    What an ass!

Love this place! Imagine a cosy country pub with a roaring fire, slap-bang in the middle of Manchester. Not been in here for a couple of years, so I was keen to check out the pubs on Liverpool Road, Castlefield once again, prior to a curry (there's three curry houses alone on this strip), so after starting off in The White Lion next door, we stopped for one in here. Bit disappointed about the seating plan, to be honest. Seems like they just want to cater for diners, with at least three quarters of the pub now taken up with tables set aside for meal-eaters, to the extent that there are rope barriers everywhere! So us three boozers had to scrap around for any stools we could find and ended up sharing a table with some randoms (not that I mind at all). Totally forgot you can stay here too (it's a reasonally-priced hotel) and I really must come back for one of their epic Sunday lunches, in the next few weeks.

Cosy, inviting pub in the centre of Manchester close to Hilton, curry places (akbars, Bollywood etc) and party strip Deansgate locks! Very busy when we went after work on a Thursday and seem to cater for diners rather than drinkers though so had to scrap around for chairs BUT great wine and not too pricey! Heard great things about the food so will be coming back for a hearty roast or midweek treat!

Awesome bar that has affable barkeeps and cask ales. Don't get me started with the pub decor...dope. It's right down the street from the White Lion. There are multiple dining areas to get your meat pies on. yum yum gimme some.

One of my friends has been hankering for a 'proper' Sunday lunch for a while now and, after racking my brain for where I would consider the best (I'm not a massive fan of eating them out as my mum's is just so amazing!) I reckoned our best bet was with The Ox. It was fairly empty being a warm day, so we sat down in the bar area with a bottle of wine and looked over the menu. Alongside the main roasts - lamb, pork, beef, chicken - you could get some of their more classic pub meals, such as fish and chips. There was also a nice selection of starters and desserts for those wanting to take part in the 'two or three for £___' offer. I started with the bourbon soaked pork belly chunks, served with a horseradish mash and red cabbage, which was really tasty. The crunch from the cabbage worked really well with the tender pork, and the mash had a nice little kick to it. For main, I had the roast beef, which was served as close to the perfect home-cooked colour I have come to expect. The yorkshire puddings here are by far the main event, as big as your head and a great balance between fluffy and crispy. You get both roast potato and mash - which I never really understand, but hey - and a side of veg, which was served in a sharing tray for us to pick from; carrots, parsnips, courgette and (my favourite) cauliflower and broccoli cheese. Oh and a gravy boat, for those who want a little bit more moisture on their plate! Needless to say, neither of us could finish this impressive meal and needed a bit of a walk afterwards. The offers on food here are just great for the quality you get, and I have no hesitations in recommending this to everyone.

The Short tale of the Ox Oh the Ox, the master of the double bluff. I turn up outside with my special lady friend telling her I've read all about this amazing gastro pub- we are smiling, hurray! We go in and it looks like a bar where you could easily get your socks robbed- we are sad, booo! Then we are served our meal and everything is gastro- we're happy again, hurray!!! The End.

We heard that this place offered two courses for £10 and had some of the best food in town. Whoever told us this was not wrong. When you walk into the Ox you could be forgiven for thinking that it was just another pub that offered good ale in Manchester. However this place offers gastro dining at its best. I had chicken pate to start followed by steak and ale pie on a bed of mash with black pudding. The portions were perfect and the flavours were really delicious. The wine that was recommended was perfect for the courses ordered and the staff were great. The only negative I have to say The Ox was that when we returned a second time the staff were quite slow and the service was poor in comparison to our first trip. Forgiving the staff for what I perceive may have been an off day perhaps The Ox is a great place to take your loved ones for a cheap and impressive meal. Thumbs up to the Ox.

We dined on the second floor for lunch on a Sat. We did not have reservations-but they are recommended. My friend dined on a lively chicken bacon avo salad. I had the chicken bacon cheese sandwich. The food itself was delicious. I had a carrot soup. It was fresh and not overly salty. The sourdough bread and butter was the perfect complement and I enjoyed my meal immensely. My husband had a salmon bowl which looked incredible, but I didn't sample. One of the things we really liked about The Old Wellington was the high caliber of food quality. Being that we had just embarked on our UK trip, it was nice to have a meal that was healthy. I was really blown away by how great the food was and extra happy that I didn't have to settle for something overly rich that would've weighed me down for the days of walking ahead. While the atmosphere and the food were 5 stars all the way, I am deducting one star for the length of time it took to get the food. We scanned the QR code on our table to place our order (a relic from Covid times I suppose), and it took nearly 40 minutes for our food to arrive. We noticed other people going in and placing their orders, but this was confusing since our drink order arrived in a somewhat timely manner. We had timed tickets for an attraction nearby, so I had to leave part of my meal behind. Kind of a bummer since the food was so good and an hour should've been plenty of time to not feel rushed. Of worthy mention is the conveniently central location in Manchester. Literally less than 5 minutes walk to great shopping, Chetham's Library and Manchester Cathedral. We loved our time in Manchester, and someday we'll be back to try more from the Old Wellington. Next time, we'll place our order inside :-)

However, I haven't visited this place for years, and was looking forward to going on a Saturday for a mates birthdays. There were 16 of us on a Saturday afternoon, starting here for food and drink before heading to a few other places in Didsbury. It's actually a really nice place - the interior is lovely and location spot on. It often gets scrutinised for being a bit pretentious with the crowd it attracts, but I have to say I prefer the crowd of didsbury locals - this place is always filled with a nice crowd and attracts no trouble. You can sit outside under the heated area, inside at the main bar, or in the restaurant/dining bit. Each area is always busy, with a bustling atmosphere and traditional decor. I ordered the Butternut Squash Risotto for my dinner which was the wrong choice - I should have gone for the burgers which a lot of my friends went for, and they looked amazing. The burgers came with a nice looking ciabatta bun, and were fully stacked with meat, salad and cheese. My risotto was very standard., The butternut squash was a little bit hard, and I didn't really feel full or satisfied after it. At least I had buckets of sweet potato fries to pick at from everyone elses order afterwards, which were home cooked and delicious! Quite a pricey place to come for lunch and a drink if you expect it to be a typical 'pub/bar' type place. But it is west didsbury after all. I'll be back to give the menu a second chance with a competely different order!

After Hyde's doing the Abel Heywood in town, it's cool to see Holt's doing something similar and really moving with the times in offering a relaxed (if somewhat still faux independent looking boozer) and multi-faceted 3rd place. I had a meeting here and decided to stay on for lunch so I can comment that the coffee (9 different blends - I only had one mind you...) was pretty good, the black and blue burger was tasty (lovely chips and sides - although the pit beans were a bit off in the spicing - a bit too much star anise I think...) and it was a good place to meet and also get some work done with loads of room to move around in and fairly quiet on a Thurs lunch. Although I wasn't partaking on this visit, the beer selection on draft was a good mix of Holt's and local breweries - plus regular lagers. What I was impressed with though was the large selection of bottles from Sierra Nevada (3 types), Founders All Day IPA and other great breweries. Ok so this place is very towny and I imagine could be a haven for the 'shirt and shoes brigade' on a weekend evening but overall it had enough to make me want to keep coming back. Nice work! ps amazing cake selection - check out my pic!

Gone is any mention of Holt's on signage and the whole look is trying to convince you it's an independent free hold. Even the Holt's branded pump clips are absent at the bar replaced with little chalk written clips. Overall this re 'un-branding' works and the pub was very busy though big enough to be full of people but still not rammed. Small touches linked the place to it's location right next to a train line, with signage alluding to a train station and concrete rail sleepers used as fencing in the beer garden. The beer was Holt's fairly unremarkable standard, though still far superior to most pubs normal selection of lagers, they had one guest beer on which was a pleasant pale but not amazing enough to have held it's name in my memory. The big selling point of this new refurbishment is the restaurant. You can tell a lot of money and thought had been placed into the new gastro focus. The place has been re done pretty much like most places you'll find in the Northern Quarter with lots of wood panelling and mis-matched chairs and edison style light bulbs. The dessert bar was the most impressive I've seen in any restaurant for a long time. A full ice cream bar on display as well as their huge selection of 5 inch deep cheesecakes. The menu was extremely varied but had a focus on the new trend in American style street food dining with pulled pork and hot dogs amid a selection of more standard choices like pizza or fish and chips. Everyone's food looked amazing and there was a general consenus that nothing served was sub par. My pulled pork hash was great, served with a mustard apple sauce and poached egg were spot on choices and a side of dirty beans which seemed to come with everything which they were calling P5 Pit Beans. Overall it's a local gastro pub done very well by a local chain which has been very underwhelming in recent years. But they are clearly trying to overhaul their image in selected locations around the city. I can only hope this happens in more of their locations and it was a very welcome change.
