Phoebe at graduation demonstrating "place"
Bruce K.

We were at the end with our puppy. The morning we went to The Dog Knowledge for evaluation, we caught her hanging from the drapes by her teeth and trying to pull them down. Phoebe is a loving dog but she is a tornado. Full of energy and ready to destroy the house. Long story short, she's still full of energy and she is still trying to chew on anything that she can reach, BUT... we now have the tools to work with her. Four weeks at their place and Phoebe now understands several commands and as her humans, we do too. "No" and "Place" and "No" and "Heel" and "No" and especially, "Yes." If we use the right words we learned at graduation - Phoebe is under control. And thank goodness for the post-graduation on-site visit a few days later because we weren't using the commands right. We're learning. It's on us to "No" immediately and "Yes" when she does something right and provide a treat. We decided to join the membership and that provides unlimited retraining on Sundays. And we have a new boarding kennel. Five stars. They "saved" our dog. [Review 18756 overall - 3343 in North Carolina - 2279 of 2022.]

I've really enjoyed using The Dog Knowledge as a training resource! The guidance is clear, practical, and easy to follow, which has made a big difference in how I approach training sessions. One of the biggest wins has been with Olive--her leash walking has improved so much! She's walking calmly by my side now, with way less pulling and distractions. I can really see the progress, and it's made our walks way more enjoyable. Highly recommend this for anyone wanting to build better habits with their pup.

Annie had a great experience! We're very happy! We would recommend this training to anyone with a puppy they love.

Ghillie on Place

We enrolled our 4 year old black lab Ghillie in The Dog Knowledge Obedience training course and are very pleased with both the results as well as our experience with the staff and "parent training!" We sent Ghillie away to a trainer when she was 8 months old and while the trainer was good, we figured out later about 75% of the trainer's focus was field trial training and 25% obedience. Ghillie is not even close to a field trial lab and over time we realized we would all benefit from a different "positive" approach. The Dog Knowledge has proved to be exactly what she, and I imagine what all dogs destined to be loving family dogs, needed for training. She no longer pulls on a leash, walks at our heel when told and is getting better and better at "place"- a relief for our sofa's and a welcome change from being underfoot while preparing meals. We learned a great deal at "Graduation" where Dennis and company work with parents on all the commands and we left feeling very comfortable with our role in Ghillie's continued reinforcement of her new behavior knowledge. In addition, there is a great talk at graduation on how dogs think and learn, and while we have had labs for many years, we still learned a great deal. Finally, after graduation we had our two week "home visit" where one of the trainers comes to your home to simply review everything with you and answer any and all questions you have over the past two weeks. Dennis came out and was very patient as we asked questions and practiced again in front of him while he gave us many insightful pointers. It was a great reinforcement for us and the fun part was how excited Ghillie was to see Dennis! We would recommend The Dog Knowledge to anyone with a dog- young or older- who wants to have a well behaved companion -without having fear based training take away their spirit check out The Dog Knowledge for themselves. I guarantee you will be impressed to see the calm dogs of all breeds chilling on their beds all in the open training area! It was a great experience for Ghillie and her parents!

Stop here. You don't need to read any other reviews. This is the only place you want to train your dog ( and you ). Debbie and her team are well versed in dog speak and how dogs think. They believe dogs should be allowed to be dogs but be taught commands that keep them and let them feel safe. Add in that we (the dog parents) get training too and can come back for refresher training anytime we need it and you have the best dog training team in Charlotte!

Took our golden mix, Bogey, in for the month long training camp. My 45 Lb 5 month old puppy was great a lot of the time, but other times would jump and nip and was just becoming unmanageable for me. Their system of training really seems to work and my now 57 Lb puppy seems to have matured. He used to get the zoomies every night at 7 pm. Now we can hang out together and watch TV at night with a down command and rewards for good behavior. He's been home now for four days and is still behaving nicely. My only regret is that I didn't know about The Dog Knowledge with my last golden - not only for my benefit but for his as well.

Oliver out on a walk with his trainer!

Debbie and her team are amazing! Not only do they take time out of their day even before a consult to answer any concerns or questions, but they give their truly honest opinion and feedback on next steps and what they can or cannot fix. Daniel Basile and I signed up Oliver for the 4 week training program and it was one of the best decisions we've made. Not only was Oliver's behavior drastically improved, but TDK provided so many resources and help to use afterwards, for life. I highly highly recommend enrolling your fur baby here; truly a bunch of great people who really care about the dogs and the people. Even after the 4 week program, they have one of the trainers make an in home visit to evaluate your dogs behavior in real, real life. It was a great surprise bonus to the program. 10/10.

We took our 65-pound, 7-month-old black lab Piper in for training and The Dog Knowledge did an excellent job. Prior to bringing her in, she would pull and jump on walks, and now she has a perfect heel. Piper is very energetic, and before taking her to The Dog Knowledge, sometimes she had trouble calming down, now she is able to control her energy so much better. We are so happy with our decision to take her to The Dog Knowledge!!

My experience has always been great here. The front desk staff are all friendly and easy to talk to. It's always been easy to schedule drop offs and pickups. There have never been any unexpected surprise charges or anything like that. I love that the staff here ask questions about how to care for Lou but are not overkill when asking about his needs. I've been other locations and they insisted on going through a long questionnaire with me every visit on specifics about his care. And I'm the type of owner and Lou is the type of dog that it's like look - we're easy! Feed him, keep him safe and tell him he's a good boy. We'll both be happy! I do fully recommend this location for boarding or hair trimming. They have been great.

Absolute Failure of Care: Unauthorized Injury and Mismanaged Play…read moreI am writing this review as a serious warning to other dog owners. My experience with Camp Bow Wow Matthews was unacceptable, resulting in injury to my 10-month-old puppy and a complete failure of service on a follow-up visit. Incident 1: Unauthorized Procedure Resulting in Injury On his first visit, my 10-month-old puppy was subjected to an unauthorized nail trim that I did not request or approve. When I picked him up, his toenails had been cut down below the quick on multiple toes and were bleeding profusely. This indicates a severe lack of care and training, compounded by performing a painful procedure without owner consent. I complained to the staff immediately about the pain and distress this caused my puppy. Incident 2: Mismanagement of Play and Unapproved Confinement Despite the initial injury, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and brought him back. I picked him up to find he had been isolated and crated for the final three hours of the day. The staff claimed this was because he was "targeting a puppy." I reviewed the video footage they provided and confirmed that the behavior they labeled as "targeting" was clearly rough, energetic play--not aggression. For a professional daycare facility, misinterpreting normal puppy play and confining him for three hours instead of actively managing the group or separating him into a smaller, supervised area shows a complete lack of necessary skill and accountability. The combination of causing a preventable, unauthorized injury and then failing to provide the core service (socialization and supervised play) demonstrates a serious lack of professional care and judgment. I requested a full refund for both failed services. I strongly advise other pet owners to find a different facility that prioritizes the safety, accurate behavior assessment, and well-being of your dog.

For the first time, they need a 'meet and greet' this is a full day of daycare for free where they basically watch to see if your dog is an appropriate fit. It was hard to find a day that worked as they had specific times to drop off for the meet and greet. So that took a few weeks to get scheduled. When we finally got in there, they were very friendly and gave me a tour of the facility so I could see what it looked like. When I picked him up they told me how he did and that he 'passed'. Moving forward, you do have to book ahead of time to secure a spot for your dog. I have done it the day before and have not had a problem of them being full yet. They also post on their Instagram and on the door of the building if they have walk-in availability for the day without a reservation. You can book right on the website as well as purchase days of daycare online, and the more days you purchase, the more $$ you save. They do not have webcams and they don't do any sort of 'report card' at the end of the day, so we just assume that no news is good news with how he did, haha! They do have an Instagram and post many photos of dogs daily. Our dog has been featured about half the amount of days he's been there. When he comes home he is exhausted. Typically for that day and the day after! Last time we took him, he was so sleepy for almost 48 hours that we really debated if he was sick but then just realized he was exhausted from having a great day of daycare lol! They are open from 7-7 on the weekdays so convenient for work schedules. We will be back!
