The Dow is a great place for an afternoon beverage with friends. We stopped in on a windy Sunday come out to sure a few beers and play cribbage. Perfect spot. I really appreciate it because a variety in seasonality of their tap list. We didn't eat this time, but have multiple times in the past. The Dow is a good option for group events. The catering included flatbread, chicken wings, and sliders. Everything tasted fine for finger food. It is a popular place to watch sports games so the back area can get loud. Despite it being busy the service was friendly. There is a fancier dining and bar at the front of the restaurant. Came to the Dow for a work happy hour and it just met all the bar standards. Nothing too elevated, service was a bit slow and only a small portion of tables were available even though the restaurant was empty. i got the hot chicken sandwich and it was drenched in sauce (which i appreciate) but it did loose some crisp and it was not at juicy as i like. Located in the middle of a busy Birmingham street. Parking is important, the city loves to enforce street pay parking to the minute and garages can be pricey. Visually, the bar and pub looks great. Dark wood Irish and semi modern furniture. Great covered patio fronting the sidewalk with heaters. Good beer and liquor selection, rear bar for events to be leaving the front bar for normal customers. The bar stools look great, but have odd side ridges that mean they are only good for skinny people. The menu does not have prices, a real concern for some of the more traditionally expensive liquors available. I also got left at the bar after the initial service and it was hard to flag down another server-- they seem good at not meeting your eye. read more

The Dow is not what you would think for a "pub". It is way nicer/ they recently redid the back area and it's perfect for a Sunday game day. There are lots of TVs and beer options. The back area has high top tables as well as a couch area to lounge and enjoy bar food. The pretzel and dip were very yummy! The truffle fries were VERY fried but decent. I was under the impression that the beer prices changed based on how often they ordered, nope. They have a beer list and no prices on the list. Never have I been treated so poorly. The owner and the manager do not belong in the hospitality industry. We were snapped at as we walked in, ignored when we sat down and then ordered our drink and paid for only to be told we have to leave. We were almost done eating our snacks at 9:30 when we were told by the owner, who I thought at the time was a manger, that it was getting late and we needed to leave with your kids. First time visiting The Dow. Locals in Birmingham and many southern lower Michiganders referred to the restaurant and pub as Dick O'Dows. It's common. They've invested a lot of bucks in a new presentation (I didn't know the old). Front of house is a Scottish Pub atmosphere that suits folks coming in from Maple Street. The dark wood and pub-style bar are great. The connector to the back room, a far more spacious place had indoor/outdoor seating that works well. Food (lunch) was delicious and ordered/eaten on a Wednesday so clientele was smallish - really fine service. The outdoor seating is back-alley so that's a bit of an oddity. Regardless of price (and in an inflationary period - they're pricey), The Dow has good presentation and makes anyone feel as if they've discovered the hidden gem of Birmingham City in Michigan. I was somewhat disappointed after my visit here. The Dow Stock Exchange concept does not jive with the ambiance. Dick O' Dows has an upscale feel with a variety of seating options. I was anticipating a high energy establishment but it's very mellow and there are TVs placed around the establishment that reflect the price change in beers which change every 5 minutes. There is a huge selection of beer which ranges from $5-$9. Service was good. The bartender was present and appeared to be social with customers throughout our visit. Our waitress and a waiter were engaged on their cell phones throughout the duration of our visit. They made sure their customers had drinks and were taken care of, but I felt their service station should be away from customers. read more

The bartender Marissa was very rude. I've never been the type to not tip someone especially in the service industry but from the moment I sat down to the moment I left I felt like she didn't want me there. She never greeted me. Didn't bring me silverware for my food until I almost had to scream excuse me when the people next to me knew for sure she heard me. She is not a pleasant person and should not be in the service industry especially because she doesn't seem to want to be in the service industry. And with this being a place where people come hungry she really should not wear clothing that shows her stomach sticking out further than her breast. My glass has been empty for 12 minutes now and she hasn't asked me if I would like a refil. read more

The beer exchange concept means prices of the 40 craft beers it will have on tap will fluctuate every 15 minutes based on demand - the more customers drink of a certain beer, the more prices increase, as that's how the law of supply and demand works. Very fun ambiance to be in.. tons of people just talking and catching up with old friends/family. The alley leading to the Dow beer exchanges reminds me of being on set of Harry Potter. I would say the rating depends on what you are looking to get out of the place. 5 stars for an event space, as everyone is easy to work with, huge bar with a wait staff as well and a variety of seating from high tops, bar stools and couches. 3.5 stars if your looking for a dinner spot. Just no oooos and ahhhs for me. Friday and Saturday nights the bar can get pretty busy which is a good time to go if you like to play the beer stock exchange game. The more popular a beer is the higher the price goes and other beers prices will drop. They have a full menu from the Dick O Dow side and I was surprised to learn after being here multiple times, a full bar! Great name play for this beautiful space behind Dick O'Dows. A huge improvement on the dark, tired, Irish bar in the front. It's like you're in another world when you walk through from front to back. Looking forward to enjoying the patio in the summer months. The space is very industrious and a bit cold thanks to Michigan winters. The beer selection is okay, but a little small for my liking. One page of draft beers for Birmingham prices. The changing beer prices are only advertised on a small flat screen tv above the bar, so likely you're not coming here for a "deal" on beer. They change by pennies, so don't get too excited. We ordered some apps which were good. Service was very good the evening we were there-attentive waitress who was willing to let us try before we buy. The stock exchange gimmick is not as interesting as it sounds, but still a cool place to grab a drink and a snack. I was expecting to maybe get a great deal on less popular beers, but the system is obviously rigged. The cheapest beers were $5-$6 and went all the way up to about $11-$12. The chicken wings were great and above all, our server was fantastic. I wish I got her name so I could commend her! She was a blonde woman probably in her twenties and did a great job of recommending drinks and making us feel welcome without being obnoxious. In the mood to pay inflated prices for craft beer? You'll love this place. They are taking a stab at the "stock market" theme. Get this, if a beer is popular, you pay more. This is cool in the real stock market, because you make money playing it right. At The Dow, you just get to lose money, unless, of course , you choose an unpopular beer. Maybe I'm crazy, but I like to drink things that I enjoy, and other people probably enjoy. The game sound like too much work or expense to me. Although the place is visually appealing with its high industrial ceiling and roomy space with a variety of seating choices, paying $17.50 for two pedestrian beers is robbery. I drank an All Day IPA for $7.25. My husband had a Frankenmuth Christmas beer. We almost choked when we saw that we were charged $9.75. We ate at Dick O'Dows in the front of the property, so we didn't try the food, which is mostly appetizer-like choices. I can't imagine returning. There are more reasonable places nearby. Try Griffin Claw, HopCat or go to Michigan Growler in Beverly Hills if you want craft beer in a place that's not looking to drain YOUR portfolio. read more

I had high expectations as I've been to beer exchange venues before. However, I don't feel this venue fits the "exchange" or "Wall Street" vibe. * I visited here during a UM football game, so it was definitely loud... but I didn't have any warning or indication of when the "stock market" crashed or prices changed. Perhaps it was when I was in the bathroom or something. Other venues it's been a whirlwind of sounds, lights, etc. that you'd have to leave not to acknowledge! * The screen for the prices is super small, and therefore can't fit all the beers on the screen at once. It'd be fine if there were 2 screens that flipped back in forth, but I felt like it was more. * They have a good selection of beers, but some of their stats were wrong (ABV is the only one posted) - one was double what it really is. Maybe just a typo, but makes you think you're getting a great deal on a boozy drink when it's just an average drink. read more
