Terrible communication. When it comes to converting pictures, everyone has pretty much the same equipment and quality, unless you're looking for a higher quality digitization and more professional end result. We have had two separate jobs with them, each they never communicated back to us when the job was completed. On one, they promised to rush it, and never met the deadline they promised. And they not only missed it, but didn't take any action until I called them after the deadline had passed. The final straw is when I went to pick up the pictures and they couldn't even find them. After 10 to 15 minutes of searching, they found them. It's unfortunate that this is the level of service they offer. For our next job, I'll definitely look elsewhere. read more

The have converted my family audio tapes to digital wav files. My tapes were 1/4" reel-to-reel but I understand they do cassettes as well. The quality was much better than I was able to achieve using a borrowed reel-to-reel machine. They also converted some VHS tapes of my children growing up to digital files. They are throughtful, professional, and detailed. The person I talked to was the person who actually did the work. They were ready to return my materials and provide a flash drive at the time they promised. They may not be the cheapest. I tried some mail-order service but found I prefer to work with someone I can talk to and who can give professional advice. Its best to call ahead if you are dropping materials off at their shop. Their hours may vary and they appreciate appointments. I recommend this service. read more

I was procrastinating getting several VHS and Super 8 selections into digital format. These guys are in Rogers Park, so you can drop off and pick up your photos and videos. The quality largely depends on how good the original material is. My Super 8 film from the 80s was only so so, but the early 2000s video transferred well. If I find more treasures, I'll bring them to The Digital Convert. read more

My experience is that the Digital Convert relies on their clients' ignorance of the technology to excuse sloppy, sub-par, unprofessional work. I get that they are affordable compared to other vendors, but that doesn't excuse the kind treatment I got. I wouldn't trust these guys with something as precious as an old home movie again, and I don't suggest you do either. Think about it, there might be only one copy of your video in the world. Do you really want to give it to a bunch of hipster kids who blow deadlines and talk down to you? It's a bit long, but here was my experience with them: A few weeks ago, I dropped of some VHS taped to be transferred in a "rush" capacity. I needed to prepare a slideshow for my brothers wedding. I mentioned I didn't quite know the contents or the length of the tapes, (they belong to my brother's future in-laws). The lady I talked to acknowledged that, seemed amiable, and we agreed upon a time the transfer would be ready. She even mentioned that I could drop by before their official business hours since that would suit my schedule. The Digital Convert seemed promising. The following week, I came by a few hours after the time we had agreed upon. I mentioned my last name, and a male voice yelled at me brusquely from the back, "end of the day." The woman I spoke to mentioned that they had three other rush jobs they were working on. They said they would get in touch when it was ready for pick-up. About 30 minutes before they would close, they had still not gotten in touch with me as they promised. I called to check-in. After a back and forth, they called me about 15 minutes later. The man I spoke with said that he was copying files and that it would be ready in "16 minutes," but "he couldn't stay late today." We're talking about sticking around for maybe 5 minutes past closing to finish a job that was already late. Ridiculous. (Technical note, the video files were ultimately less than 6 GB. It took less than 5 minutes to copy to my Mac desktop via USB 2.0. So the guy was either using a really, really old machine or blowing smoke.) I came by the next morning, and some hipster kid tried to explain to me that the timebase was off or corrupted on one of the tapes and that's why they needed to recapture it. (Another technical note, if they were using professional equipment, or even "pro-sumer" grade equipment, there would have likely been a high quality timebase corrector built-in to the deck they were using.) He also mentioned that one tape was SLP instead of LP. Regardless, this was more excuse-making. I don't think it's unreasonable to account for these kind of things in giving a rush quote, especially if you have as much experience with legacy formats as this place claims. The most galling thing was that they still charged me for a "rush" job even though they were a day late. I pointed this out to the hipster kid and he mumbled something about the owner not being in. Already late, I left. The whole point of getting a "rush" job is that it is done at a specific, agreed upon time. If as a vendor, you can't make it at that agreed upon time, it's up to you as a vendor to communicate clearly and honestly with your client. I see a lot of 5 star reviews for this place and I wonder if they aren't the result of people just being pleased with finally having access to old videos, and less about the actual quality of the work these people perform. Or maybe they do better work when they aren't on a deadline. Maybe my experience was an outlier. Regardless, I recommend you take your tapes/film somewhere else, and maybe pay a premium for better work/customer service. As someone else said in an earlier review, Ezra has the patience of a saint!!! I needed to convert old photos (very old) into a digital montage for my brother's 60th birthday (how'd he get to be so old!!! LOL ;-) and found The Digital Convert in my google search. I had some 600 photos that I needed to cull down to 250, and Ezra patiently worked with me, guiding me along to make the process as easy as possible. Additionally, the montage came out perfect! I stand by my 2-star-rating of the Digital Convert. After posting it, I received an email from the owner partially apologizing and offering explanations and closing with "I think you should give a business the benefit of the doubt and not suggest that your particular situation was representative of a business culture that has served well over a thousand families over the last five years. The situation was fleeting. Your review is permanent. Please keep that in mind." I thought about what he said and whether my review was unfair. I had read other Yelp reviews before going to the Digital Convert and remembered that another reviewer said the owner had emailed him after a negative review. That got me wondering whether Ezra does this regularly - confronts anyone who ranks his business poorly. (I have no idea, of course.) Still, I decided that I needed to think about whether I had been off base for a bit -- and we were preparing for a several week trip abroad anyway, so I didn't really have time to deal with the issue at that moment. Fast forward a day or two, and Ezra blasts me with an owner comment publicly disclosing my real first name (which you'll notice I don't use on my Yelp profile) and labeling my review an "outlier." I understand his need to protect his business. But his response to me by email coupled with the public owner comment struck me as aggressive and vindictive. I gave an honest appraisal of my experience with his business. Ezra has every right to offer his perspective on our interactions, but I wish he would not have disclosed my real name. If he did not do it intentionally or to be vindictive, then perhaps he will edit his comment to remove my name now. Regardless, the only substantive update I will make to my original review is this: I never intended to claim that I know what his office looks like except on the two occasions I was there. I also never said that I know about the quality of work he has done for other people. All I know about is my experience with the place. A different response from him may have brought me back. The one I received confirms that I personally have no interest in doing future business with him. You, of course, can make your own decision. read more

My boss found the digital convert earlier this year for some film that we'd found cleaning out a closet. They were all medium format film of images so they weren't the normal 35 mm and Ezra did scanned them all for us at a great price and quick turn around. He scanned them to whatever DPI we requested and we packaged them nicely in a cd. I also appreciated that he is open past 5:30!! The office building is the weirdest part of the whole experience, it's an old building that seemed to be built in the early 60's and last updated in the early 80's in a 70's style. It's very Lynch and I could see this whole office building hosting strange businesses with weird characters. It office building feels like a cheesy set for a weird surreal office drama. read more

I cannot say enough great things about this business and it's wonderful people who really care about your memories. My husband converted old movies from the 1960s and had a seamless experience with his treasured old films. For my mother's 80th birthday he suggested I use The Digital Convert to convert my family slides from the 1970s to digital files. I only brought in about 30% of the slides in case they were lost or destroyed. From the time I dropped off the slides through getting my digital files, the company and its processes are so smart, organized and efficient. They have a process for everything, numbering, tracking, multiple backup plans to ensure your memories are safe. I just got off the phone with Ezra, the owner, because I was in a panic about accessing my files (it was my own mistake). I had sent him an email at 9pm at night and he called my mobile phone immediately upon receiving my email to help me and calm me down. I was able to access all of my precious photos! I had 200 photo prints of all different sizes and age that I needed scanned for a funeral out of state. I was hugely stressed on the time constraints and knew it would take me countless hours to scan at home. I dropped them off at Digital Convert in kind of a mess of multiple plastic bags. He scanned them for me and kept everything separate and organized. He knew it was for a funeral and did a major rush in 1 day for me. I REALLY appreciated his empathy and flexibility, since I could see many people saying "tough luck" if you asked for such a rush service. The family was thrilled to see all the photos in a slideshow at the funeral and grateful to have that history preserved. I am so happy with the outcome of my recent scan order!! The turnaround time was seriously only a matter of days! The price was very reasonable as well, much less than better-known competitors and without the 6 week wait. (I'm talking to you, Legacy Box, et al). I also had an old audiotape converted to MP3 which turned out great. I now have all of my kids' childhood photos NOT in a box in the basement collecting dust, but stored on my computer, where I might actually look at them periodically. I also had old photos scanned of my parents, grandparents and of me as a kid, for a different walk down memory lane...and scanning at 300dpi produced beautiful images! It was a pain to drive to the far north side, but well worth it. I asked for my photos and discs to be shipped to me, which arrived the next day via UPS. I have more photos that I will definitely entrust to The Digital Convert to scan. I'll probably ship them though to avoid the long drive. At least parking is easy if you do decide to drive. I needed a quick turnaround presentation of 89 years of photos of my father for his funeral, and Ezra came through. The DVD he created for me was beautiful, and very well received at the visitation and luncheon; Ezra was very accommodating and even stayed late for me to drop off and pick up within the short time frame I had to work with.... I plan to have Ezra scan all my family photos. I have my own scanner, but his services are quite reasonable and this long overdue project can once and for all be complete. The owner did a great job, in under 3 days, and created a nice title page as well. The prices are so low, I suggested he raise his prices. Was very satisfied. My project of old handwritten letters of various sizes and deteriorating paper took special handling. Ezra was up to the task and digitally converted them into an easily accessible file on a disk that I could upload onto my computer. Even the tiniest pages are easy to enlarge and read. What's more, there is now a way for family in other locations to read these fascinating tales of years past. I'm very happy with the results and highly recommend The Digital Convert. During a recent trip home to Alabama, I found multiple 3" 8mm reel tapes taken between 1958 to 1969 by my Grandparents. No one in my family could tell me what was on these tapes. I bit the bullet and decided to see what the Digital Convert could pull off of the tapes. I am so glad that I did. From a quality perspective, the video looks amazing (even on my 65" TV) and there are very few imperfections in the video thanks to their transfer process.
