As someone who bakes cakes often, I'm very particular about where I spend money for desserts. The Cupcake Collection has been a favorite of ours for a number of years and we always make a stop to pick up some cupcakes during our visits to the Nashville area or as in this case, just to pick up our cakeorder. The bakery is located in a nicely renovated blue house in the ever changing Germantown area surrounded by attractive upscale-like apartments and condos. If you're lucky, you can find street parking close by. The sweet potato cupcake was the first one I ever tried and the one that actually got me hooked on this place. It is always moist and super flavorful, so obviously I was so excited that I would be getting a three layer sweet potato cake for my birthday. We also purchased two cupcakes when we picked up the cake... a wedding cake cupcake and of course the sweet potato cupcake. Both were moist and delicious! Unfortunately, the sweet potato birthday "cake", with the usual vibrant spices, was clearly over baked. This made for a nearly burnt taste below the layer of thick buttercream frosting and the texture of the cake was therefore not nearly as moist as one would have hoped. In fact, we found ourselves eating the inner part of the cake and leaving the overly dark hard outside crust and thick frosting on the plate. This was clearly a "quality control" issue. Regrettably, as some bakeries expand and produce more product, quality often slips and fails to meet the expectations of repeat customers. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with my birthday cake and didn't eat or share nearly as much of it as I had hoped. In fact, much of it was discarded. I'll be reluctant to return to this bakery during my next visit to Nashville. However, my only advice to others would be to stick to the cupcakes. Those are usually delicious. That way it's not as big of an investment. read more

Black owned bakery. Happy Black History Month! They have multiple vegan cupcake options. All vegan cupcakes are also gluten free. I wanted to try all the vegan flavors so I got one of each, which totaled half a dozen. They came frozen. I was told that when I'm ready to eat one I just need to sit it out for about an hour to thaw. This has worked out well each time. VEGAN VANILLA CUPCAKE It was ok. The cupcake was moist but dense and it had the typical gluten free consistency and beige color. The icing is pretty great. VEGAN CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE Good, just dense. VEGAN MARBLE CUPCAKE Good, but had those same remnants of that distinctive gluten free taste. VEGAN RED VELVET CUPCAKE Good. Slightly less dense than the chocolate cupcake for some reason. VEGAN SNICKERDOODLE Very good VEGAN SWEET POTATO CUPCAKE This one was perfect. So moist, fluffy, and sweet. You'd never guess this was gluten free. The young lady working that evening wasn't particularly friendly or pleasant. May have just been a bad day. More of a 3-star experience, but they got an extra star for having 6 vegan options. read more

I was in Nashville for the first time on vacation and read great things about The Cupcake Collection in Essence magazine. Without a doubt I made plans to stop by to try their treats while supporting a local black business. The location is a small but cute bakery within what seems like a house. I arrived about 2 hours before closing and upon walking in, I was greeted kindly. Unfortunately they were out of most the flavors I had wanted to try so, I settled for a red velvet and a wedding cake flavored cupcakes. I decided to indulge in my cupcakes on the porch. Firstly, both of the cupcakes were moist and flavorful. I mean, they were GOOOODDD! Probably one of the best I've ever had. Of the two, I loved the wedding cake cupcake which surprised me because it has almond buttercream and I was apprehensive as to what that would taste like. It was superb! The sweetness on both flavors was balanced very well. I had to stop myself from eating both of them in one sitting lol.
