Served with sauteed veggies as well as some blanched. The meats were sliced thin and smothered in a tasty gravy. And of course deeply fried potatoes tied it all together. The band was so loud that I had trouble ordering but it was worth the sign language to get to where I wanted to go! I was a bit shocked when the bartender said they didn't serve English beers but then served me their house IPA that hit the spot (I'm sure it was brewed in England). When we brought this up to the server, I believe she said that they only make cocktails that are listed in their drink menu. A basic martini is not on the menu, but a cosmo is. The server asked if I would like to swap that drink out for something else on their menu, which I did. The food was very good and perfectly portioned. They have a kids menu, making this a good place for families. My husband ordered the french fries, peppercorn sauce, and scallops; I ordered the Mozzarella, peach, prosciutto ham salad; and my daughter had the kids mac n cheese. Due to its close proximity to business district Spinningfields, 6pm on Fridays usually sees it get crammed full of office workers up for a laugh over a few relaxing pints and as such is generally a good natured and inviting place be. Its al fresco drinking area is a really fantastic sun trap during the warmer months and the cosy and traditional pub decor inside means the Grapes is just as enjoyable a place to be as the dark evenings draw in.

The wait was a bit too long - but again, this is a pub, not a breakfast place, so not sure it's fair to expect fast service at this time of day.

They have a beers garden, and in the afternoon there are a lot of people around smoking and chatting. It's a Joseph Holt pub, so of course, some Manchester Ales can be found, like Maple Moon for instance. Very good beer, I recommend it. All in all, the staff was really friendly. An absolute must for real ale lovers, there is no brewery attached. Instead, they have up to eight pumps (a minimum of four) of both real ales and more mainstream beers like Fosters. Both these and drinks that I myself actually drink are very reasonably priced for a pub just on the outskirts of the Northern Quarter. If you're not familiar with the area just walk all the way down Oldham Street then cross over the main road- its right in front of you. It is very quiet during the day but that is what some people want after all. No, where the Crown and Kettle really could do with improvement is the food. I think it really lets itself down as it just isn't good pub food- maybe if they perked up the menu more people would straggle in during the day. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they don't want trade to be roaring at all hours - just a thought.
