I really enjoy this spot! My boyfriend and I aren't huge sandwich eaters but we definitely go here often now! I usually get the same Italian madness sandwich. Cannot recommend this place enough. My girlfriend and I had seen this place a handful of times when visiting the ramen place next door. We finally had a craving for a good sandwich and decided to give this place a shot. We are happy we did. The food here is amazing! The sandwiches are loaded for the money. They are a little pricier at $13 on average but it's worth it in my opinion. I got the New York Steamer the first time and my girlfriend got the spicy Italian. The second time I got the mad Italian and she got the spicy Italian again. It was worth the money and the trip back. The sandwiches here are so flavorful and full of toppings so it beats all the other guys. They also have really good chips as well. All the flavors we've tried so far have been delicious. The service here is always prompt and friendly. They have a couple of people working at all times so you should be in and out pretty quick. The ambiance is cool because of all the football stuff the owner has in the back wall. I love all the Redskins/Commanders memorabilia. It makes it feel like a homey spot. While the service is friendly and the store felt very welcoming inside, at the end of the day it all comes down to the food. The corned beef and pastrami sandwich that I ordered (The Salty Dog) had no flavor except just salt. It got to a point where as I was finishing a half of the sandwich, my tongue started to numb. I ended up getting rid of the second half of the expensive sandwich. If the sandwich was decent I might have been able to forgive the store's lack of sauerkraut but unfortunately that was missing as well. I'm all for a great sub/hero/grinder...whatever you want to call it and I'm also all for small businesses especially since covid times...but...I must go with 3 stars based on our steak and cheese order. I was pretty disappointed when the guy pulled some precooked steak and plopped it into the microwave for a few minutes. I almost wanted to change my mind but didn't follow thru. As you can imagine, a microwaved steak and cheese is no replacement for a freshly grilled one. Also ordered the New Yorker...and it was OK. You can get a similar one at Santinis down the street at a much lower cost. Each sub was $16+ so you are dropping close to $40 on 2 subs. You walk in, browse the menu and order at the counter, and it'll be made in seconds. The Food: I went with the Mad Italian, which came with Capicola, Mortadella, Pepperoni, Genoa and Provolone. All the meats and ingredients worked very well together and everything there was quality. They were very generous with the portions as well. I left very full and satisfied. The Service: The employees were nice. I came at a busy lunch time, but that gave me time to browse the menu and see all of their different selections. Once I ordered at the counter, they made my order fairly quickly and had me on my way. Overall, a smooth experience. I'll be back here again! As per our unspoken agreement, any time my boyfriend and I go for a long bike ride or hike, we order an Italian sub. It's the law. We biked many miles until our legs decided they needed a break. By that time we were in a town we've never been and were hungry. Did a quick Yelp search and saw this place and decided to come in and split the Mad Italian. It was very good, although not my favorite deli shop. I can say that it was almost too meaty/salty and didn't taste balance even though we asked for vinegar. I wouldn't mind coming back and trying another sandwich. I do agree with the other reviewers that the sandwiches are pretty expensive, which I get because of the current situation. I don't really understand the love that people have for this place. I have now tried it three times and this time I had the Mad Italian, which everyone I know recommends. I'm sorry but the food is just average and there really isn't anything special about it. I think the reason why is the bread, which tastes like mass produced sub rolls you get at the supermarket or Costco. The meats were fine, but when you pair that with mediocre bread it really just brings down the entire sandwich. I think the sub would have been much better if the bread was made in house or bought fresh from a bakery. Unfortunately, yet another disappointing NoVa deli on the list. The Deli. Such a simple name. No lights, no glitter, no self-promotion. And yet, that's all this place needs because the food speaks for itself. I have lived in Herndon for 13 years and this place still remains one of my favorite places to eat. I would consider The Deli the best Italian sandwich deli in the entire DC metropolitan area. Better than the Italian Store. Better than A Deli. I would even go as far as to say that The Deli in Herndon is comparable to some of the delis in NYC which it is likely modeled after. I work from home and so I go to The Deli for lunch often. Definitely at least once a month. Usually once every couple weeks. I change my order often to get a taste of different things but my favorite sandwiches are the Super Salty Dog, The Italian Stallion, the Mad Italian, the New Yorker, and the Super Deli. Sorry, but this deli does not cut the mustard. I got the Mad Italian which while it comes with a lot, did not provide me much comfort. The bread it comes on is way too soft, almost soaking in the olive oil. The meat tasted like it had it had been sitting out a bit, but by no means was it not fresh. Just not the kind I am used to. It comes with a side pickle but nothing else. That is a huge bummer. I got a bag of Route 11 potato chips but they are not enough to overturn this decision. Either way you slice it, if you want a good Italian, or just a good sandwich, make your way out to PrimoHoagies in Leesburg. The bread is better and the meats are fresher. Just started working in Herndon and heard about The Deli off Elden street. I got the Mad Italian and my coworker got the tuna. Both were so delicious!
