Our waitress who had roped cattle as a girl and whose family are 4th generation ranchers here recommended I order the bacon, eggs and hash browns, all great. I added a side of fresh sliced avocado and a biscuit. I poked into this diner on a Saturday morning before my jog around the hills and at that time the place was crowded with families in booths. It had a warm weekend feeling. When I came in with my son and a friend later that morning, the diner was quieter. The staff were fun to chat with and helpful. We felt welcome. It was regular local breakfast food. Maybe I'd recommend approaching the place with a generous perspective, then I don't think you'll go wrong with this Paonia diner experience. The food was good. The Hippie Melt and the Freshie Skillet are favorites, though we've had pancakes, French toast, burgers - tons of great food! I can't believe how bad the food was. My wife ordered Blueberry pancakes. She got 1/2 cooked pancakes. When she sent them back she we were told they were made with frozen berries. My wife changed her order to French toast. When they served them to her they also sent a small bowl of "fresh blueberries" They lied to us when they said the berries were frozen hence the undercooked pancakes. As far as my breakfast I had the two egg breakfast. Bacon, wheat toast and hashbrowns. hashbrowns were only cooked on one side not browned at all and were soaked in grease. My wife ate her meal while I waited for them to bring my hashbrowns. When I got them they were exactly the same way undercooked on one side only and again soaked in grease. At that point the nasty old lady with a bad temper that was serving us got mad at me and started yelling. When I told her I was a retired chef of over 30 years she yelled you can go talk to the cook then.. trying to make it my fault they served crap food. She also said she would give me a discount. She didn't and she also said... "Oh no tip that figures" I said when you try to make bad food the customers fault that what you get. This isn't the first time we have been served crap food at the Diner. I won't go into the rancid burgers we got for lunch the last time we. We will never go back and I'll tell everyone I know all about the bad tempered old bag of a server. How they lie and mostly THEY SERVE CRAP FOOD! We recently spent a weekend in Glenwood Springs and decided to go exploring in a corner of the state we had not been through before. We found ourselves in Paonia at lunch time and stopped to get gas and some advice on where to eat. Two different people recommended The Diner, so we headed downtown. The homemade fries were just the way I like them, and my mushroom swiss burger was delicious. My fiance got the jalapeno cream cheese burger and said it had a good clean flavor. We both liked that the food was honest and uncomplicated, which is so hard to find in the myriad of chain restaurants everywhere. While walking around town, we decided to jump into the diner for a late lunch. Turns out it was 30 minutes until closing. Despite that, our server eagerly encouraged us to stay, and even asked if we wanted dessert. Honest portions of good heathy food make this place a winner. The second worst dining experience of my life. The first being what I'm sure was a drug front that smelled like pee by some railroad tracks in Indio, California. Horrible low quality food that was cooked poorly, took over an hour and was served cold. Complained and got a mere 25% discount on our bill. Yum. read more

We went to The Diner on Sunday October 7, 2017 with 8 other people. We ordered and our orders came out one at a time that an hour and everyone of us had cold food. I ordered the Brisket and Pork Salad. On the menu it said on a bed of Rabbit food.(The waitress didn't even know what that meant). I choose the side as Fresh Potato Chips. First they should have said fresh grease chips. Dripping grease and cold. There was also something wrong with the pork. It smelt bad and tasted like heavy smoke.) The cucumbers on the plate were yellow and smelt like fish and tasted even worse. All of our food came one at a time. One of the other orders was a quesadilla with the pork.(It was bad too) When the waitress asked how our food was I told her about the pork, cucumbers and potato chips and she just said, "oh". No apology no adjustment in our bill. After reading other reviews that is what is in most of them how the food comes out one at a time and cold! My niece even talked to the waitress and she didn't even adjust our bill. My niece also noticed that the cooks were using their hands to turn the hamburgers on the grill????? Yuck!!!! Being right on Main Street, this place was a classic rural town gem. We enjoyed some down home french toast, hot coffee, and home made corned beef hash. We had heard good things about The Diner here in town from my family, so we went in to try it because who doesn't like a good burger at a local diner, right? So we went a little after noon for lunch and, well, we were certainly not impressed; we were not even satisfied nor were we pleased by any means. I ordered the cheeseburger with their house-made chips. I was kind of excited to try a restaurant's homemade chips, but the chips were somehow half wet and half burned. The cheese on the cheeseburger seemed like really cheap fake cheese and was not very pleasing. The bread on the burger was just extremely greasy toast, and was uncomfortable to have on my fingers. The beef itself just tasted like charcoal. My boyfriend ordered the chicken-fried steak with french fries and a side of carrots and a dinner roll. The steak was really soggy, and the breading was not crispy by any means. The gravy that came with the steak had a heavy chicken flavor. They forgot to put the roll on the plate, and when it came, it did not seem to be anything special or fresh. The carrots were just chopped, boiled and placed in a little dish, nothing extraordinary. The worst offender on that plate, however, were the french fries. We did not think it possible to cook french fries with that much oil, but they were just saturated in it. You could not have accomplished putting that much grease into a potato unless you injected it with a syringe full of cooking oil. The portions were decent, not to much and not too little, not that we really would have liked to have had more. The staff was courteous, but not especially enthusiastic. When my boyfriend inquired as to what Texas Toothpicks were, the server didn't especially try to sell it to us and seemed kind of "meh" about it. The cleanliness of the establishment was not bad though, the tables seemed to have been cleaned properly and the state of the place overall was acceptable. The food was just absolutely soaked in oil. I love how relaxed the atmosphere is, they are very child friendly which is hard to find these days with so many people being offended about anything anymore. The good review here are from the previous owners. This place has gone WAY downhill in the last few months with new ownership. Just frozen and greasy Dennys type of food now with horrible grouchy service. The place reeks of dirty fryer oil and the wait for a lousy breakfast wasn't worth it. Nice find in Paonia after driving over McClure pass from Redstone. Diner-style menu in small town. Food is good and prices are reasonable. Enjoyed my wrap sandwich and salad. Had to choose between milkshake calories or onion rings. The rings won and were tasty. But a real milkshake mixer on the premises.....so give that a try. I'd come again but it's a long trip from Denver. Recommended for breakfast or lunch. Closes mid-afternoon. read more

The atmosphere here is ok but was less than impressed with the food. Ok if you're just expecting a "greasy spoon" kind of place. My girlfriend and I ordered a Grilled Cheese, both had only one slice of gross processed cheese on not quality bread. I made better Grilled Cheese than this in college... I had potato salad as my side. It was ok but again, I've had way better. I think even the potato salad you get in the tubs at the grocery store was better. Not to mention the kitchen completely forgot my friend's husband's order. His wife and I got our food and were done eating before he got his meal. Yes, the waitress apologized for the wait but they should have either discounted his meal or taken it off of the bill completely. When you mess up that bad, you need to make it right. He had ordered a sandwich wrap, the meat was something you'd get out of a package in the lunch meat section at the grocery store (the cheap kind). Again, nothing special. French fries were way over cooked to the point of being almost burnt. The food isn't great but at least the prices aren't outrageous (I guess you get what you pay for). I don't know what was more disgusting the food or the owners attitude. My husband ordered a breakfast burrito with no meat or green peppers. Instead they gave me steamed vegetables wrapped up in a tortilla for nine bucks! When we called the owner about the mistake she was very rude and barely let us get a word in. She blamed us for not being "explicit" which is utterly ridiculous. How much can one say about a breakfast burrito. All of the food on the menu is overly priced and they don't even season anything and it tastes like hospital food. Do not waste you time or money there are better places to get a meal in Paonia. read more
