The lamb chops were delicious, and as busy of a night as it was with the farmers market, the staff worked their tails off to give us a table within 10 minutes. We've always visited the Monrovia Diplomat in the past, and it was always good along with the service. Today we visited the Diplomat Jr. in Glendora and it was not the quite the "upscale" Mediterranean dining advertised, but quite the contrary this time. From the fruit flies & black fly constantly buzzing around our table and landing in our food, to the lack of standard Mediterranean type accoutrements omitted from our meal. The chicken was seasoned and flavorful, but somewhat undercooked. The typical Mediterranean saffron rice was now replaced with plain [bland] rice pilaf, and no hummus or garlic is included with your "Mediterranean" meal. You must pay $10 extra for hummus, and $4 extra for a 2oz disposable container of garlic; a total $14.00 extra for condiments. But you do receive a large Mexican chile and cooked tomato, (to which i personally did not eat because i avoid highly acidic foods.) I would recommend to the Restaurant owners to keep the front door shut (especially when it's 92° out), or install a fan over the front door so that flying insects can't get in, annoy customers & contaminate the food. I would also recommend serving a traditional saffron rice since it is a "Mediterranean" restaurant. Additionally, the hummus was horribly boring and could've used a little garlic added for a little flavor, or garlic, infused olive oil blended it when making it. Garbanzo beans by themselves are boring and flat in flavor. The service was lacking, as our waitress slow or MIA most of the time & in fact at one point we had to leave our table & go find her in the bar as she was helping the bartender with no customers present. We've been to the Monrovia Diplomat several times and love the food and service. I assumed the Glendora location would be likewise. Nope. The food is equal but definitely not the service. We had to ask the waiter multiple times for water. For refills (it was 100 degrees and we were thirsty), we had to ask other servers because ours was nowhere to be found. Then we had to remind the other servers because they were just as slow and/or forgetful as our waiter. Ditto for dessert. Ditto for to-go boxes. We had to chase down the waiter to get the bill, then chase him down again to pay the bill. We could've walked out and no one would've noticed. If the restaurant was super busy, I would've been half annoyed and half understanding. The restaurant was half empty, so I was fully annoyed. And then came the slap across the face. Because we were a party of 8, the bill included the tip, which is normal. What's not normal was the tip amount -- 20%! That's typically how much I tip, but no way did any of the Diplomat Jr wait staff deserve that much, especially our waiter. Skip this location and head straight to the Monrovia one. We visited The Diplomat in Glendora by the Village. The food was delicious, and this is a restaurant my family has been to before. Unfortunately, this visit was not the best overall experience. They had a band playing, which could have been fun, but it was way too loud. It was difficult to have a conversation, so we asked to sit farther in the back. That helped a little, but the noise level still made it hard to enjoy dinner comfortably. Our server was also not good during this visit, which made the experience more frustrating. That has not always been our experience here, so I do not want to say this is the norm, but this visit definitely fell short. My gf heard about The Diplomat Junior from her coworker and she was raving about this place so we decided to check them out ASAP. We stopped by this past Sunday a little after 3 PM and were invited to sit anywhere inside. It took a little bit of time to get our menus but that was no problem for us. Here's what we ordered: **Spicy Lebni Plate: We were between this and the tzatziki but ultimately went with the spicy lebni plate because it's something we haven't seen before. We ended up dipping every single thing we had on our table in this dip. With that being said, this was BOMBDOTCOM. (5/5) **Soujouk Boreg: I've had a take on soujouk boreg once so I don't know what a good one is supposed to be like but I'm guessing this is it. This was one of the most delicious savory pastries I've ever had in my life. The meat was tender, juicy, and full of flavor! (5/5) **Fried Cauliflower: Extremely zesty although, I would've liked to see some lemon wedges on the side for those that want just a little bit more. The hummus dip they served with this was good but was amazing with the spicy lebni. One of the best cauliflower dishes I've had to date. (5/5) **Combo for Two: The chicken kebab was borderline juicy and dry but had very good flavor. The beef kebab cooked medium was amazing. The lule kebab was slightly gamey and very salty. The charred pepper was very delicious and I highly recommend you eat it with everything else on the platter. The rice was a little on the saltier side but once you eat everything with pita bread, it's more tolerable. Great dish overall but not spectacular like the others. (4/5) **Jallab: I love trying drinks from different cultures. I was told this was on the sweeter side but I ordered it anyways because it sounded very intriguing. I'm generally not a fan of floral flavors but the mix of rose water, grape molasses, and dates was very refreshing and delicious. Very refreshing and a perfect combo with our meal. (5/5) Overall, great flavor and affordable prices. Everything we had was so delicious but that spicy lebni plate was a massive gamechanger. Definitely ordered too much for two people but we ended up finishing everything besides some pita bread. All that food was just under $90 which was very surprising. If you want to save more, you can pay cash to pay a little over 3% less. The only downside was the slow service at times. It took significantly long to receive our menus and our check at the end. Mr gf was not offered any refills for her coke. We did however, receive one refill for our water during our meal. I usually dock a star for lack of service but honestly, the food was just so amazing that I couldn't do that. I hope management sees this review because this place would easily be my new favorite restaurant if the service was as good as the food quality. I met two fiends here for dinner. As a first-time visitor, I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by this place, which felt upscale yet casual. My group and I sat at the tables located outside. It was a nice, warm evening, so outdoor seating was perfect. We listened to very good, energetic jazz, chatted, and had dinner. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and polite. Thank you for the great service. I had a Greek salad minus olives because I HATE olives and pickles (yuck!!). The Diplomat Jr. is definitely on the more upscale side, with a classy interior, a refined atmosphere, and pricing that reflects the quality of the experience. While the portions are by no means small, they may not feel as generous relative to the price point--for example, the Lule Kebab comes with just one skewer. That said, the quality of the food truly shines through. The Hummus with Sautéed Filet Beef was rich, nutty, and packed with tender, flavorful beef. The pita served alongside it was fresh, fragrant, and still warm from the oven. The Spinach Borag was light, crispy, and filled with a delicious cheesy center, while the Falafel was perfectly crunchy on the outside with a flavorful blend of herbs throughout. The standout for me was the Lule Kebab. It was perfectly seasoned, moist, and tender, and even the rice was well-flavored rather than being treated as an afterthought. The good: We shared your Combo for Two (Chicken, Beef, and Lule Kebabs). Everything was tasty. So good. The surprise? Your rice. Amazing. The bad: We sat for 15-20 minutes before a server found us, without any idea we were there or had been waiting and waiting and waiting. We ordered an appetizer (cheese rolls...yum) and your combo. Delicious. Everything came out in a timely manner. Did anyone check on the food afterward. Nope. Anyone come to refill glasses? Nope. Anyone come for a box or check? Not once. I had to find someone each time, and that person never came back. At the end of the meal, I went to your bar to ask for a box and a check. The gentleman who completed our order offered nothing in response to the lack of service, nor did he adjust anything on our bill. An apology? Nope once again. We heard, "Thanks for your patience" at least twice, but no attempt to honor a lack of connection or customer contact. So Diplomat, we love your food. You have a killer kitchen and recipes to be proud of. But your service and ability to value new guests or recognize and correct a wrong? Completely absent. So we'll be absent too. Wow, what a terrific Mediterranean restaurant. We all had delicious bowls of lentil soup for our mains, and it wasn't too small because we had filled up on appetizers. The principal of these were hummus, well seasoned with olive oil and served with cucumber slices as well as pieces of pita bread; and cauliflower, delicious because it was thoroughly seasoned without being at all spicy. There's nothing Junior about The Diplomat Junior. With their recent expansion and outdoor seating, it's a full-fledged Mediterranean restaurant and it's a local fave of ours! Today, I stopped in for lunch with one of my daughter's in prep for taking her to college on Friday. It was closing in on 100 degrees outside as I walked in to what felt like the North Pole or Glendora. It was so cool and comfortable, we knew immediately we chose the right spot. We were greeted as we walked in and told we could choose anywhere we liked. So, we grabbed a table in the new expanded area. Which, to our surprise was now nicely decorated and sound-dampened. Upon a prior visit months back, when they initially opened the new area, it was basically a box - a very loud box. But, now, they've decorated it to the theme of the restaurant and added wall decor to reduce the sound and lighting that provides for a wonderful dining atmosphere. Our waitress was with us within a minute and was super attentive and friendly throughout our lunch. Hayley and I both ordered a Chicken Shawarma lunch plate and a side of fries with Spicy Lebne. The wrap was fantastic! The chicken was cooked to perfection! The spice was just right. The sauce and toppings were all apportioned appropriately. And, the side of hummus, pita, and red cabbage topped it all off! Prob didn't need the fries, but they came out super hot and crispy and were outstanding as a dipping tool for the lebne, no need for the extra pita so we packed that up for a snack at home to finish off the left over hummus. We've been coming to The Diplomat Jr. for years and it keeps getting better. That's refreshing, as many places tend to do the opposite over time - they lose the spark that once made them a local fave, but not here. We also love the dinner plates and often bring larger family parties too. Now, that our three are all off to college by Friday, the next time we all meet up for dinner will be an entirely different experience - and I'm thinking The Diplomat will be just the place. read more

We pass by this restaurant on a daily basis as we walk the downtown area. I recently stopped in and bought a quick side to go. Stuffed Grape leaves, the restaurant was empty as was the patio. Service was quick and after paying $15 we were on our way. The container had 4 small pieces with garnish and a lemon wedge. Nice restaurant space in a cute Main Street part of town. I loooove finding quaint little main streets and the local shops and restaurants. It is seat yourself, but many of the tables needed to be bussed (and we had to ask for ours to be bussed and cleaned). So not a great start. Came here for my mom's birthday with my brother and sister. They unfortunately got some of our orders wrong. For example my sister ordered the Greek salad (but it was missing the olives; which is a main ingredient in a Greek salad). Then my beef Shawarma plate had some issues: for one, the beef was overcooked, and for another the menu described slices of meet but rather they were chunks of meat. I was anticipating the types of meat slices that you would get from a rotisserie - thin and packed with flavor. These overcooked chunks had to be heavily coated with sauce for me to tolerate. Then they completely forgot to bring out my brother's sprite drink. And when we asked for extra sauces, napkins and water refills it took them longer than I'd deem acceptable. Lastly, there was a family there with 2 small children (one being a small toddler), and the toddler kept screaming and crying. It was hard to tell if the parents were trying to do anything to calm the child down, but after the second outburst I would have expected one of the staff members to politely approach the parents and ask them to take the child outside briefly to help calm down the situation. No effort of sorts was made and it was seriously disturbing other patrons including my family and I who was just trying to enjoy a birthday dinner. And my brother, who's on the spectrum, had to walk out (in the middle of his dinner) because of the overstimulation of the screaming child. I understand kids are going to have outbursts, and parents deserve to go out and enjoy a restaurant too, but at a certain point parents have to intervene. They aren't the only party in a restaurant, and other people want to enjoy themselves too, without having to plug their ears because parents AND restaurant staff won't intervene. Might sound harsh but that's simply incompetence on parents to emotionally address a child and restaurant staff in assuring other patrons are comfortable. This is a very charming restaurant tucked in the middle of an amazing downtown of Glendora. Today I had lunch here with a friend and the entire meal was flawless. Appetizer: Tabbouleh was really tasty. Get this, and thank me later. Main course was chicken kabob with rice. Chicken cooked perfect and great portion size for the price too. Bonus: a Lebanese Pilsner, Almaza, almost stole the show. Light, crisp...and perfect for the warm weather. The proprietor of this establishment was helping us today. Wow! I've never eaten here and don't know how many years this restaurant has been here, but I'm in love with the food. I had the lamb chops and they were cooked to perfection. The rice tasted so good. My cousin and her husband were with me and they had the filet mignon Shawarma and they couldn't stop talking enough about their meal. The service was great. We sat where we wanted got our drinks on time gave us time to peruse the menu and the food came out quickly. The ambience was very nice with relaxing music playing low in the background so as not to be disruptive to those talking and they also have patio seating. It really was grilled to perfection. We also ordered the hummus with the filet. I am ruined for life in a good way! This is honestly the best hummus I have ever had in my life. This is arguably one of the better restaurants in Downtown Glendora. It has all the makings of its predecessor The Diplomat in Monrovia. However the food is not quite as tight knit as the original it is still very clean and full of flavor. Staff is always friendly and relatively attentive. I've been a loyal patron of The Diplomat Junior in Glendora ever since it opened--and I've also enjoyed its sister locations (such as the original one in Monrovia and the La Verne spot, which remains my current favorite) Over the years, the food in Glendora has generally been good. But over the past two years, the service has steadily declined, and most recently, management made a baffling and abrupt decision: they began charging $6 for the famous Lebanese garlic sauce--something every Middle Eastern restaurant typically offers for free as a standard accompaniment to chicken dishes. This isn't a modest upcharge; it's a fee for something that should be complimentary. I was shocked--and frankly dismayed--when I was rudely informed of this change during a visit after dining at this location regularly for years. There was no warning or explanation--just a curt note that the sauce now comes with a price tag. If you still value hospitality, service, and being treated like a regular, I would wholeheartedly suggest you avoid the Glendora location--unless this charge suits you. Instead, head over to La Verne: they still offer the garlic sauce for free and continue to staff attentive, friendly people who genuinely care about their diners. read more

Popped in today after a grueling bike ride on GMR. 11:30 am and about 10 of us are at the door! My first time! We order just two things: Chicken Kebab Wrap which comes with hummus and pita bread but today we also got some complimentary rice. The sandwich was good but the real hit was my order: Filet Beef Fattoush Salad. OMG the beef was lean and tender. Cooked perfectly. The salad was so fresh and refreshing! We sat on the patio on a Friday night. I'd say they were medium-busy. It was difficult to get waters, to place a drink or food order, and it took a really long time to get our bill/change. We were a group of 4, which I don't consider "large" but when we tried to pay the waitress said "large parties can only use 1cqrd". It seemed made up in the moment. I think they seemed a little understaffed, but the waitress was less than warm, plus not very efficient. A few times I'd say she was rude. A little kindness would have made it less uncomfortable. A young waitress spilled a drink, never said sorry or brought napkins to clean it up. That was odd. The food was ok. Tonight we went to this restaurant for the second time and at 8:30 we were told the kitchen was closed. I looked at my watch and thought it was strange because the hours said closes at 9pm. Plenty of people eating outside still. The first time we went at 9 so we missed out and thought we would try again. Why would a nice place like this close at 8:30 on a Friday night?? Crazy!! The spices they used were so flavorful and the meat was so tender, and the rice pilaf it came with was full of savory goodness as well. I can't say I've tried a chili or pepper before, but this chili was so similar and shared the great flavor of the Pimiento del Padron I had in Spain, it's like shishito peppers without the over the top spicy hotness. I was seated outside, once again, and I literally heard people on the sidewalk walk by saying, "This place is so good!" I agree, it's not only good, it's fantastic! If you don't know what to get, try the combination platter for two; it has the right mix of "everything." If you're extra hungry, get the appetizer platter for two. To be honest, you could order this for four people and might need to take some leftovers back to devour later. I don't always eat rice, but when I do, it's from The Diplomat (did you like my dos equis impersonation?). This is by far the best tasting, fluffiest, moist, and damn-near perfect rice I've ever had. Not only do they soak it overnight, you can tell by the taste there is something different about it... it's made with love. Order a large Toum (garlic sauce). In typical Nike mantra, Just Do It. Not only will you fight off vampires, afrit, stryx, empousai, mormou, vyrkolakas, sarkamenos, stregoi and nosferatu, you'll enjoy the extra flavor and kick that compliments anything on The Diplomat's menu! If you take a date to The Diplomat, be sure you both eat some Toum or you're going to be very lonely the rest of the evening. If you like lamb, you'll love the lamb chops. That's all I'm going to say about that; you can thank me later. Parking can get tight since they share a close parking lot with other businesses, but it's not a bad thing to have to walk a bit and get your steps in.
