We took a chance on the Duck after finding it on Yelp! despite the very negative first review. We're out-of-towners who visit once a year for Brimfield and don't really know the area, and we were zonked and starved after 6 hours of the Mart, not expecting to discover our new favorite spot!
Everything from the food to the service to the ambiance was superb. Here in CT it seems we're constantly hearing how the labor shortage is forcing the already struggling hospitality industry to cut services- the Duck and Avellino are basically 2 restaurants (3 counting the patio, which, if you've ever worked in the industry you know you must.) It threw us off when we pulled in the lot haha - they share the same Host, but this woman was a wizard or something, we marveled at how she managed to be in 2 places at once (my Mr convinced himself she had an identical twin working there, wearing the same clothes apparently-- and he IS one, himself :-D) She was doing it all and it was really impressive.
For a late afternoon lunch service it was packed but they managed with only 2 servers for the whole dining room, but they were both completely on top of it and smiling the whole time. We were so lucky to have been helped by Ethan - superb! I asked a lot of him too... "What's the soup of the day, on this hot summer day when no one eats soup?" "You have a drink menu and I don't see Truly on it, so obviously you don't have it but I'm going to ask anyway! And can I get this, with the that, etc?" Ethan was attentive, friendly, helpful, and an overall extremely cool human. Parched from the Market- hubby inhaled 3-4 cokes and Ethan was there instantly with the re-fills.
Drinks- got the White Sangria, loved it but it's grapefruity and not your choice if you favor sweeter swills.
Apps- salad junkie so I got the House one, very generous portion -and I got the smalller one, w/o bleu cheese! Kept me busy until entrees. Comes dressed though - lightly, in a house balsamic, also not sweet, very tasty, but still if you want it on the side make sure you ask.
He got the pretzels - one of his faves and he said these were among the best ever. Homemade too- know how you go somewhere and they were clearly frozen and nuked? Not so! Very good sized portion too for $8!
Entrees- the Garlic Salmon= SO GOOD. Huge, tender filet, the garlic crust is subtle, delicate, and absolutely spot on. Served on a very generous bed of arugula, fresh greens and cherry tomato, with nice chunks of Feta, basically another large house salad, lightly drizzled with honey balsamic. I always tend toward ordering healthy, just my preference, but it's nice when you don't feel like you're eating diet food.
Husband opted for the steak tips, came with fries and THEN a side salad - he was very impressed with those portions. Really liked the tips and wanted to drink the sauce.
Also want to point out this: Our last meal "out," we picked up from our local Greek pizza joint. We were almost $80 out the door with tip. Our tab at what felt like a fancy, upscale place came to $67, and that's with alcohol, apps for each of us, and full entrees. I don't think we've ever done that! We spend more if we go to a Chillis. Such great value for money.
Overall, just a great experience, we cannot wait to return. Highly recommended for either a casual bite or a great special occasion. THANK YOU! read more
