My husband had a salmon bowl which looked incredible, but I didn't sample. One of the things we really liked about The Old Wellington was the high caliber of food quality. Being that we had just embarked on our UK trip, it was nice to have a meal that was healthy. I was really blown away by how great the food was and extra happy that I didn't have to settle for something overly rich that would've weighed me down for the days of walking ahead. While the atmosphere and the food were 5 stars all the way, I am deducting one star for the length of time it took to get the food. We scanned the QR code on our table to place our order (a relic from Covid times I suppose), and it took nearly 40 minutes for our food to arrive. We noticed other people going in and placing their orders, but this was confusing since our drink order arrived in a somewhat timely manner. We had timed tickets for an attraction nearby, so I had to leave part of my meal behind. Kind of a bummer since the food was so good and an hour should've been plenty of time to not feel rushed. Of worthy mention is the conveniently central location in Manchester. Literally less than 5 minutes walk to great shopping, Chetham's Library and Manchester Cathedral. In fact there's been a real Hare and Hounds here in Shudehill all this time and I'd never realised it. Probably because I didn't have much reason to go to Shudehill back then, but there we have it. Well shame on me, because this is one of the oldest pubs in Manchester. It's in the Northern Quarter, but think of it as something of an alternative to it, because while the majority of the NQ is dedicated to quirks and boho vibes and artsiness with just the right amount of scruff and a few airs and graces, pretension ends here. This is about as down to earth as you can get. You'll find old men by the door (the front door of which is adjacent to both pawn and porn shops and apparently what is one of Manchester's most famous and discreet brothels... mmm, local culture) smoking pipes and cigarettes, and if you can muster up the bravery to walk past them, it's worth it. This place is soaked in character in the same way the likes of the King's Arms in Salford is, with a legendary Karaoke night full of geriatrics crooning along to Frank Sinatra and cheap drinks aplenty. The food is as down to earth as the place - decent, honest and simple. With friendly staff and live music upstairs sometimes, this pub is about as central as you can get and definitely worthy of a few visits. Practise your gruff voice and start whinging about 'the youth of today' and you'll fit right in, squire.

One drizzly Sunday afternoon, I accompanied Vickie S to watch a couple of football matches in the New Oxford, shortly to be joined by one of our friends. Having been told there was no food at the King's Arms, I assured my mates that the New Oxford doesn't serve grub on Sundays at all. It says so on the website, in reviews, everything. As we arrived a sign greeted us informing us of which days food was served. Monday to Saturday. Cue much lip trembling from the very hungry football fanatics. Even when inside they still tried their luck and asked the bartender if there was any food at all. When met with a negative, as well as a round of drinks we bought a round of crisps. Every Seabrooks flavour you could think of. And then later, while our friend was enjoying a cigarette outside, the very sweet bartender who'd been lovely to us throughout the ridiculous crisp mountain exchange dropped a packet of mini Cheddars and a packet of pork scratchings on our table. 'Here you go, on me,' he said with a smile. We looked at each other. She, aware of my Yelping duties, turned to me and said, 'I think you're gonna have to add another star.' 'I think so too,' I responded. The pair of us gushed about just how nice that was. Free snacks and very kind service is something so rare in cities, and in that little corner of Salford, on the very outskirts of Manchester city centre, we were privileged to receive such wonderful things. New Oxford, well done. I'll be in to try the food very soon, which I'm sure will be fantastic. I also tried a new fruit beer. Passionfruit, on tap. Located in a part of the city that is clearly on the up (just off St Peters Square) it's a traditional boozer of the very old school variety - deceptively sized with a tiny front bar but loads of seating in the back! The drinks on offer are all a little bit stuck in the past for my beer tastes but this isn't a problem for most patrons - they just do lots of bitters, lagers and stouts. I have to say that their beer flights are great value at just over £3.00 where you can get a third of each beer of your choice up to a pint - really good idea and great to see it appearing in more and more pubs! The Eagle doesn't claim to be anything it's not - it's a drinkers, local pub. There's bound to be a couple of characters in there. The bar staff are always chatty with good knowledge of what's on tap. Myself and a friend opted for the Elbow ale (~£3.40 a pint), which was light and fairly tasty. It came in handled pint glass. There was a couple of tiny flies buzzing around, the seats weren't all that comfy and we worried that a glance at the wrong moment could have given us an eyeful of the urinals, but we had a good time all the same.

Many say that this pub would get a lot more custom if it wasn't on the 'wrong side' of Piccadilly Station as it were. However this does mean that it gets a nice eclectic clientele, including office suits at lunchtime which often suggests quality food (smart types are picky about their food, I've met plenty of them). The food itself is your hearty, tasty pub grub from upmarket peppery steak pies and gammon and eggs to sirloin steaks and corned beef hash. The chips are particularly nice. The beers include the Marston's standard Burton, Pedigree and specials like Long Hop, as well as many festival ales such as Everard's, Brains and Ringwood's. Down to earth, upbeat and friendly staff serve the pub's varied customers, creating a jovial and relaxed atmosphere. Certainly a worthy addition to the guide.
