After seeing countless videos of Aberdeen Tap, I figured it was finally time to see what all the hype was about. I happened to be in the city, and the opportunity was too good to pass up. They open at 4 PM, and I walked in around 4:05. To my surprise, I wasn't even the first one there! People were just starting to arrive, and while it wasn't packed, I could already see the potential for this place.
I ordered eight wings, and luckily, they let me split the order between two sauces: Hot Buffalo and Spicy Tamarind BBQ. After about 15-20 minutes, the wings arrived, and I was immediately impressed. Big, meaty wings absolutely covered in sauce. And when I say covered, I mean these things were SAUCED UP!
In typical fashion, I started with the Spicy Tamarind BBQ. I love a good spicy BBQ sauce, but this one brought something different to the table. You get that familiar BBQ flavor, followed by a combination of tanginess and subtle sour notes that I wasn't expecting. All those flavors work incredibly well together without losing the spiciness. There's a lot going on with this sauce, but somehow everything complements each other.
Now, the Hot Buffalo is where things got interesting. First of all, this sauce is THICK! It's not your typical Buffalo sauce, and after just two wings, the heat was already catching up to me. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but I wasn't prepared for that level of heat. I ended up asking for a side of their regular Buffalo sauce, and that completely changed the experience.
Mixing the two created what I thought was the perfect bite. The regular Buffalo brought a more savory flavor that balanced out the intensity of the Hot Buffalo without taking away its spicy kick. Of everything I tried, this combination was easily my favorite. I couldn't stop going back for another bite.
But the sauces weren't the only thing that impressed me. These wings themselves were something special. They're on the larger side, incredibly meaty, and somehow manage to have a crispy exterior while remaining ridiculously juicy and tender inside. Whether I was eating a flat or a drum, every bite was packed with flavor. What really caught my attention was the smokiness. There's a pronounced, almost grilled flavor that makes these wings stand out. I'm not exactly sure how they're preparing them, but whatever they're doing, they're doing it right.
Between the crispy exterior, juicy meat, smoky flavor and sauces, everything came together beautifully. I genuinely remember not wanting the wings to end. Unfortunately, I only had about an hour to spend here, and my time was quickly running out. Had I not been on a schedule, there's absolutely no question I would've ordered another eight.
The more wing spots I visit, the harder it becomes to name an outright favorite. I've tried wings all over Chicago and across several states, including a few recent stops outside Illinois. At this point, the competition at the top is getting ridiculous, but Aberdeen Tap has absolutely earned its place in that conversation. The smokiness, texture and sauces make these wings different from so many others I've tried.
Chicago has no shortage of incredible wing spots, and I already have several favorites. Am I ready to call Aberdeen Tap my new number one? Not quite. When you've had wings this good at several different places, picking an outright winner becomes almost impossible. But this place genuinely has me reconsidering my rankings.
I came in wanting to see whether Aberdeen Tap lived up to all those videos, and I left wishing I had time for another order. I'll absolutely be back, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. I don't need to oversell it. The food speaks for itself.
