Chop House Game Pâté
Michael B.

The second of the three Chop Houses I've eaten in. I can confidently say it became one of the best dining experiences I've had all year. Finding myself lumbered at the last minute with the arduous task of arranging my team's Christmas-time meal, I initially struggled with what type of cuisine to go for. So instead of the standard Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Italian and after sampling the menu at their brother restaurant Albert's (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/the-albert-square-chop-house-manchester) I decided to go for British and was relieved to get a table considering it was Christmas work party central in the city. After a couple of local pints we arrived in good time and were seated at a great table about halfway down the venue. I had no idea how narrow yet insanely long this place was - a 19th century Grade II listed building internally decorated with glossed tiles, ironwork and pictures of historical Manchester. It's a sight to behold. With the exception of Scallops & Black Pudding (I hate the latter with a passion), I would have ordered any of the starters on the seasonal menu. Ultimately deciding on the Chop House Game Pâté, it was a lovely choice and whet my appetite for what was to follow. The legendary Mr Thomas's Famous Home-made Corned Beef Hash. I have to copy and paste from the menu: "10 days in the making - to our own secret recipe - served with sautéed potatoes & creamed onions. Finished with a soft-poached egg & Cheshire-smoked dry-cure bacon." It was exquisite. All of it. I wanted to eat it again the next day, for every meal. I still want it now - tell me the secret recipe!! The service was exemplary as well, we were asked regularly if we wanted more drinks and considering the place quickly filled, we didn't have to wait too long for our meals. Washed down with pints of Dizzy Blonde, Unicorn and Best Bitter by Black Sheep, it's safe to say my team approved of my choice to come here. I've got a feeling they'll demand it for Christmas 2015 as well - it's certainly already got my vote.

I came here two years ago and thought it would be a great choice to take the in-laws so i prebooked knowing it would be packed for Xmas. The bar is tiny but opens up at the back to expose old Victorian green tiles. Sitting down they had reserved our table on the edge of the Xmas parties. We quickly ordered our drinks and trawled through the menu. It contained nice festive themed food with stuffed wild mushrooms, fish dishes, pies, steaks and veggies options. I had never tried stovie so I ordered that and a tikka salmon. The rest of the party had the ham and spilt pea soup, Xmas turkey dinner, spicy whitebait, Cornish beef hash, and haddock. I was so very impressed with the quick polite service of our waiter. He was a little flustered but professional. My stovie was presented well and tasted divine with the poached egg and the whitebait was plentiful. Everyone was happy with their food..I even tried the soup. Nom! Plates whisked away I did honestly think my salmon was on the small side for £16..but it was deceptive it was so thick! Once again everyone demolished their meals.. To finish we had a chessboard..the amount of cheese was scarce on it though..overall I love this place, the service , food and atmosphere is perfect especially in the cold winter months..I much prefer this to Sam's chop house.

Mr Thomas' Chop House!!! Saying it like that makes it sound awesome. But whenever I walk past here my nostrils are filled full of the smell of a hard working kitchen, the kind I use to work in before I came to uni, the food is to high standard and everything it rehearsed and runs like clockwork. The smallest or cosiest (you decide) restaurant in Manchester this places dates back to 1872 and is all about the industrial nostalgia. The Victorian feel takes you back to the times before you were born with a big variety of ales and lovely jubely home cooked style food. Try the corn beef hash and you'll be pleasantly surprised that something you may consider to be a tad vulgar to be sooooo gooooodddd. Additionally the fish and chips or ale and steak pie are all sound options. Watch out tho if your heading to this place on a evening chances are its going to be rammed. Book ahead to avoid disappointment.

I went to the Chop House today having read their good reviews on Yelp, and with me looking for a new Gluten Free resturant that would replace TEA4/2 as my go to place for breakfast in the city centre. Unfortunatly, my search goes on. I rang up this place to see if their Corned Beef Hash was Gluten Free, the man checked with the chef and told me it was, hence this is what I ordered. I was quite confused when I got to this bar, as the back enterance was closed, I thought the restaurant was shut hence I had to phone them back, the woman was talking in a way, like I was stupid, saying this is a resturant, when I accidentaly called it a shop and for not noticing the front enterance, which honestly is well hidden. The wait for my food was slightly longer than normal, however I wouldn't of minded this if my food is nice and fresh, I expected it to be made out of gold for its £13 price tag and taste great however it didn't even warrant a price tag of half of their charge. The corned beef was cooked seperate to the potato, and like the bacon was very chewy, the potatos were just bland and too soft. I didn't see many vegetables in my dish either. They call this a famous dish and it must be famous for being daylight robbery considering how it tasted and how much it cost. The only good thing about my meal was the small egg, and last time I checked an egg on its own that size, isn't worth £13, I bet you could get a good few dozens with that from the local supermarket. This is a very old building but some parts are more modern than others. Overall, the food here is terrible considering the price I paid, some of the staff here are nice, friendly and helpful and some certainly are not, that is why I feel even 1 star is generous for this establishment. I wish my 275th review on Yelp could of been a more positive one, but Dissapointment just sums up my visit her today. Thet even added a £3.23 service charge to the bill, which was compulsory and I wasn't told about until I saw the bill. The food and service would of warranted them paying me and not me giving them £3.23. It is bad enough their pricing but adding this on to the bill is disgraceful.

If you do one thing this year you must promise me you will try the corned beef hash here. You have not eaten corned beef hash until you eat Mr. Thomas's corned beef hash trust me. The food here is the tastiest traditional grub you will find in the whole of Manchester. This place was one of my best finds this year and I know I will be returning over and over and over again. Next on the list to try is there Cottage Pie yum yum yum. You will be pleasantly surprised by the value for money here but make sure you ask tip the staff in cash and not through the service charge as they only get a small % of it.

It was sunny, and we understand how short British summers could be so we decided we decided to fill up our belly's and our vitamin D quota simultaneously. The beer garden (not really a garden, but its outside) is pretty lovely, partially in the shade of a church, with boulders sponsored cushions and blankets in bright colours scattered on the seats. We were seated prompts, and when for the lunch time deal to save some pennies, but the standard menu is pretty extensive. I fancied a burger, and Jess, the bangers and mash, they came out fairly quickly, just long enough for my friend to demonstrate an awkward situation with an empty glass and a straw, and they were good. The gravy with the sausages was great, and I had really fat, yummy chips with my burger. Now, I have no recollection at all about what I had for my pud, so it can't have been standout, but I remember enjoying whatever is was. I'd eat here again for homely food, probably quite a good place for the in laws and similar folks.

The sister pub to Sam's Chophouse, Mr Thomas's continues the family tradition of bringing charm, sophistication and quality to the Manchester masses. The atmosphere perhaps isn't quite as cosy as Sam's, but the decor is still full of old-fashioned character and the staff do their best to provide a great service and quality. One of their signature dishes is the Corned Beed Hash Salad - sounds strange but heartily recommended by not just me, but several of my friends too. Beautifully presented and still very light if you don't want to overload yourself. There are of course a great selection of traditional mains like Cottage Pie and Scampi and Chips as well as modern British favourites like Vindaloo. We also had a great bottle of wine from the extensive menu. Check out the black and white pictures page on their website - I almost believed these were a century old!

I still don't know the difference between chop houses! A Mancunian mystery...
Tim O.

Hey guys before reading any further I haven't eaten here so I'm only discussing the bar! For a start as a self respecting Mancunian I'm ashamed to admit I still couldn't tell you which one is Tom's and which is Sam's (I'm pretending that thing on Albert Square doesn't exist... ghastly). All I know is I like the 'Chops'.... They're a staple of my drinking and have been for years. They are cosy and fill that cheeky pint after work void. They have a good selection of ale and change it up too. It's a tad expensive and can become filled with types I usually choose to avoid. It loses a star for me for those reasons. I just like it. I don't love it. Maybe the food would get it an extra star. It's a good solid pub/bar.....a PAR or a BUP perhaps? Anyway.....go.. It's nice.

This place is great... awesome value traditional British food...I've just had turkey dinner (I know that's American ) with all the trimmings for £13.00 ... was top quality too. Amazing decor, good beers and friendly staff. ..one f my favourites in manchester for lunchtime. Enjoy

The food itself was delicious. I had a carrot soup. It was fresh and not overly salty. The sourdough bread and butter was the perfect complement and I enjoyed my meal immensely. My husband had a salmon bowl which looked incredible, but I didn't sample. One of the things we really liked about The Old Wellington was the high caliber of food quality. Being that we had just embarked on our UK trip, it was nice to have a meal that was healthy. I was really blown away by how great the food was and extra happy that I didn't have to settle for something overly rich that would've weighed me down for the days of walking ahead. While the atmosphere and the food were 5 stars all the way, I am deducting one star for the length of time it took to get the food. We scanned the QR code on our table to place our order (a relic from Covid times I suppose), and it took nearly 40 minutes for our food to arrive. We noticed other people going in and placing their orders, but this was confusing since our drink order arrived in a somewhat timely manner. We had timed tickets for an attraction nearby, so I had to leave part of my meal behind. Kind of a bummer since the food was so good and an hour should've been plenty of time to not feel rushed. Of worthy mention is the conveniently central location in Manchester. Literally less than 5 minutes walk to great shopping, Chetham's Library and Manchester Cathedral. We loved our time in Manchester, and someday we'll be back to try more from the Old Wellington. Next time, we'll place our order inside :-)

Most people would see this pub when heading into town from Rochdale Road direction, as the side of the pub is often rented out to make advertising morals for various companies, which are pretty cool. It isn't the trendiest of pubs in town, with the client base seeming to be much older than other bars nearby in the Northern Quarter, and it did seem to be a little dead/quiet compared to others nearby, but there still seems to be a charm about this place. In fact there's been a real Hare and Hounds here in Shudehill all this time and I'd never realised it. Probably because I didn't have much reason to go to Shudehill back then, but there we have it. Well shame on me, because this is one of the oldest pubs in Manchester. It's in the Northern Quarter, but think of it as something of an alternative to it, because while the majority of the NQ is dedicated to quirks and boho vibes and artsiness with just the right amount of scruff and a few airs and graces, pretension ends here. This is about as down to earth as you can get. You'll find old men by the door (the front door of which is adjacent to both pawn and porn shops and apparently what is one of Manchester's most famous and discreet brothels... mmm, local culture) smoking pipes and cigarettes, and if you can muster up the bravery to walk past them, it's worth it. This place is soaked in character in the same way the likes of the King's Arms in Salford is, with a legendary Karaoke night full of geriatrics crooning along to Frank Sinatra and cheap drinks aplenty. The food is as down to earth as the place - decent, honest and simple. With friendly staff and live music upstairs sometimes, this pub is about as central as you can get and definitely worthy of a few visits. Practise your gruff voice and start whinging about 'the youth of today' and you'll fit right in, squire.

One drizzly Sunday afternoon, I accompanied Vickie S to watch a couple of football matches in the New Oxford, shortly to be joined by one of our friends. Having been told there was no food at the King's Arms, I assured my mates that the New Oxford doesn't serve grub on Sundays at all. It says so on the website, in reviews, everything. As we arrived a sign greeted us informing us of which days food was served. Monday to Saturday. Cue much lip trembling from the very hungry football fanatics. Even when inside they still tried their luck and asked the bartender if there was any food at all. When met with a negative, as well as a round of drinks we bought a round of crisps. Every Seabrooks flavour you could think of. And then later, while our friend was enjoying a cigarette outside, the very sweet bartender who'd been lovely to us throughout the ridiculous crisp mountain exchange dropped a packet of mini Cheddars and a packet of pork scratchings on our table. 'Here you go, on me,' he said with a smile. We looked at each other. She, aware of my Yelping duties, turned to me and said, 'I think you're gonna have to add another star.' 'I think so too,' I responded. The pair of us gushed about just how nice that was. Free snacks and very kind service is something so rare in cities, and in that little corner of Salford, on the very outskirts of Manchester city centre, we were privileged to receive such wonderful things. New Oxford, well done. I'll be in to try the food very soon, which I'm sure will be fantastic. I also tried a new fruit beer. Passionfruit, on tap.
