed up, and again it returned to the table lukewarm at best. We put some of the baked beans on top of the rice, and that was a good combo. I did not really enjoy the peaches in the beans though - the 2 textures were weird together, but the dish overall had good flavor. The macaroni was the biggest disappointment. It was very soupy. Found this place on Tik ToK. We didn't have to ask, we knew by the way we sat for 15min with no drinks gratuity was added. We did eventually get coffee but had the flag down a waitress to get refills. After we ordered the food came but we got no condiments. Usually they ask do u need hot sauce or something but no I had to flag down the waitress to get that which took another 15 minutes to come. Great now I get hot sauce , with cold food. Which was $1.00 for a tablespoon size. Meanwhile my boyfriend who did get his food got rotten potatoes. Pros: The vibe (music was on point, beautiful diverse crowd) Service was top notch Chicken & Donuts was different, but good. The chicken was seasoned to perfection! The donuts were just ok for me. It made the dish unnecessarily sweet. Cons: Parking - like most restaurants in Chicago Price - it's not that Duplex prices are outrageously high, it's more so cost vs value. $24 for a chicken thigh and two donuts is a little heavy. The Duplex is a unique but good restaurant with an eclectic design and menu. The cocktails were delicious- I had the margarita and limoncello spritz; I'd highly recommend coming here for drinks. The menu is... odd in that they offer Italian, Mexican, and traditional American food but about 90% of the menu (online menu) was devoted to alcohol. I had the meatballs (highly recommend), truffle cheese stick (it was ok / can be skipped), and carbonara (I would try something else next time). The service staff were all super professional, friendly, and good at their jobs. I'd highly recommend Duplex for the bar and cocktails. I've been wanting to to check this place out for a long time so I finally made a reservation for brunch. It was a beautiful day, so we decided to eat outside which was lovely except for the bees everywhere! Not their fault, it's that time of year, but keep it in mind because it's an issue. We ultimately moved inside which they happily accommodated. Boy, what a meal! I haven't been that full in a long time. We got several dishes to share and some drinks, all of which came out in a very reasonable amount of time. The heavy on the cognac was very nice, I'd have liked more flavor from the banana syrup to balance it but I'd recommend it all the same. The bloody Mary was missing bacon, but also enjoyed. The star player today was the shrimp and grits. Perfect texture on the grits and the shrimp flavor was excellent. The pancakes needed something light or sweeter to balance how heavy they are, they online menu said it came with ice cream but we didn't get any. Not sure if that was an error or something from last season but I think that would have helped a bit. The coffee cake beignets had really great flavor but texturally, they were a bit off. Too bready and less doughnut like. The potatachos (loaded breakfast potatoes with Mexican inspired toppings) were amazing. It was presented with everything spread out but I think it should just be loaded up like loaded fries for easy eating. Presentation aside I loved the cheese sauce and chorizo but the jalapeño should be chopped smaller. No one really wants a full slice of raw jalapeño in a single bite. Breakfast sausage patties were spot on, definitely loved those. Staff were great. Friendly and attentive. Also helpful, we moved inside halfway through our meal with no complaints or issues and split the check last minute. Accommodating from start to finish. From the looks of it on a Sunday evening, it didn't look promising, as the place was dead inside, but the small outdoor seating area was almost full. It's good that we didn't judge a book by its cover, because this is a really nice restaurant. My party was getting chilly, so we opted for indoor seating, which was very nice and our server, albeit busy (she might have been the only server), was personable and friendly. Most of the dishes we ordered looked small in quantity, but was mighty in richness and flavor. The crab cake dip had a bit more spice than expected but was really good, and the lemon pappardelle entree had the perfect amount of sauce so that the ingredients weren't drenched in it; the other members of my party also felt the same about their respective pasta dishes. My husband ordered the lobster roll and didn't like it due to too much bread and not enough lobster, and didn't feel that the dressings/toppings atop the sandwich added any flavor. This was my third visit to Duplex. I love this area and they are a solid place for drinks and food. So this establishment houses two separate restaurants at a time. They have a floating restaurant concept so nothing ever gets too old in regards to menu offerings. The vibe here is always chill. The music is good but not loud. The staff are friendly. They have specials depending on what day of the week you pop in. Food: I loved the 2 Korean girls menu. I very much enjoyed the korean friend chicken. The bowls were good but I could used more flame heat for my dish. I really love hot food so when my bowl came out lukewarm...kinda bummed. Space Cowboys french fries were yum. Both these kitchens have now rotated off the menu. Offering as of 5.12.22 for food: Currently there is Kalista (Mediterranean flavor profile) and Chachuates (Latin flavor profile). I chose this place for dinner based on the Kalista menu. I really enjoy this type of food. We ordered Lamb Bowl (Braised Lamb, lentils, goat cheese, avocado sauce, cucumber relish and butter rice), Steak Bowl (Ribeye, creamy coleslaw, halloumi cheese, cucumber relish and butter rice), and Greek Fries. Bowls were 5 out of 5 stars. Greek fries could of been hotter, plus feta crumbles were too big. I think the feta needs to be smaller in size but not in portion. Drinks we had Old Fashion which were on special for Thursday at only $7 a drink. Definitely an added bonus. All in all very nice place. I will be back. Only irritating thing is the Toast app. I like the concept. I don't mind the 20% tip included. The service here was good. However, the way Toast app ask you to pay your ticket is deceiving. I ended up paying 40% in gratuity. They have your bill, add tip, then taxes, then ask you about a tip. So not thinking and being slightly intoxicated I added another tip. Really soured my experience. The Duplex is an unfortunate missed opportunity. Aesthetically it's decent for dinner, and the music level was just right... energetic but we could talk to each other. Based on other reviews complaining about noise level, we got lucky. No DJ in sight. But the entire experience was brought down from the beginning by the lack of menus. Nobody should accept this at a sit-down dinner restaurant. Plastic stands with QR codes on them are trashy and disrespectful. Even my teenage nephew, who spends every free minute on his phone, called this out as unacceptable. Scrolling through screen after screen of items on your phone denies you the ability to flip a page back and forth between dishes you're considering; instead, you're expected to memorize items of interest as they scroll past. That's a janky experience at best, but here it's not even "at best." Aside from the inherent shíttiness of scrolling through a dinky menu on your phone while you're at the restaurant, the implementation here is defective. The names of dishes are cut off (see screen shots), and section headings for appetizers, entrees, and so forth are SMALLER than the text of items within the sections. So you're scrolling through drinks, and suddenly there are... meatballs. Compounding the tediousness of the menu is the fact that the restaurant offers separate Italian and Mexican sections... so scrolling is just the beginning. When you've reached the bottom of 10 screens of Italian, go back up to the top and flip a toggle so you can do the same thing through screens of Mexican. Do yourself a favor and bring a notebook and pen, so you can write down interesting things you see as you descend to the bottom of each menu. To top the already-poor presentation off, the footer of the online menu is a button that says "Pay check here after you order." Good job, Duplex: Now we're SURE that we're enjoying the same level of class we could find at Chipotle. The single piece of slack I'll give them on the use of an online menu is that they, unlike some other similarly degraded dining experiences, actually flagged some menu items as "out of stock" instead of waiting for us to order them and then telling us they're not available. The service is friendly and attentive. No problem there. But an odd aspect to it is the restaurant's forceful insistence that you order everything at the same time. They will not take appetizer orders and then come back with drinks and take your main-course order. This is part of the opening speech, and repeated if the idea ever comes up again. Not a huge deal, but curious. The food: Mediocre at best, with much falling short of that. The goat empanadas lacked any discernible seasoning, being essentially flavorless wads. The "Mushroom..." (that's how it appeared on the menu) turned out to be Mushroom Fontina Crostini. The generous portion of mushroom had the consistency of an olive tapenade and was also mostly unseasoned, but this was fine as it allowed the mushroom flavor to rule... on a few gnarled scraps of crostini. Even with generous heaping, there's no way the paltry supply of toast was going to transport the serving of mushroom. I mean... it's toasted bread strips. Why be stingy on that? It's fortunate that the QR-code menu item for the ragu bolognese lacked the fraudulent picture that appears on The Duplex's full Web site, or I would have sent it back. It showed up without the fresh basil it was supposed to have, or much in the way of meat in the "meat" sauce. Nor were there notable carrots or the parmesan shown in the picture. Interesting note: The menu simply says "meat sauce" without specifying what kind of meat. I submit that it's mystery meat, the mystery being... where is it? The carbonara was pretty good and had more meat than the bolognese. The mole negro's sauce was a bit sweet for a couple of us, but flavorsome and the best thing anyone ordered. The only specialty drink we ordered was the Tread Lightly, a spicy margarita. Now... a spicy margarita is a bit of a cocktail cliché at this point, but at least these showed up without sour mix, soda, or orange juice polluting them. So... not terrible. Oddly bitter finish, however. The bill brought two final insults. Not only was a 20% "gratuity" included for a party of four, but also another 2% "employee benefit fee." We tip at that level anyway. But the Duplex is still trying to jack customers with this tired and widely-scorned rip-off, instead of simply RAISING PRICES as necessary to pay their employees fairly. This amounts to calling customers stupid, and should eliminate The Duplex from your consideration. read more

Went on a Friday morning right before noon. They weren't busy at all so we got seated promptly and our server was friendly. They run a bottomless mimosas and brunch special that ends at 12 but we asked if we could still do it and although our server said they're usually pretty strict about the cutoff, he talked to the manager and came back to let us know we could do it. Enjoyed the mimosas and specialty cocktails. Food was great as well. I was there for a Yelp Event tonight, but since it was basically like a normal meal, I thought I would review here too. You might also notice that it's one less star. Let's start with the good stuff. The drinks were excellent and on special tonight. It was a real steal and the highlight of the meal. I also enjoyed my Korean Fried Chicken. Very good taste and a bit spicy. My brother also loved his food! As for the "not so good", the prices (outside of drinks) were ridiculously high. My chicken was so small for the $14 it typically is. You also do not order with a server, but rather off your phone. For a place this upscale, that was really weird. What was worse is that they have the audacity to charge an automatic 20% service fee AND ask for a tip. I know being a server is a thankless job and a rough profession, but we ended up doing a huge chunk of their job. I feel bad for even writing this, but o am still in shock that they did that. The main attractions here are the people, the dj and that it is black-owned. The food could be better. My meal was the White Lotus. It was tasty, though I'm a slow eater Andy eggs were over cooked by the time I finished it because it is served in a piping-hot cast iron skillet. So, it continues to cook at the table. My friends had the Chicken n Waffles. Their waffles were delicious, they said, but the chicken was dry. They probably need to try chicken thighs instead. The manager graciously comped all three of their entrees, which showed excellent service! Our server was also amazing. I wish I remembered her name, darn. All in all a great place for a party brunch. My wife and I came on a Thursday night and we're greeted by a warm and welcoming hostess who gave us the option to choose where we wanted to sit because the place wasn't busy. We took a booth and were able to take in atmosphere. My wife described as modern contemporary. The wall besides us was lined with wallpaper filled with beautiful plants. I also noticed that each booth had an outlet on the wall just above the tables as well. It seemed like a place perfect for locals to get a cocktail and the daily specials could possibly have you becoming a regular (I believe it was 5 dollar old fashions the day we went). There is also a 20% gratuity fee so you don't have to worry about including a tip. We came for the 2 Korean girls kitchen and we're not disappointed with what we got. The bibimbap hit all the right spots, acidic from the pickled vegetables, savory from the meat, umami from the runny yolk (adorable heart shaped egg) and sesame seeds, all resting on top of a bed of rice. Agreeable for the price and portion. We also got the Korean fried chicken. One of the most memorable sweet, savory, with a little spice chicken drumsticks I've had. They even were decorated with little edible star sprinkles. My wife ate it pretty much as soon as it came to the table and loved the crunchy shell and tender meat, and drumsticks are her least favorite. I ate half my bowl before moving to the chicken and was surprised to see them still so crispy after the wait. Next time we're going to have to gets full order. The cocktails were exceptional. Presentation just drew us in. The garnish, the colors, the fruity/tropical but not overpowering flavors took us away. I believe they were 14 and less each. I'm not a fan of gin and I was surprised by the Sands Island because I didn't taste it until I made my way near the end. Dined here on a Friday night and glad we made reservations because the place was packed. They had dim lighting, nice ambiance, a young crowd, and a DJ. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of restaurants that do all of their ordering and closing of the check online. I know that we need to embrace change and with COVID, I understand the reasoning, but it takes away from the dining experience. While our servers brought us food and drinks, it felt very robotic and quite honestly, to charge a 20% automatically added service charge to your bill, it makes me feel uneasy. The drinks were excellent, and we both enjoyed our food. I just don't think I'd want to tip in addition to the service charge if I ever come back because if you're bill is already $60, you're looking at well over $20-25+ added on if you include a service charge plus a tip of your own. Not a fan of that system, but I'm not gonna rag on them too much given the circumstances of small businesses struggling during pandemic, regulations, etc. We really liked the friend kimchi rice and I'd go back just for that honestly. I was really looking forward to having a good brunch experience here but unfortunately that didn't happen. Bright spot: the complimentary shot and the drinks I had, the mimosa & the mojito, were the only things I truly enjoyed. I had the Lobster Benedict that is served with potatoes. The dish didn't come out cold but it was barely even lukewarm. The potatoes were not seasoned and there was no salt/pepper in sight on the table. While my eggs were cooked perfectly, my friend who ordered the same dish had eggs that were overcooked. I was unsure whether or not an English muffin was a part of the dish but regardless the bread used was EXTREMELY hard to cut through with the butter knife and had me questioning my strength. Aside from these things, the taste was pretty good. Lastly, did not love the lack of attention from the server or lack of explanation as to how the ordering system worked. Service good. Food mediocre at best. They have drink specialties on their menu, which sounded interesting, but when I ordered one of the listed drinks, they were out of the ingredients. At the end of the dinner when I wanted a cup of decaf coffee, I was told they don't have it , so I asked for tea instead, which I discovered that they don't serve either! . Service was terrible. We waited 40+ minutes for our food to come out. You have to order from your phone after you scan the QR code so you have almost 0 face to face time with the servers (remind me again what the auto gratuity and surcharge is for?). Asked the server why our food isn't out yet and he said we placed just placed it a few min ago... (even tho I showed him the receipt). Took forever for a waiter to even come and bring out silverware and glasses for water. The drunken noodles were good but the quantity was very small. The chicken with the waffle was very hard and dry and basically just the crust with no meat. The DJ was good. Overall experience was alright and nothing too exciting. If you are looking for a place to have fun & a nice brunch, come check this place out. They have DJs on the weekend...music can be a little loud, but it didn't bother us that much. This place has a different concept to order. You scan the QR code and you can order and pay for your tab which is convenient. A 20% gratuity is added automatically to the bill, but staff always stopped by to check to see if we needed something and if everything was good. Bloody Mary - I like a god Bloody Mary from time to time. This one definitely hit the spot. Lobster Omelette - This was so good. I had lobster and bacon in every bite which was great!! It is one of my favorite brunch dishes now. The champagne béchamel sauce was good and a nice touch. read more

Lit brunch alert!!!! My homie told me this was a new, happening brunch joint so I had to check it out with another one of my close friends this past Saturday! As soon as you walk in during brunch hours you can see and hear the DJ rocking some dope joints, past and present. We took a look at all of the tables and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and their food. We got a booth and checked out the menu via QR code which looked very good with delicious options. We both struggled with a decision as everything looked fantastic. Ultimately I decided on the Lobster omelet which proved to be a great choice. Its topped with a very nice champagne bechamel sauce and white cheddar cheese and is accompanied by savory potatoes and toast of your choice. Of course we got the mimosa kit to wash down all the deliciousness...cranberry, orange and pineapple juice to mix. Our girl Michelle took care of us even though all ordering is contactless and through the QR code on the table. Hand sanitizer on the table is always a nice touch...thanks for providing! Michelle told us they have specials on most nights as they dont just do brunch FYI. They have indoor and outside seating and all reservations can be made on the Tock app or by just calling the restaurant. I will definitely return! read more

We were looking for a nice place to get dinner with our friends for their first night out after having a baby and landed on this restaurant. Server was very good and food was excellent. However, we were not aware of the fees until our bill came. Charged for tortillas without warning when minimal were provided to begin with. We were also handed a 20% gratuity and 2% employee benefit fee. This is unacceptable and we will not be back because of these reasons. read more

The key here is good weather when you can sit outside. The music is too loud inside to have a conversation with your drinks and meal. Outside is beautiful sitting across from a green space and the hipsters walking by just add to the ambience. Things tend to the sweet side even the savory drinks and dishes. Except the Golden Nuggets which have so much salt you can't actually taste the pretzel dough flavor without scraping most of it off. Great service staff. Very helpful welcoming and pleasant. It was a brutally hot today the air conditioning was working in the restaurant. The bathroom was nice and cool but not the dining area. The service was incredibly slow. We waited 20 minutes before we got our first cocktail and they weren't busy. it cost $10 per person to make a reservation so by the time we showed up, realized how hot it was, we couldn't leave because of the deposit.
