Large old English pub with really good food and great service. Came on a Saturday for lunch. The Beer was well needed and enjoyed. It was sausage week so as advised we had the Cumberland sausage which was hearty and full of flavour. Chips were delicious and the Pate was also very tasty. Fabulous lunch in a great pub.

If, like me, you're a city dweller but sometimes crave the quiet of the countryside without wanting to stray too far from home, Manchester's Castlefield area provides the perfect location for a spot of lunch and a few drinks in almost tranquil surroundings (this may not be the case on Friday nights, mind). With its winding canals, abundance of colourful barges and geese bumbling along the waterways, Castlefield is one corner of the city you can count on for an almost-in-the-sticks experience. The Wharf has done a brilliant job in recreating that country pub look and feel. Whether you sit outside in the large beer garden with its pretty water fountain, overlooking the canal or inside, among the rustic decor and beneath the high barn-like roof beams, you'll feel like you're a million miles from Deansgate, despite it being a just five minute walk away. The food menu is excellent, offering everything from traditional roasts to sharing platters and burgers straight from the BBQ. We opted for the Seafood Platter, £25, which sounds pricey but was well worth it for the sheer variety (baby octopus, fried squid, salmon, prawns in marie rose, mackerel, smoked salmon...etc etc). Drinks-wise, we paid around £9 for two ciders (pint and bottle), which is about right these days. There are a good selection of ciders - they stock the obvious ones; Magners, Bulmers etc but also offer a few lesser known ones. We tried 'Fiery Fox', a golden, medium apple cider which was different to anything else we'd had before but definitely not unpleasant. So, would I go to The Wharf again? Well, the staff are friendly, service is good, the location picturesque, the food is excellent and the pub itself is unlike anywhere else I've come across in Manchester city centre (so far), so it's a big fat YES from me.

One of my fav places to go for Sunday lunch and for a drink in the winter. Went here with a friend for a few catch up drinks on Saturday night. It suited us perfectly as i had a sore throat from hell so shouting wasn't an option and she had stuff to update me on so we grabbed a couple of big chairs and settled in for the eve. Bar is quite big and there is a variety of seating on multiple levels. There is also an upstairs area which has larger tables. They have a car park at the rear f the building and a large outside terrace that gets very busy in the warmer weather. They serve food until 10pm Monday - Saturday ( 9.30pm on Sunday) but we just opted for some of their tasty crisps i went for the chorizo flavour. I have eaten here before and can recommend their Sunday roast which comes with a selection of mashed veg, veg and the usual trimmings good Yorkshire pud too! Staff are friendly and efficient, apologising for a brief wait which wasn't really a problem. They have a real fire ( which was dieing down when we arrived but you could still smell the coal in the air!) so it's a great place to curl up with a book and a glass of red on an Autumn day which i will be doing soon as the nights are drawing in now.

They call this a steak burger. But it's basically just a normal burger. Is "ok". Bit dry and salty.

Nice place to be when it's sunny with plenty of seating outside although if its a lovely warm sunny day, you may struggle to find a seat/table. When you are sat outside, you get a nice view of the canal and surrounding area. As for the food, I went for the burger. It was a bit dry and salty which was a shame. I wouldn't have it again. If you have a dog, they have a no problem with dogs being in the pub/bar. Not sure if they would be allowed in the restaurant bit though.

Staggering around this area after a few drinks, we were really hungry (never go drinking on an empty stomach!). This place appeared out of nowhere and looked like somewhere that would do standard pub grub, but it turned out to be way better than that. The setting was really cool and you very quickly get used to the fact there are dogs all over the place - you can bring your dog along to the pub, perfect for a mid-walk lunch? On a recommendation from a friend I ordered a steak, which turned up with a stack of chunky chips, salad, mushrooms and cooked tomatoes. It didn't look much but it turned out to be delicious, tender and very filling. The staff were friendly, and they made us feel very welcome even though we turned up 10 minutes before the kitchen closed. Overall, highly recommended - posh pub atmosphere, great food and you can bring a pet too!

The menu was pretty standard, so I quickly have chosen what to have and went to take a seat. The breakfast was of the right temperature, no twists, does the job. If want a quick fix ( depending on how many people are already there) while waiting for your train or stuff at Mosi, than that's the place; otherwise might want to check out things nearby. The wait was a bit too long - but again, this is a pub, not a breakfast place, so not sure it's fair to expect fast service at this time of day.

Although it's traditional and there's nothing that makes you go wow like some nearby trendy bars, it's definitely this which appeals to me - in fact I found a lovely little table towards the back with a roaring fire which warmed me up on a day when the weather was starting to look rather autumnal. I was served by 3 different staff and all were friendly, polite and welcoming. For some bizarre reason I decided to go for their 2 for £12.95 lunch deal (why I needed 2 courses at lunch I'm not sure but it seemed good value - plus I'd been in meetings all day so needed a fair amount of comfort food) and I went for the ham hock terrine to start with (lovely piccalilli) followed by the steak and ale pie with chips and vege's (devine). The quality and taste was excellent and with a very full belly I felt my work here was done! Speaking of work, it was also a good little spot to work for an hour on my laptop afterwards - with free wifi. That's the right way to blend tradition and modern so as the customer has the best of both worlds :-)

Located in a part of the city that is clearly on the up (just off St Peters Square) it's a traditional boozer of the very old school variety - deceptively sized with a tiny front bar but loads of seating in the back! The drinks on offer are all a little bit stuck in the past for my beer tastes but this isn't a problem for most patrons - they just do lots of bitters, lagers and stouts. I have to say that their beer flights are great value at just over £3.00 where you can get a third of each beer of your choice up to a pint - really good idea and great to see it appearing in more and more pubs! City Arms is somewhere that's cool to pop into if you're after a quick pint or meeting with friends, I just can't see myself wanting to spend all night here - I think I'd get very bored, very quickly of the beers on offer - but this is my own overly pretentious beery opinion!
